Gaaah I keep getting waves of freaking out that I (and DH) have to NAME AN ACTUAL HUMAN BEING in a little over two months...someone tell me this is normal?!

daisychain07 · 15/10/2016 18:52

All getting real here today. Picked up the pram and car seat and also had a 4d scan. It was lovely to see his face and see what he looked like but now I am panicking because the cord was wrapped around his neck. The lady said its really common and you can't do anything about it but it has given me another thing to keep me awake worrying about!x

StubbleTurnips · 15/10/2016 20:00

Has anyone started bouncing on the exercise / birthing ball yet? DH located ours and so far it's been used as a giant bouncy ball / football / space hopper for DD Hmm

BristolLFR · 15/10/2016 20:55

Posted this on a Bristol specific thread, but know we have a few Bristol ladies here who I didn't spot on that thread so thought I'd copy my write up of visits to hospital vs midwife units from today...

Cossham is lurrrvely!

4 rooms all with double beds and pools, and they'll have 2 ladies in active labour at any time (the other 2 can be people recovering). In reality people aren't in there any longer than 24 hrs as they only take low risk births and you'll get transferred to Southmead if there's any complications. They say they rarely have to turn people away. Transfer rate is around 40% for FTM, and only about 4% for those who've birthed before. But the 40% is as much those being transferred after birth (more severe tears, blood loss, help birthing the placenta, baby needs a bit of help or drugs etc) as during labour.

At southmead the mendip birth suite is closed until at least new year they reckon. But they've basically moved it up in to rooms right next to central delivery suite. There were 3 rooms, 2 with pools, and there are now 5 rooms but only one with a pool. The others are basically delivery rooms painted lilac with some mats on the floor. The pool room was lovely, the others were meh compared to cossham. You're not allowed to bring in your own pool. Once you've birthed you'll have an hour or so in that room then be transferred on to the mendip ward where they have private recovery rooms. Again, given its low risk births, you're not going to be in them for long, although min time is about 7 hrs as they have to do checks 6 hrs after birth. Advantage is you are right next to central delivery suite if something goes wrong.

If you're on central delivery suite, the rooms are basic hospital rooms like you see on One Born. You can move the bed out of the way and they'll give you mats/ balls etc for more active labour if you want it. Once you birth you get an hour or so to establish feeding/ have a shower etc then you move on to shared ward. Partner allowed to sleep in a chair (or bring their own camping mat!) the first night but then only come between 10 and 7 if you're in a while.

If baby is in nicu you'll be allowed in and out 24hrs, and probably get a private room on mendip ward.

I'm going to go and have a look at midwife ward at st mikes too. My main reason for wanting a home birth was to guarantee a pool, but after hearing that cossham is rarely full, I may take the chance. Reckon I'd phone Southmead first and go there if pool is free, then st mikes if similar set up to Southmead, then cossham if st mikes pools are taken. The midwife at cossham was lovely and said it's extremely rare they transfer in a genuine emergency, they generally know early if something isn't quite right and there's plenty of time for an ambulance etc.

I also wanted a home birth as I was keen to labour in water and thought if I'm in a pool at home in the early stages, I may as well just stay there. But, the midwife said you should only really use immersion in the final stages of labour so you get the benefit, if you're in it from the start you won't get the same relief when needed. She suggested just being in your bath, or leaning over your birthing ball with your shower running over your back (don't know how big her shower is!) to get the benefit of warm water in the early stages.

Nojo82 · 15/10/2016 20:55

stubble wat does bouncing on the ball actually do? Sorry if stupid question .

EmbarrassedNameChanger1 · 15/10/2016 21:18

Haven't posted for ages but have popped in and out to keep up so congrats notaclue Flowers

Have NC because I'm embarrassed and just need some advice. 32 weeks pg and have just started to suffer from really bad constipation...was in an awful state the other day and afterwards I felt like I was having a vaginal prolapse. Had a little look and saw something very small that didn't look normal, but it's, erm, retracted, so to speak. Went to docs, saw a locum, she had a look, but said I was too swollen to tell (didn't understand that tbh), not too worry, everything will be fine. She then poked and prodded my belly quite roughly and said it was too early to feel how the baby was lying (at 31 weeks!!) I was Hmm. Now I'm worried about going to the toilet, terrified of giving birth naturally, and don't know who to talk to.

SunnySideDownUp · 15/10/2016 22:35

I had the same problem earlier in my pregnancy namechanger. It's resolved itself thanks to avoiding constipation and doing lots of pelvic floor exercises. Google how to do them properly, and you can download apps to remind you.

For constipation, I have movicol, or you can use Lactulose. Plus I've significantly increased my water intake. Lots of fruit and fibre helps as well. Some ladies swear by prune juice.

Try not to worry.

barkingtreefrog · 16/10/2016 04:19

Urgh, wide awake again because DH got up to go to the toilet and it woke me up. Can never get back to sleep!

Namechanger try not to worry, I've had really bad piles for weeks now, and despite keeping up with everything to avoid constipation, every time I have a slightly more solid movement the piles all pop out. They then slowly retract but haven't fully gone away, I just keep using anusol to help sooth them.
lovely conversation

Stubble I'm sitting on a ball but only to help the SPD pain, which seems to have progressed to between my legs as well as round the front even when using the support band, pulling up my pelvic floor muscles, and on crutches Angry.
Can't bend down to pick things up without getting braxton hicks, and can't use my feet due to the SPD. Only two more months of this fun to go!!! Grin

StubbleTurnips · 16/10/2016 07:03

nojo it's supposed to help with back pain and do something to start engaging baby / get them the right way round. This did not work for DD though who was still B2B in labour Hmm

I found it most useful post birth with DD as it rocking on it with her soothed her from all the pregnancy bouncing on it.

Jfw82 · 16/10/2016 07:30

Anyone else found they've started grinding their teeth? This is third day I've ended up getting up because of jaw pain which I can only assume is from grinding my teeth in my sleep (all in one side and goes after I've been up a while).... it's bad enough that I feel like I'm getting up every hour to go to the loo without this as well Angry

Think will definitely be having a nap later

Lovewatchingrainfall · 16/10/2016 10:08

Thanks for the overview of hospitals Bristol I know however i will be giving birth at St Michael's the view of the others is still good to have.

What are you all doing regarding pyjamas in your hospital bag? i have been looking at Maternity ones but they are all so expensive. I was thinking about going to somewhere like Primark and buying the next size up, would this work or do i need maternity ones. So far this pregnancy i have just worn my normal ones.

Also Bras. this is a mind field to me, so far my boobs have not grown but i am hoping they will when the milk comes in. Do i need Maternity Bras or can i just get off the shelf shop ones in a bigger size?

Sorry about all the daft questions currently have a toddler who seems to like 4:30ish wake up and up all night too.. its been a long week...

goinggrey1978 · 16/10/2016 10:08

Jfw82, not been grinding my teeth but I know how you feel about the constant wee stops throughout the night and then I can't get comfy again after each visit with my silly sore leg and last night had awful heartburn as well, but been avoiding heartburn stuff in case it affects my dicky tummy, just need to get through this week at work and I'll be done, no more alarm get ups unless I have an early morning appointment!!

Nojo82 · 16/10/2016 10:14

Thanks stubble.. think ill leave the ball alone for the time being.

Im starting to panic that ill give birth xmas day, i have 3 other children at home so worried for them. They won't mind but they will have to go to my parents but my mum is working so it will b my dad that has them. Also thinking that ill have to buy xtra gifts bcos anything they are getting wouldn't be suitable to bring with them..

SouthDownsSunshine · 16/10/2016 10:26

love I've got a primark nightie and pyjamas in two sizes up. They're fine and have plenty of growing space still!

Bras are really tricky to buy. Your boobs will grow once baby arrives. I bought a couple of cheap ones in an bigger cup size, then got properly measured once baby arrived.

SolomanDaisy · 16/10/2016 11:31

I think it's handy to have some
cheap stretchy nursing bras for the first few days, so you have something to hold the pads with when your milk comes in! Then you can get measured properly when your milk has settled.

I also think a nightie is better for the first week or so, when you're bleeding a lot.

Bigfam · 16/10/2016 17:34

Lovewatchingrainfall I bought some pj's from primark as well, just next size up like south some mickey mouse ones that are so cool Grin also got a couple of bras with a D cup (for when milk comes in) because they're £2!!! Can't go wrong there.
I'm cooking a bloody roast, knee I should have done it earlier and not gone shopping, I'm dead on my feet and still have 3 kids to get bathed and ready for school, a hectic two year old and a puppy to look after all in between 😴

Popskipiekin · 17/10/2016 11:59

Bigfam don't know how you're coping with a puppy on top of your children! my parents have just bought one and are having less than 5 hour stretches of sleep per night in potty training her... zzzzzzzz.
On the pjs/nightdress front - yes I'm just going big and baggy, stuff I already have really, with buttons down the front (not actually nursing nightdresses, just the way they came) to help with feeding. My boobs didn't get that much bigger last time and I really wanted them to! Sad Blush They certainly did balloon when the milk came in, but they were pretty manageable after that.

Thisisbonkers · 17/10/2016 12:37

I'm currently wearing a couple of nursing bras (well, one at a time Grin), but I'm already in a G cup. Please don't tell me they'll grow even more Shock

TinyTickler · 17/10/2016 13:43

My friend (who is a chesty lady at the best of times) swore by the h and m breastfeeding vest tops which have inbuilt support rather than bras. This is consequently my plan, as I cannot bear the idea of wire free bras - I don't find them even nearly supportive enough.

DartmoorDoughnut · 17/10/2016 13:50

Non wired bras are the devil! Supportive tops hold you together much better, when milk settled down I was a 32G in bravissimo

Mozfan1 · 17/10/2016 13:53

I'm living in cheap sports bras as an wires make me an aggy and prickly pregnant woman 😳 I'm a g cup (at least) now, so I'm wearing 2 at a time. Oh the shame! Thanks for the nightie/clothes recommendations December gang!

goinggrey1978 · 17/10/2016 14:58

i've been wearing m+s non wired support breast feeding bra's since June as everything was too uncomfortable and tight, they are doing a fantastic job so far, was thinking i'd get measured before bubble arrived but it seems that after bubble arrives might be a better idea

Hello all!

Had my 34 week appointment this morning with the midwife, and have got my 36 week appointment booked at the midwifery unit where I plan to give birth (where I am they give you the opportunity to have your 36 week appointment there so you can see the unit etc). And my last shift at work is on Sunday. Suddenly seems very real (and terrifying)! Had to discuss today what to do in case I can't make the hospital due to mine and my family history (I had a quick first labour like my Mum, and my Mum's second was only 50 minutes.... Shock ) Starting to panic now....

Re: bras I went up 2 sizes (to an F cup) after my milk came in, so am holding off bra shopping until I know my eventual size!

Ugh. I have a sore belly button where I took my piercing out (years ago!), I have what feels like really mild period pains which I'm not sure if I should be worried about (very, very mild and baby is still super active) and I'm dog tired. Only seven more weeks to go and then I get even more sleepless nights!
