Has anyone else not bought a single thing? Blush

To be fair this baby will be my third and my 'to buy' list is extremely small, and that's with having to buy everything again. I think it's literally:

Clothes
Travel System
Nappies
Blankets

My friend who is due around the same time as me has finished! It's making me feel very inadequate Grin

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 09/04/2016 09:17

oohmavis I have bought absolutely nothing and it's my first so I have nothing to start with! Too much choice and it's all quite overwhelming.

Welcome SheerWill

OohMavis · 09/04/2016 09:27

Alfie everybody told me to buy the essentials and then buy as you go once the baby's here for convenience items, because you will definitely find you don't need something. I ignored them. Both times Grin

This time, having given away or sold every baby item I owned thinking our family was complete, I'm finally listening!

Biscuitswithtea · 09/04/2016 10:03

There's very little that you need in the first few weeks. So it's okay not to have it all in advance. You might have a better idea of what you need/want once baby has arrived. With DS we thought we were kitted out but still ended up hot footing it to Boots on our first full day home from hospital to buy extra small clothes (ds was 7lb12 but built like a lollipop so standard newborn clothes fell off him!!) A friend whose daughter was born the day before never got to use her newborn stuff as her daughter was looooong so went straight into 0-3m clothes.

The hard bit is actually identifying what you're after, and perhaps where you'd get it from. So we know that we'd like to bypass the moses basket stage and are eyeing up co-sleeper cribs. Once we've chosen agreed on which one, then it won't matter too much when we get it, so long as it's in the house by c37 wks. We'd quite like a better baby bouncer too but that can wait til it's here if necessary!

Last time we got heaps of basics from nearly new sales and saved ourselves loads of money.

strandedabroad · 09/04/2016 11:28

Basket have a look on the Pacapod website, I like the look of those!

Chiana not sure yet! I think a soft sling to start with, and a Chicco Go for after (it's very cheap so I'm trying to work out where the catch is!).

SheerWill · 09/04/2016 12:07

I'm not massively organised to be honest, but we're trying tog get a few bits every month to spread the cost out.

We're also planning to skip the moses basket stage. I have the pram part of the Quinny Buzz for naps downstairs or out and about and I bought a Chicco Next to me co-sleeper second hand from ebay It's in great condition so I just need to get a new mattress. I'm just hoping it's not impossible to get fitted sheets to fit it as it's an irregular shape. I'm going to keep her in that as long as possible, so no big cot/cotbeds for us for now. I think buying as you go is definitely the way to do it.

My last baby was a winter baby, so I've got a few summery bits for this time around, like a sun hat and a parasol.

I have bought a few replacement parts for my medela swing breast pump which I used to boost my milk supply for when she has a growth spurt.

So it's mainly adding to things I already have or waiting to see what happens when she gets here. I like the idea of a bouncer but found ds liked being rocked in his car seat as much as being in his bounder.

Sophia1984 · 09/04/2016 12:10

quitecrunchy I know exactly what you mean - I have been driven to tears over car seats - proper panicky tears. My DP reminds me that all you actually need to start with is:

  • a carseat (so they let you leave the hospital!)
  • something for baby to sleep in (even if it's a drawer!)
  • something for baby to wear
  • nappies

Every else can be bought as you discover you need it.

I know that seems extreme, but it keeps me calm!

Regarding things like baby room thermometers, which it seems like there is a lot of marketing around, I found you can get one from the Lullaby Trust for £3, which presumably does everything it needs to to keep baby safe. www.lullabytrust.org.uk/shop?&nccsm=21&__nccspID=887

This is also helpful - what the NHS recommends you need:

Sophia1984 · 09/04/2016 12:15

Hi SheerWill! Molly's a gorgeous name, and it's lovely to honour your nan that way Smile

Dileas29 · 09/04/2016 13:54

stranded I wouldn't recommend Chicco go as it doesn't look comfortable for baby, I used it irregularly with DDA as it was so hard to get baby in and out of, especially with a snow suit!definitely going to spend more on one this time

hgleslie89 · 09/04/2016 13:59

Welcome Sheer! We toyed with the name Molly, but it would sound silly with our surname (Leslie).

I'm travelling down from Scotland to visit my parents in Birmingham. I usually enjoy the train journey but the tilting and being over warm (I used to be a cold person, can't deal with being warm all the time!) means that I'm feeling pretty travel sick right now Sad

We've got most stuff sorted now. I tend to panic if I don't organise things early and wanted to spread the cost, so that's why I've done it so early. We got some stuff second hand from my in-laws, which has helped. We bought an NCT Close Caboo sling off eBay which I think I'll probably use a lot at the beginning.

OwlinaTree · 09/04/2016 22:30

I love my close caboo sling, used it loads with my son, right up till last summer (16 months) he was really too big for it then, but hate taking a buggy to the beach. Loved that it could change to forward facing when he was bigger.

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 10/04/2016 16:34

Ladies my left boob is severely misbehaving today. Lots of brown/red discharge. I've had to change my pads already. Worth a phone call to midwife do you reckon or in the realms of normality?

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 10/04/2016 16:35

Oh and possibly tmi but it smells a bit sweet. No redness or a soreness on the actually boob though.

SheerWill · 10/04/2016 16:46

Hi Alfie, it's quite common for milk to come in around this time, and breast milk is much sweeter than cows milk which might explain the smell. Might be worth calling the midwife just for reassurance and your own piece of mind. I have had frequent whitish/yellow secretions from my nipples even after I stopped breastfeeding ds which has increased recently.

SheerWill · 10/04/2016 16:47

When I say milk coming in I don't mean breasts filling up, that's normally 2-3 days after giving birth. But they can leak. Sorry for any confusion.

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 10/04/2016 16:52

sheer thanks, I have been having colostrum discharge for a couple of weeks but it's been white/yellow this is very brown and I'm a bit worried incase it's blood? Or can it vary quite a lot in colour?

SheerWill · 10/04/2016 17:06

I just found this online at trimestertalk.com/pregnancy-colostrum-white-yellow-clear-red/#

Clear/Yellow/Orange – This is the type of colostrum most women get.

Red – This is known as rusty pipes syndrome. While more common after birth, it can also happen during pregnancy and is caused by vascular engorgement due to the increased blood supply to the breasts, which can lead to a small amount of blood in the colostrum.

White – Although some women may think white discharge from their breasts is milk, it’s actually still colostrum and white is still in the normal color range.
No matter what color your colostrum is, it’s usually harmless. Colostrum can change color multiple times, too.

If it's not causing any pain it's probably okay. but don't worry about calling the midwife, even if only for reassurance - that's what they're for. :-)

bearhuggy · 11/04/2016 12:02

Good morning ladies, I hope this finds everyone well!

Just back from my holiday and trying to catch up on all the goings on...it's sure been busy around here and welcome to all the newbies.

Jw I am so very sorry to hear the news of your sisters passing, sending you love and strength at this time Flowers

Thailand was lovely, really nice to get away for a couple of weeks and the wedding we went to in Bangkok was so much fun, back to the real world now I suppose!

Bump has been expanding and babe is kicking like a champ...having some down time really enabled me to learn it's patterns throughout the day and am now able to actually see the movements too which was a bit odd at first but kinda cool!

24+3 today, can't believe how quick it's going now...anyone else feeling like time is speeding by??! Feel as though I need to get organised and start buying some things from my list! Anyone got any tips on co-sleeping cots for next to the bed??

FourForYouGlenCoco · 11/04/2016 12:04

Just checking in, hope everyone's ok, we seem to have gone a bit quiet round here lately.
SheerWill welcome, good to have you with us! Molly is a gorgeous name, was on our shortlist for DD. Oh and I think the bump size is just second baby syndrome - I had a girl first and a boy this time and am also huge compared to first time round!
Jw been thinking of you and Ellie lots. Hope you're holding up ok and coping as well as can be expected. Hugs to you Flowers

Nowt new to report here! 24+3 today. DD back at preschool today after Easter hols so back to reality. Getting up was hard, we're all on holiday time! Might go back to bed Grin

Basketofwool · 11/04/2016 12:20

So after posting a link to that stupidly expensive changing bag on Friday, I went shopping on Saturday and found a total bargain in Homesense. Its called the Charlie bag from a random Canadian brand called So Young, I'm very pleased with it. Nice and neutral, a f* load of pockets and converts to a back pack too. £25! They sell in the US for about $175 according to Amazon.

We also bought a bunch of newborn clothes but I'm now worried that I should have got 0-3 months instead. So hard to know how much of what to buy!

A little worried this morning as baby hasn't really moved much. I think I have a lazy one but I usually feel/see a fair few kicks in the morning.

bear I'm pretty set on the Chicco next 2 me co-sleeper. Cheaper than the Snuzpod and can be used as a travel cot. I think its bigger as well, so baby will last longer in it.

Hope everyone is well. Has anyone heard from Lily lately? I know she was having a difficult time, just hope everythings OK.

Chianablue · 11/04/2016 12:20

Hi everyone. My 20 week scan is tomorrow I'm excited but scared. Dp is telling me to relax but it's so difficult.
Hope everyone is OK Smile

Christinedonna · 11/04/2016 13:14

Ahhhhh just spend ages writing to catch you all up. Pressed the wrong button and it disappeared. Let me see if I can remember everything now. Rang the hospital this morning for test results of the swab I done on Thursday about the discharge, was told to ring today so did and was told "it's still pending, ring back tomorrow" so frustrating!! Had a really rude customer the other night. She asked how long I had left and when I told her she was like "oh my god I thought you were at the end! You're huge, how many are there in there??" Cheeky bitch! I know I'm big (because I'm pregnant) but I know full well I do not look ready to pop! As if I'm not self conscious enough! Been test driving the OHs car the last few days as we're about to sort insurance for me to drive it instead of my car. It's a lot more baby friendly than mine. That makes it sound like I have a dangerous sporty car, HA NO! An old shitty 16year old fiesta than just doesn't feel as safe as his saloon. I hate getting used to new cars! Works been driving me insane so I'm very grateful for today and tomorrow off! 22+4 here and it feels like it's dragging!!! 13 days until our 4D scan. That seems to be fastly approaching despite every day feeling like 2. Just got ANOTHER delivery of baby clothes and realised that I have nowhere to put it all! We brought 3 big storage boxes and have already filled them, until our rooms finished being done (it hasn't even started yet🙄) we're quite limited on space so it'll have to be hidden somewhere for now! But then as soon as its done the cots coming!! New wardrobes so plenty of space, new walls and carpet and lovely French doors opening out onto our own balcony! I think that's everything I have to fill you all in on! A lot more kicks lately, especially last night. It was non stop!! I had my hand resting on my belly and could feel it like crazy! I love it! Wish I turned the light on to watch it but doubt the OH that had to be up at 6 this morning would have been too pleased! Hope everyone's enjoying the semi nice weather from the comfort of their comfy sofas/beds when they get the chance! I may try and squeeze in a nap before doing the 100000 things I have to do today! My sisters got food poisoning so I'm off to drop her some nice fruit and positive thoughts!

Hi everyone! Welcome/welcome back to all the new/returning peeps as well!

Christine hopefully you'll have the results tomorrow! Try not to let the shite people say bother you either. It's really unbelievable how people think they have a free pass to say whatever they like about a pregnant woman's body. I have a friend who does the same to me in a really passive aggressive way 'omg I can't believe how big you are! At least you have an excuse to look fat in a swimming costume now!'. I cannot abide passive aggression in a person but try not to let it get to me.

Chiana good luck with your scan! Are you finding out the sex?

GlenCo good to hear from you! Smile I'm feeling you on the tiredness, some days I feel like I've been steamrollered I'm so tired. Hoping it's not like this from here on in!

Bear glad you had a good holiday! I'm starting to feel a lot of movement now as well and DP felt it the other night as well. He was delighted, bless him, big smile on his face when he felt it. Last night, it felt like baby was kicking my cervix/vagina?! Such a strange feeling! Mostly feel it underneath my belly button or to my left hand side which makes sense because the sonographer said at my 20 wk scan that the placenta is partially anterior but wrapping around the right hand side of my uterus.

I'm also shitting a brick about buying stuff Confused I have some baby gros, bibs, Muslin squares etc already but not a whole lot. It's very daunting to think of what to actually get and what is actually needed. At first I was set on getting a travel system but I'm not sure now... Maybe carry baby in a sling initially and then use buggy rather than getting the system with the carry cot? No clue what to do and It's very overwhelming! Feels like I have a million things to organise.

23 +2

Dileas29 · 11/04/2016 15:13

christine how rude of that person! Some people have no manners!
I remember you had the pessary a week or so before I had to get one and I have had really unusual discharge as well (sorry TMI) but I feel like I'm very paranoid about the fact the pessary hasn't worked and because I had GBS with DD so I have an appointment for 4:40 to see the doc I'm going to request a swab too and concerned if this is worsening it could harm the baby. I hope you get your results soon, let us know how you get on.

We haven't bought anything yet as the loft crammed full will hopefully be enough! But dare say I'll see an outfit nearer the time. Just still on the search for double buggy/buggy board/pod or sling option!

23+3 and feeling lots of kicks and even got it recorded on video! DH finally made an effort to feel it while watching tv and saw it too so that was nice! I find using my phone torch also gives a few kicks, hopefully it's safe to do so!
