No birth plan here either but im up for everything.. Hoping for a nice fast delivery, some chance eh!! 4th baby so heres hoping. Was reading through my hospital notes and it says that babys weight yday was 3.3lbs, seems very big for me only being 29+1..

SolomanDaisy · 11/10/2016 14:48

I definitely want a birth plan, in case I end up there alone. It's just simple stuff like don't let me lie on my back as combination of SPD and coccyx problem mean I'll then find it hard to move; if I need intervention please explain in English; breastfeeding asap; and refer to physio advice re birthing positions etc. Things that will make it an easier experience rather than set up expectations about pain management etc. Not that I'll have many pain relief options I guess. I've looked at some Dutch birth plans and they don't seem to mention the injection for the placenta or vitamin k, so maybe they aren't options.

Eskerina81 · 11/10/2016 14:57

Soloman the Dutch definitely do the injection for the placenta as I had it with dd. They do vitamin k a bit differently though - I don't remember an injection at birth but we gave her vitamin k drops until she was several months old.

SolomanDaisy · 11/10/2016 15:10

Thanks Eskerina! I'd rather not have the injection, so I'll ask the midwife about that next week. When DS was born (in the UK), we were given the drops to give him until he was admitted to hospital, when they gave him the injection. I can't remember being given any option about it at the time! I'll have to ask about that too.

Bigfam · 11/10/2016 16:39

I had the injection in pregnancies 1 2 & 3, but not my 4th. My mw just encouraged me to do it naturally, I was so exhausted I didn't even think about having it to be honest, I could have done with it though!

happydays00 · 11/10/2016 16:57

Can I ask what this injection is? A managed 3rd stage what now?

FTM here and no birth plan for me - up for whatever I feel I need and just plan on doing what I'm told. Not so keen on the idea of pethidine as don't like the idea of me/baby feeling drowsy and out of it. Any positive experiences with pethidine?!

My midwife seems more than a little "relaxed" though so I do feel as though I'm a bit late to the party on a few things. This injection sounds like it might be another example.

Eskerina81 · 11/10/2016 16:58

Soloman & bigfam I had it as my family has a history of post-birth bleeds and I didn't want to risk it!

StubbleTurnips · 11/10/2016 17:15

My birth plan is:

Epidural - no pethidine / diamorphine
Vitamin k - yes
Managed 3rd stage - yes

I will be having the placenta injection, as retained placenta scares me re: sepsis. SIL was blue lighted back to maternity without baby due to it.

DartmoorDoughnut · 11/10/2016 18:17

Mine is epidural and surgery Grin

mistletoe1 · 11/10/2016 18:25

I feel like I would be setting myself up for 'failure' by writing a birth plan (first timer). Im probably just going to write a short bullet point list and hope for the best! I'm not sure how I feel about pethidine because so many people seem to rule it out but hoping they'll go into detail at NCT.

SouthDownsSunshine · 11/10/2016 19:03

snap dartmoor. Mine is c section, and the paed consultant has said what will happen post birth.

WyfOfBathe · 11/10/2016 19:05

My birth plan is TENS and then water birth with gas and air.

I was on some pretty strong painkillers as a teenager for a health issue and I hated the way they made me feel, so I'm not keen on having pethidine or anything - but I realise I might change my mind during labour.

Yes to Vit K and injection/managed third stage.

duxb · 11/10/2016 19:23

I'm a first timer and feel incredibly under prepared. Can anyone send links/offer advice about the vitamin K injection and managed third stage? I've not heard of either!

Pretty fixed on what my ideal plans are around pain relief etc but won't rule anything out should I need it

Popskipiekin · 11/10/2016 19:49

WyfofBathe have you used TENS before? How was it? I'm hiring one this time round, no idea if I'll get on with it or not but thought worth a shot!

SouthDownsSunshine · 11/10/2016 20:09

Wyf I'm the same as you. My birth plan first time was tens/water then straight to epidural. I didn't want or have pethidine.

Anyone else get really itchy and prickly skin? I feel like I'm being tickled by lots of pins. It causes me to twitch and wriggle, it's so annoying, especially at nighttime.

StubbleTurnips · 11/10/2016 20:14

Popskipiekin · 11/10/2016 20:30

Itching in pregnancy is a recognised thing isn't it, SouthDowns? Really sorry you're experiencing it! I've read it can - in extremely rare cases - be an indication of something quite serious related to the liver so best to mention to your midwife.

SouthDownsSunshine · 11/10/2016 20:50

I'm not due another midwife appointment for a fortnight (for some crazy reason I'm going 4 weeks between appointments) and I'm away on holiday. I might call and arrange an appointment for next week, and ask their advice. There's no rash. I usually do get eczema as the seasons change but my skin isn't dry. I'm a like a giant fidgety whale 😡

SolomanDaisy · 11/10/2016 21:00

I think you might need to get it checked out sooner southdowns. A former colleague had obstetric choleastesis and she was always warning pregnant people to get itching checked out.

I also had the tens/pool plan last time! I asked for pethidine during transition but as I was at home it was just greeted with shrugs. I didn't really need it anyway.
I'm planning to use a Tens again.

WyfOfBathe · 12/10/2016 01:19

Popski I have used a TENS before, but only on my leg (for same problem as taking pain meds) and I found it excellent for that, but it's my first baby so I've never used it in labour.

barkingtreefrog · 12/10/2016 06:28

southdowns when I told my midwife how much my bump was itching she asked me if I was itching anywhere else and said it was only a concern if I had itchy hands and a rash elsewhere (but I could be misremembering, I just know that she checked specifically where I was itching, as it could have been an indicator of something).

duxb · 12/10/2016 07:05

Thankyou stubble will have a read

Popskipiekin · 12/10/2016 08:56

WyfOfBathe ok thanks, glad it helped your pain before. Want to try to feel more in control this time round as this is it on the baby front for us :)
