Hello all.

33 + 2 here. I actually packed my hospital bag at the weekend so I feel a bit more prepared now. All I really have to do now is clean up my grubby looking car seat and get DH to fix the car seat bases back in my car and I'll probably be about as ready as I'll ever be for baby.

I've written a birth plan (sort-of) but I've kept it very open. I've said yes to managed third stage and to vitamin k. Pain relief wise I've said just give me whatever I ask for at the time! Having said that given that I got none basically first time around (I had some paracetamol at home and my TENs, but the midwife in the assessment unit took my TENs off to do monitoring, and then everything progressed so quickly never had time for anything stronger) that I'm just hoping I get a chance to have some pain relief at all this time around. I've got my TENs machine on order to arrive when I'm 36 weeks.

I'm a late joiner but have been reading with interest. I'm due 13th Dec and team yellow - although a lobster/champagne dinner is on it being a girl (in my opinion). Partner thinks boy! Just had 31 week gp appointment which was a bit rushed as she couldn't detect heart beat hence a dash for monitoring. Thankfully we both felt it move so knew it was alive!! I've not even thought about packing bags yet or got a car seat etc, or thought about a birth plan etc. Very behind but feels a bit too real by getting those bits sorted! I've even stopped reading some books I was given at the labour part as 'that's for another day'. Fingers crossed it stays out for a while.

Fizzyjo · 12/10/2016 11:00

Put not out!!

OrianaBanana · 12/10/2016 12:43

My plan for no. 1 was TENS, gas and air and water birth. I didn't want pethidine as I was worried about baby and me being spaced out, and sickness (I get sick at any excuse so it sounded like a nightmare in waiting).

In the end I got to 42 weeks and was induced - I did use the TENS which helped in the very early stage (I have one on order for loan this time round) but everything else went out the window as I was not allowed a water birth, and we ended up with an epidural, forceps, episiotomy etc. It didn't help that DS was 10lb 6 either, and got stuck! I am hoping this one will be smaller, I have a growth scan at 36 weeks and was told if she was looking large they might induce early (so no water again....).

Mejse · 12/10/2016 13:42

I haven't really thought about a birth plan yet. I have already been to the antenatal classes here as they only run them in English at certain times. As this is my first I am not totally sure what the usual is in England but over here they do delayed cord clamping as standard unless there is an emergency, they don't use forceps at all only vacuum and they will almost never give an episiotomy. Managed third stage is also the usual. The pain relief options are mostly things like acupuncture, hydrotherapy, massage and gas and air. They do offer epidurals but the midwife at the course seemed very against them.

I had my scan with the doctor today and the little guy is doing really well, he is above average in growth and they can't find any other problems so she doesn't seem to be worried about him at all. They checked both his feet again and it is defiantly only the right one that is clubbed. Our last scan will be at 34weeks.
I know they are just trying to be helpful but I'm getting a bit frustrated with my family and friends constantly suggesting that it could be a mistake and that his foot might be fine. I have seen it on several scans now and it is clear that the foot is twisted inwards, I have accepted that and I'm doing my best to prepare myself for what he will need during his treatment e.g. he wont be able to wear footed sleepsuits so I have avoided buying any. I feel like we are lucky that it is so easily treatable and that it wasn't something more serious. I know its probably irrational but all these comments make me feel like they all want him to be something he is not and that his wonky foot means he isn't good enough.

This is my last week at uni so no more 4 hour commutes!! I have a week off for autumn holiday then I will be working at a school for teaching experience up until I am 38weeks. I only need to teach 12 lessons a week, at a school that is 2 stops from our apartment. So far I have been really lucky and a few aches and lots of heartburn are the most I have had to deal with, so I am hoping I will be able to make it through the whole 6 weeks.

Nojo82 · 12/10/2016 13:44

oriana my ds2 wS 10lb 6 too. I asked about early induction if this one is getting too big but I was told that they wouldnt unless it was way off the scale. Bit annoyed as it was an horrendous birth, we were both not in great shape after..

Bigfam · 12/10/2016 14:06

I'm really hoping the maternity unit has a pool free when I go in as I can't lay flat on my back because of the sciatica. Does anyone know of any birthing positions if not?

stripeyorangesocks71 · 12/10/2016 15:21

Bigfam I don't particularly want to be lay on my back for the birth either. Going to ask for birthing pool option. However if not available then will ask that I'm on all fours for the birth (it's doable, my mum gave birth to my brother that way!)

Nojo82 · 12/10/2016 16:13

I had my last baby on all fours and it was my easiest delivery yet. But i wanna try pool this time.

Kitch82 · 12/10/2016 16:25

According to my pregnancy yoga teacger lying on your back is the worst position for labour anyway as the birth canal makes an uphill path for baby and it makes your birth canal 30% smaller. What do I know I've never done this before but it makes sense. All fours or on knees with top half resting over ball or bed are her suggestions. Where are you booked in bigfam? My hospital in manchester has special birthing position classes run by the physios for women with back pain/spd. I'm booked in later in the month. Maybe yours has something similar.

Mozfan1 · 12/10/2016 16:44

Hi! Haven't really posted much but this is a great convo re positions. When I had ds I had to birth on my back as I was on monitors, first baby and only pushed for 4 minutes and didn't tear. So it's not always bad! And I had spd that time round also. Struggling a lot more with it this time round though Sad

Bigfam · 12/10/2016 16:47

I'm down on the south coast kitch
I find myself in this situation from laying on my back to begin with 😆 (sorry!)
I was able to use the pool last time and at that particular hospital there was only one, this time I've chosen the other hospital in my area that has an attatched midwife led birthing unit with 2 pools, it's much more homely and relaxed and if there were any complications, the hospital is next door.

Kitch82 · 12/10/2016 17:14

😂😂 when I say to people I need to keep my legs together to help the spd the inevitable response is 'well if you'd done that 7 months ago...' I'm hoping for a pool, I feel like a beached whale when I'm in bed bed, moving around is nigh on impossible.

SolomanDaisy · 12/10/2016 17:22

My physio showed me a lot of alternative positions for SPD. There was one sitting on a birthing stool, which she recommended but I'm not sure how comfortable it looked. There were various kneeling ones too. Her big recommendation is do not allow anyone else to hold your legs, as the pressure they put on is always uneven and that's where they see ongoing SPD after the birth. She is so convinced of this that she says to ask to use stirrups if they need you in that position for some reason!

I've requested a delivery room with a big bath, but apparently they're not actually big enough to deliver in so you have to get out for that!

OrianaBanana · 12/10/2016 18:07

Nojo we weren't either. I'm booking a session to go through my previous labour (they do it at the hospital it's called Birth Afterthoughts) - they might have some good suggestions for this one.

I can't quite bring to mind labour positions without getting flashbacks of the NCT course with DD1. Genuinely awful.

Thisisbonkers · 12/10/2016 19:53

The lady running my nct class demonstrated the difference in position for birthing. On your back is definitely more difficult. Getting forwards is key. She had a pelvis and ball and everything 😄

wilfrhodes · 13/10/2016 00:17

i want to try all fours or a birthing stool, but main birth plan will be "get the baby out as safely as possible for both of us".

fell over in the street on my way home from work today. appear to have escaped with only a very light graze to one leg, but it really shook me up. i have set myself a reminder to check everything over thoroughly in the morning. falling leaves and wet pavements (although neither caused this) mean i will be taking things very carefully from now on. my pilates teacher keeps telling me my sense of balance will be all over the place and i guess she is right!

still got eight weeks to go at work but i have a very lengthy handover period and my maternity cover is already well ensconced, so all pressure is off, thank goodness. i'm finding it hard to concentrate and am having to write myself reminder notes about everything.

I was told standing up was the best position, it lets gravity help things along!

StubbleTurnips · 13/10/2016 07:28

Ah wilf hope you're ok, I've nearly wobbled over a couple of times. It's frightening isn't it.

Birth positions are great if you don't get stuck on the monitor, I did last time. There was no choice except on your back.

Nojo82 · 13/10/2016 07:54

Hope ur ok wilf.. I never really thought about positions before had ds1 on back but he was on monitors, ds2 i was standing for ages but nothing happened but big baby so thats prob why i ended up with forceps. Ds3 was on all fours and it was a very easy birth but I also felt more relaxed thanks to the diamorphine. Def on birth plan for that again..

Crap nights sleep again. Keep getting dead arms n legs and its a killer. So sore.

Thinking of requesting to change my midwife after today's appointment with her. If I'm honest right from the off I've not felt she's supported me and has rushed through every single appointment I've had with her. Surely she's there for you to ask questions and tell her of any concerns or worries? I asked her about when the appointments will become more closer together with her a while ago now and she just accused me of not reading one of the many leaflets she presented me with (which I had read it turns out but there's so much info to take in!). There's so much more I could say here but I'll spare everyone. I guess I'm just not happy or feel supported enough by her.

I guess my question is, has anyone else requested to change their midwife during any pregnancy (current or previous)? How did you do it and how did it go? Thanks :)

DartmoorDoughnut · 13/10/2016 11:07

I don't think changing midwife is unheard of, it's all personalities after all and if you don't click you don't, I doubt they'd take it personally.

Waiting for my 31 week check - almost 32 now though I think! - why are they always running late?! Thankfully DS is with MIL this morning so I can sit and MN/FB Grin

TinyTickler · 13/10/2016 11:10

Stripey I'm thinking the same thing. She starts every meeting with oh hello we've not before (we have - 4 times). On my second appointment she couldn't tell me when the third trimester starts, which is fairly concerning and to be honest I don't really get the point of our appointments. Like is she meant to be giving me leaflets / telling me something useful?! Because all she does is test my wee, check the heartbeat, then argue with me about whether I can book the last appointment of the day when there are earlier ones free as she wants to be able to go home early if the clinic doesn't fill up.
