Flapper I could one of those people you are referring to! I started out in the same mind as you, I was even keeping an eye on 2nd hand items on eBay. Those clothes bundles are pretty good value! I will be doing getting these for the growing baby.

My purchases have been a mix of new and expensive - cotbed and travel system which PIL are paying for. DH and I were planning to buy a cheaper one but PIL decided to gift us the same amount SIL got for dnephew so we decided to get one that DH really really wanted instead.

Lots of new and cheap - almost all the few clothes that we have got have come from Tesco/Asda/next clearance. The rest we shall buy when baby is here and that could be bundles of clothes from eBay. Chest of drawers and shelving unit from ikea. No need for wardrobe, we already have built in. A few nappies in different brands and sizes 1,2 and 3 during their bogof events. We can't stock pile these though as we don't know what will work till baby is here.

2nd hand - sleeping bags( we have since found out the PIL were a little worried as they have also bought us , lots of muslin, hand me down toys, baby bath, bouncer. Snuzpod and cocoonbaby 2nd hand on eBay.

Actually, it would have been nice to have relatives and friends to get hand me downs. Despite being over 30yrs old, I am the first of my friends to be expecting. SIL got lots of hand me downs from her friends from work but they are planning have another dc so she can't pass on too many items.

Bawbles · 11/03/2017 15:39

I think how much you spend is a personal thing. I spent a fortune on my DD buying high quality towels, bedding, travel system etc, I didn't have loads of cash but bought the best I could afford.

This time around I'm less inclined to buy expensive things but really pleased I still have all the lovely baby things from last time. I'm much comfier financially so it wouldn't be such a stretch if I wanted to splurge but it's not important to me this time around.

My sister and DBIL are having their first and have spent many thousands on nursery furniture, designer clothing, travel system etc. They both have good salaries but equally have some debts but they view buying 'good' stuff for baby as priority.

I baulk at paying £30 for a baby outfit but then I did have a champion pooer so remember vividly how many baby grows we would get through in a day.

rhodes2015 · 11/03/2017 16:04

I'm sorry you feel that way flappergirl.
Like me, there's ladies on here waiting for their next pay day to buy the next item.... car seat, cot etc, by no means unessasary items but I don't know anyone whos had a baby in the last few years to have hand me downs so I've had all new, not the most expensive stuff by any means but I've had what I want within what I think is a reasonable amount to spend given mine and dh earnings (which is not loads, I work in an office and he's a self employed plasterer)
We are going to get a really mixed bag of ladies on this thread, with all different earnings/lifestyles/circumstances etc. I think no different of anyone having hand me downs/second hand everything, than I do to someone going all out and having top of the range everything, surely we are all just doing the very best we can with what we have and that's all that matters.

rhodes2015 · 11/03/2017 16:30

cat
Congrats on your 20 week scan! I have anterior placenta too, was disappointed when I found out it was anterior when I was 17wks as read you don't feel as much but have felt lots of movement since.

not how is your nursery coming along? We got our carpets done this morning and put cotbed up but everywhere still looks a bit of a shit tip! I'm just sitting in there now having a cup of tea and a pack of biscuits contemplating building another flat pack or call it a day!

DrewOB0 · 11/03/2017 16:47

We flogged a lot of stuff on eBay to pay towards pram, planning to put some more on (clothes etc). I got clothes in sales at M&S and rest is supermarket.

Spindelina · 11/03/2017 17:03

I have to go back to work when we run out of money, so the less we spend, the more time I get off! Hoping for 6.5 months at the moment.

Total spend on this baby to date: £20 on a sling (but this is DC2 so I have loads of basic vests etc from DD... hoping we won't need to buy any presentable clothes until after I start getting paid again!)

glitterglitters · 11/03/2017 17:09

@Spindelina bless you! It's crazy that the UK has one of the better systems for maternity as well. I'm still super jealous of the sling bargain! 😁

glitterglitters · 11/03/2017 17:11

Because we've found it we're having a second girl I've been spoiling my eldest a bit with new clothes because I know I'll get double the wear out of them now. I went into next though and had a fawn over the adorable clothes. All I could think was how much baby sick the cute rainbow cardigan could withstand 😂👌🏼

Spindelina · 11/03/2017 17:23

Haha! My DD is really into pink and sparkly. That's OK to hand down to a brother, right?!

glitterglitters · 11/03/2017 17:30

@Spindelina 😂 I bet he could rock it. This is 2017 after all!

I buy quite tomboyish clothes if I'm honest. My dd's nanny buys her these taffeta pink monstrosities that get hidden in wardrobes for no other reason than they are a bitch to clean. 🙈 #baddaughterinlaw

Flappergirl86 · 11/03/2017 18:20

It's reassuring to know other people have had to do some bargain hunting as well! My maternity package is also really basic (minimum legal requirements) and I'm already on a pretty low income so having to save on everything! Though I'd be lying if I said I hadn't gone in to mamas & papas and stroked a £45 newborn dress before having a serious word with myself!

Fortunately my partner does alright, significantly better than my carer's wage anyway so it's not like baby will be wearing carrier bags for nappies and sleeping in a cardboard box. I really feel for single mums having to do it alone!

I'm sure I'll be less panicked about my ability to be both good and skint mother when my hormones aren't raging. I've nearly cried at dropping an egg on the kitchen floor and at the closing scene of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves today. If I catch any of Crufts later I'll be finished.

glitterglitters · 11/03/2017 18:46

@Flappergirl86 don't worry. You'll spend so much time accidentally comparing yourself to other parents etc before you can catch yourself. Just remember everybody is in the same boat though and we're all just winging it by the seat of our pants trying our best whatever our circumstances. 😊

wildone81 · 11/03/2017 19:13

Just been passed on a load of newborn and up to one month vests and sleep suits, and have them in the wash ready to be dried and bagged up into wee sets (vest, bodysuit and hat where there is one) in zip lock bags, so they can be labelled ready to fling in the hospital bag 😀😀

Thiing it'll be so much easier for husband to find stuff in the bag if outfits are all bagged up, and it's satisfying my need to plan!

Has saved us a fortune, we're very lucky!

Lallypopstick · 11/03/2017 19:56

I've definitely spent a fortune on things but we had nothing, as any family members with babies are still quite little, or things have been handed on to others already. We were lucky in that we had a generous gift from OH's mum which meant we could buy some lovely stuff, though we do have savings as well, and it's not like I'm spending any money on alcohol and other fun things! I'm hoping that I'll have two kids in total, so everything will hand down to the next one.

We've not bought any clothes beyond a pack of neutral babygros. I think we'll get some of those handed down depending on what we have.

Flappergirl86 · 11/03/2017 20:07

glitters thank you! Winging it is definitely the phrase.

wildone zip lock bag idea is genius. I'm gonna follow suit on that one.

lallypop we want two as well if we can. I'm not getting shut of any baby stuff until I've had a second or hit my 70s and have to admit that that boat has sailed!

Xxx

LuciBee231015 · 11/03/2017 20:18

I've got a mixed bag... got a hand me down baby bath, bouncer and gym from my friend. Got my nursery furniture from eBay second hand but bought a new mattress for the cotbed. My dad bought us our travel system, but that was reasonable at £450 for the lot including the isofix base.

I buy a pack of nappies every time I do a big food shop so I don't have to buy loads all at once.

The rest of the stuff I have bought is from asda, some from Mothercare, I buy a couple of bits every time I get paid...

Notyetthere · 11/03/2017 21:05

Will I plan to do the same thing. Ziplock bag with the sizes marked on top.

Rhodes the nursery went well. First thing this morning was shortening the blinds by taking some slats out. Never done it before but the wonders of YouTube. Cotbed is up. Chest of drawers is also up and I have even started to put baby's bits in it. DH had a chair that he normally just chucked his clothes on. It has now been moved to the nursery. It is starting to look great. Now we just need the finishing touches. I will post some pictures later when I have actually taken some photos. DH and I are now collapsed on the sofa after all the flat packs.

OP posts:
CatRash · 11/03/2017 21:31

Thank you Rhodes! Tbh I was quite surprised about the placenta as been feeling movements since around 16 weeks!

I'm just planning on doing a bit of everything spending wise. Some stuff brand new, some stuff second hand - eBay, car boots etc. Unfortunately we don't expect any hand me downs due to not knowing anyone with kids really - a lot of our friends are single or just starting families like us.

I'm going to try and make some stuff too - like reusable wipes. My second hand, eBay purchased overlocker might suddenly come into use after many years of living in a cupboard Grin

wildone81 · 11/03/2017 22:36

I've had the sewing machine out too...wanted some bundlers to try and avoid middle of the night popper trauma but wasn't prepared to pay £10 for 2 so made some.. pack of three vests for £2.50 and £3 for an xxxl men's tshirt made 3, and for a bit of an experiment I'm quite pleased with them 😀

Due July 2017 #4 …… Well into 2nd Trimester! 20 Week Scans and Bumps Galore
bluebird1235 · 11/03/2017 23:43

Nice one wildone! I'm going a bit crazy with making stuff. Knitting/sewing/crochet... I'm turning into a mad old granny a bit soon!!!

We've been really lucky with hand me down stufff. Lots of DHs siblings have had kids before us and are either offloading it all on us or lending it to us til they need again. I even got most of my maternity clothes from SIL as even though they hope to have another DC they aren't using the stuff at the moment so we may as well share. All rather fortunate as I'm not great at spending money!! The only extravagance I have planned for myself is the buggy as I want to make sure that we can still get out and about and newborn-suitable twin prams are disappointingly expensive (all the cheap ones are too wide to go through a door...)

I also spent about £25 at a nearly new sale and got a huge amount of stuff. Nothing I bought cost more than about £4 but is all lovely and barely worn/used. Really satisfied my bargain loving side!

I don't plan to have a nursery. They'll be in our room for 6 months at least anyway and we may well move around this time next year so I didn't really see the point! (Though I do love all your nursery pics!!)

CatRash · 12/03/2017 07:06

Wildone wow - absolutely love it! Great idea!! I think I might have to try making some too.

What have you been making bluebird? Clothes, blankets?

I like seeing / hearing about everyone's projects! Other than making some reusable wipes the only other thing i have planned is repurposing the bookshelf in the nursery into clothes, toy and baby book storage as it's DH's and he won't let me get rid of it!

I've bought some fabric, lidded boxes and I'm planning on doing some hand embroidery of woodland animals on each one.

I'm tackling the my sewing storage today to see exactly what I've got and what I'll need. I accidentally bought 150 skeins of embroidery thread a couple of days ago Blush

Seahawk80 · 12/03/2017 08:18

Hi all!

Flapper sorry that you feel like that, I really don't think it matters if things are second hand. We've had loads of hand me downs from friends and family including cot and car seat. My sister lent me all her maternity clothes which was brilliant. We will get a new buggy as everyone we know is still using theirs or will want it again and as we've saved so much elsewhere we decided it was worth it. I've bought a few frivolous bits now but when I'm on mat leave I'll just get the legal minimum and there won't be much spare cash.

I'm lucky that DH and I both earn a decent amount but you never know how things are for people behind closed doors. My sisters are massively better off than me, it's hard sometimes and I used to worry that our child will have less and that our house will be smaller and that I can't afford to be a sahm like them, but now I realise that it doesn't matter and there will always be people with more than you and people with less. It doesn't make you a bad mum in any way. Having a child that feels safe and loved is all
that matters.

I'm very envious of all the crafting - I'm so uncreative, sticking some wall stickers above the cot will be the most I can manage!

natienka · 12/03/2017 08:19

flapper please don't worry. I'm addicted to second hand more out of loving a good bargain. It's crazy how cheap you can get high quality stuff - I keep going on about my uppababy for £75 instead of £750 for the system, but I also got a Stokke cot bed for a hundred (again fraction of cost), babybjorn carrier for £2, isofix third of the price etc. Clothes etc come from eBay, NCT, friends and fam and neighbourhood 'sell or swap' group. Of course you have to be more careful to check the condition but so far it has worked out. The only things I'm buying new are wardrobes, rug, curtains, and I'm upcycling our shelving myself. I'm also going to get a few 'going home' outfits from Boden before due date to be sure I have a size that fits and will return the rest as they offer three month returns (score!) So treat it as a good exercise in cost management as god knows we'll need money later on! GrinConfused

Only bad thing is, bargain hunting is addictive. I'm tracking about 30 eBay auctions at a time as now that I have basics I want some super cute clothes for 2-4 quid... hopefully will not end up spending more oops. But the savings for me justify eg. getting accessories for the pram that otherwise I might have skipped.

Almost forgot, yesterday made a mistake of going to the shopping centre to pick up the Emma's Diary packs and went in to Choice which is like a Next outlet; came out with these two - look at the price for the awesome designs ever! Just couldn't leave them there!!!

glitter glad to hear about cloth nappies! Did you go for a specific brand? I'm gonna head to a nappy library meeting in a month to learn more because there's so many types and kinds!

Also slowly but surely starting to work on the nursery, cannot wait to show you!...

Hi, can I join? I'm due 18th July with DC3 and we didn't find out the sex. Just had a second 20 week scan as the first time round they couldn't see the heart properly due to position but second scan all good - although baby was curled into a ball!
