I'm about 45 mins away - if This one comes as quickly as DD I could well be having it in a lay by Shock

Lilliana · 01/02/2016 17:56

zeeka Italy sounds lovely. My friend wants me to go to beautiful days with her but not sure I could cope with camping / lots of drunk people / looking after DD among hundreds of people at 8 months pregnant Sad

FraterculaArctica · 01/02/2016 18:35

zeeka we have booked to go camping in Tuscany in early June, but I'm a bit worried Zika virus might spread there - there's a map on the BBC website that shows that the mosquitoes that carry it are common in northern Italy. I've made sure I've already got travel insurance sorted.

0hCrepe · 01/02/2016 18:43

I've been thinking about holidays too, would be good to take the big kids somewhere exciting before everything becomes babyfied! Was thinking America (cheap flights due to family connections) but that's a no go now of course. Didn't realise Italy may be affected too!

Fifi10 · 01/02/2016 18:56

As it's our first baby DP is going to take his holiday after the baby is born so he gets this on top of his paternity leave, so no holiday for us this year. I have no way of knowing what might happen with the birth etc. and my DM will be working so I wouldn't have anybody that could come to my house to help out.

JayBeanie · 01/02/2016 19:44

I'm thinking about holidays too, it would be nice to take DSC away before baby comes so they don't feel left out. Just not sure on flying or money yet.
Lili I love beautiful days but not 8 months pregnant!!

balalalala · 01/02/2016 20:20

We were looking at Italy for the beginning of June last night! Sounds like it might be busy with pregnant ladies lol!

SockQueen · 01/02/2016 20:45

We are going to the French Alps in mid-March - it's a skiing holiday with my friends but I won't be skiing. Should have had 12 week scan by then so I might announce it to them all on the first night! (I have told the organisers already so they didn't book lessons/lift pass etc for me)

We've then been invited on a trip to Shetland with PiLs in early July, but I'm not sure about it. I'll be 31 weeks by then and although it looks like flying should be alright if doctors are happy, I'm apprehensive about going somewhere so very remote from proper medical assistance. They have a small hospital on the islands, but it only has a midwife led maternity unit, and no neonatal unit, so if anything were to happen I'd be a long way (~2 hour flight) from help.

zeeka · 01/02/2016 21:04

I was absolutely terrorised by mozzies last time; it was awful. My legs were completely swollen! I'm not sure how the Mosquitos would have carried the virus to italy, though. Surely they wouldn't get that far? I will certainly look into it! It's fab as my friend has two kids, so it's like a holiday club for them all! Italian children have 3 mths school holidays in the summer (!!) so they'll already be off school.

liliana that sounds terrible! I've been to Glastonbury and can't understand how people enjoy it with kids and babies!

fifi I think I would do exactly the same in your position, the holiday time will be so much better used, especially if it's a c-section. We are both freelance/self employed so it's all a bit different (plus we will be super broke next year so no holiday for sure!!)

zeeka · 01/02/2016 21:07

arctica it's Tuscany for us too!

ohanami · 01/02/2016 22:44

We went to Italy when I was about 16 weeks with dd - it was fantastic, apart from having to abstain from all the wonderful wine.

Hopefully going to Spain this summer but we're meant to be travelling with friends who are due to have a baby next month so we've got to try to negotiate a point where they'll be out of the newborn fog and it won't be too late for me to travel (dd was premature so have to be cautious!) I'm not holding out much hope but there's aways next year if it doesn't work out this year.

I'm debating when/how to tell work... I'm changing teams soon (not voluntarily Angry) so don't know whether to be open at the start so they can plan for mat leave in advance, or to wait until I've got settled in so that nobody uses it against me.

peardrop2 · 01/02/2016 22:47

I have to go to Spain for a hen party when I'm 24 weeks. Dreading it Sad and now scared witless that Zika will spread. However, tomorrow I need to get my travel insurance so that I'm good to pull out if need be medical wise! If it wasn't for the hen party then I would be staying at home. I become very nervous and a home bird when I'm pregnant!

icklekid · 02/02/2016 03:00

Oh so jealous of you all with exciting holiday plans. I would love to go to Italy (favourite place in the world) or skiing sock although I would definitely be skiing! Am still trying to persuade dh that may half term we should go but given we have no idea how well/unwell I will be is hard to do.

I'm meant to be flying to Sweden in a few weeks to visit my sister and even that is looking unlikely given the sickness I'm suffering. Have been signed off work for 2 weeks and then will have too review. The HG thread is brilliant if anyone else is suffering.

Currently falling asleep at 8.3pm and then wide awake in the middle of the night!

ohanami · 02/02/2016 03:58

Sorry to hear you're still suffering ickle Flowers

Wide awake here too. Have to get up for work in less than two hours. This is going to be another interesting day.

SockQueen · 02/02/2016 07:15

Sorry you're having such a rough time ickle. I totally get the being wiped out by early evening and then wide awake at 4am - so frustrating!

I enjoy skiing but I'm not brilliant at it, and I know I would spend the whole time super-anxious about any little slip or fall and could never forgive myself if anything happened. Plus even if I'm a safe skier, there are always idiots on the slope who will cut you up or crash into you. I figure a week in the mountains with my friends will be good for me anyway, and I'm sure I can survive spending the day in the swimming pool while they're out skiing!

DrWhy · 02/02/2016 07:22

We were sort of thinking italy for May - June time as we have some friends, one of whom is Italian who have just moved to Dubai so italy would be an I between place to meet. Having the same concern about Zika though. I think the risk is that travellers from an infected area return to italy and the local mosquitos bite them and this pick up the infection. I'm very prone to bites and actually rather relieved we had to make are turn from Malaysia sooner than we planned because if it's not already there (and there have been occasional cases there a long time back according to the CDC) then I suspect it soon will be. Would be sad not to have one last final holiday before the baby arrives though.

SewSlapdash · 02/02/2016 07:44

We booked 10 days in France before I got pg - I'm cutting it a bit fine with being ok to travel on the way back!

When I was pg with DS we went to Italy with my extended family but we also had 10 days doing a bit of a road trip round places in England we hadn't got round to visiting yet. It was great, but it was ROASTING that July and I was so uncomfortable, even though I was only 7 months.

Kitkatmonster · 02/02/2016 09:20

We've decided to rule out Spain in the summer as planned, luckily had only just started looking at flights and not booked yet. Did a bit of research and the type of mozzies that are known to carry zika are in the region of Spain we go to, and there is an expectation for it to spread to Spain due to the links with the Americas, ie people travelling. I'm sad because it would have been nice to do a summer holiday without a baby, but I don't want to take the risk, I'm looking at cottages in Cornwall instead and thinking Spain in Oct half term instead.

peardrop2 · 02/02/2016 10:26

KitKat - oh god...do you think that includes Barcelona? Sad Having kittens now!

Fifi10 · 02/02/2016 11:53

I think part of the problem with zika is that they are learning what it does as it spreads, so they predict it will reach the med but it doesn't mean it will within the time scale they think or that it will have the same impact etc.

icklekid · 02/02/2016 12:12

Was doing some reading about zika this morning from what was said earlier and seemed to imply that if it does come to Europe, unlike south America, it will likely not hang around too long so I think I would still consider Europe (with travel insurance )

"Dr Gatherer said that the Aedes mosquito, which carries the disease, occurs in southern Europe from Spain to France, Italy and Greece, and outbreaks there are possible.

But these would likely be limited in the number of transmissions, and the disease almost certainly won’t spread in more temperate climes like the UK where the Aedes mosquito doesn’t live." link

zeeka · 02/02/2016 12:19

ickle I had really bad sickness last time but it stopped pretty magically after the first trimester. I hope you manage your trip to Sweden and that your placenta works its magic in time! You must feel awful.

zeeka · 02/02/2016 12:21

Thanks for the research links! Very useful

SomewhereInbetween · 02/02/2016 16:45

Just checking in quicl to say hi and hope everyone is doing well today! Hope your sickness eases asap ickle

Booking in tomorrow and meeting the OB, so excited! Also bought a couple of tiny newborn vests/sleepsuits (which I'm now kicking myself for since I'm only about 6/7 weeks and don't want to jinx anything). I forgot how tiny babies were!!! I've never been 'allowed' to be excited with my other two pregnancies, so much stress and anxiety and upset when I had my first two dc and I'm honestly feeling ridiculously excited and happy about this baby. Feel better than I have done in years and just want to talk about it constantly!

0hCrepe · 02/02/2016 17:07

I think we're opting for centerparcs now not too far to travel! Also our school hols here are at a different time to other places so it's pretty cheap.
Feeling so sick all the time, never had it this bad before. Not throwing up though in a way I wish I would to ease it for a bit!
