hi melsy! sorry to hear its still going on as before.must be so frustrating.

I did see about your homeopathy suggestion - thanks - we have a great homeopathic chemist in town which i am going to go to tomorrow - i realise i might have to see a homeopathic doctor or whatever but am quite prepared to do that! I'm desperate!

sitting here watching daytime tv - not very inspiring!- really should be doing something useful but cant be arsed!

burstingbug · 14/08/2006 11:23

Congrats Kitegirl.
Olivo, sorry your itching is still at large
40+4 and I had a sweep this morning, m/w say's baby is deffo gonna take its time to come out, cervix is still long and hard, baby's heads comes out of my pelvis when she touches him She's going to cancel my Friday appt and come to the house on Thursday when I'll be 41 weeks and have another go at a sweep and I get the impression she's going to book me in for induction for early next week. My liver function test results were all clear so thats some good news at least

olivo · 14/08/2006 11:28

hi bursting! you must be feeling pretty frustrated now.

accupuncturist just called, is going to fit me in tomorrow, says she may be able to take some of the heat out of the itching - i'll try anything! am gutted though as she is going away at the end of the week and i was hoping to go to her to 'bring it on' next week !! will see if she can recommend anyone else....

bugpurple · 14/08/2006 11:30

hey girls
can anyone enlighten me as to what a sweep is?
I am due today dont feel somehow that todays the day!! going to shop for a new sofa instead! and maybe have some naughty stuff to get things moving!

Got the clinic thursday, will they do a internal then do you think as i will be overdue?

bit scared now.

xx

olivo · 14/08/2006 11:41

bugpurple - a novice on this whole thing but as there arent many people around, might help. according to my book, they put their fingers up and sweep them over the membranes surrounding the baby at the top of the cervix to stir things up a bit.it releases prostoglandins which might help start contractions.

good luck!

burstingbug · 14/08/2006 11:44

A traditional method of trying to nudge the body into labour when overdue. The doctor or midwife does an internal examination and attempts to stretch the cervix and sweep a finger around the membranes. Sometimes this is enough to get labour going if the cervix is ripe.

burstingbug · 14/08/2006 11:45

A cervical sweep (also known as sweeping or stripping the membranes), which is usually done in conjunction with a cervical stretch, is a procedure that can be carried out by a midwife or doctor when a woman is overdue, in an attempt to trigger labour. The most effective time for carrying out the procedure has been found to be at at least 41 weeks. The procedure is performed via an internal vaginal examination using two fingers. The midwife or doctor places their fingers inside the cervical os (opening) and gently spreads the fingers apart, thus ?stretching? the cervix. This may encourage the release of prostaglandin, which helps to soften the cervix and stimulate contractions. Lining the inside of uterine wall are the membranes, which lie over the internal os of the cervix. The ?sweep? is done by the midwife or doctor using their fingers to ?peel? (or strip) these membranes away from the internal os using a sweeping action (round and round). This too can stimulate the release of prostaglandin. The latest research does show that there is a 17 per cent decrease in women needing to be formally induced following a stretch and sweep, but adds that this procedure can be very uncomfortable and may cause irregular contractions and sometimes a small amount of bleeding (spotting). However, formal methods of induction can be just as uncomfortable, if not worse.

Just a couple of definitions I've taken from 2 websites. It's all pretty much the same, they just word it differently.
My version is the following maybe tmi
You lie on the bed with your knees bent and apart so m/w has good access to your bits, she'll put on her gloves and use some lube, she'll insert 2 fingers and go inside quite deep, and 'sweep' in circle like motions to get the membranes. She'll be able to tell is your cervis is soft, short and ripe and efaced and ready to go in to labour, or like me this morning, mine was still firm, long unffaced and not ready at all.
This proceedure doesn't really hurt, it's just a bit uncomforatble whilst she doing her bit.
With ds1 I had this done at 40+3 and my cervix was ripe and ready iirc, and he was born 40+6. With ds2 this morning I'm 40+4 and no signs of anything happening soon

Hi

still haven't had my baby yet, am now 5 days overdue. Had membrane sweep at hospital this morning & apparently cervix is soft and 1-2 cm dilated. I am booked to be induced on Friday but the doctor seemed to think I would go into labour before that. I'm glad that cervix seems to be getting ready but not getting too excited as I know it could be several days away yet. Hope something happens soon though!

bugpurple · 14/08/2006 12:50

thanks guys

thought that maybe what it was but wasnt too sure, sounds pretty uncomfortable! nothing unlike a badily done smear!

lets hope he gets here before Thursday! got my mother in law over tomorrow so that may get things going!!! {grin}

xx

BigHotMama · 14/08/2006 13:37

Hi everyone only a quickie as got an appointment with MW in a bit for a sweep, not looking forward to it but will try anything at the moment to get something happening as still no twinges and I'm 41 weeks today and feeling rather down about being pregnant now, its so hard to move and do anything as in pain with my pelvis and legs feel very heavy to move. Cant seem to sleep very well too and woke up this morning crying about the whole situation which is not like me at all. DH is getting frustrated with no signs too.

Congrats to Kitegirl and baby Miles.

Freddy, I really feel for you hun but am not too far behind with 7 days overdue, here's hoping we can get something hapening before induction as I am really bricking it if I have to be induced, that would be my waterbirth out the window! I'm sure if baba is 9lb 15 you'll be fine as your 1st was a good size! x

Pucca your pic of George is gorgeous.

Aussie good to hear baby Zachary is on road to recovery x

Eeny sending my love for you & baby Alex x

Hoppy, I love Pink Floyd, tbh havent been listening to any music lately just watching daytime tv crap, need to have a good rummage through my cd collection for some good relaxing tunes. I'm more into female voices like Amy Winehouse and Alanis Morisette, also like radiohead, Keane and Oasis. My birthing ball got sent back to JJb sports as its only an excersie ball and I nearly flattened it to the ground ha! Obviously not built for big hot mama's like me!

Melsy hope your ok hun, try to stay positive, y0our doing so well with your hypnobirthing!

Booby, how sweet of your Dh to arrange that surprise for you?

Feel for you Olivo with all the itching hope you can get soemhting for it! Would drive me nuts!

Well hoping next time I'm on here something may have started off for my sweep now wish me luck! x

YellowFeathers · 14/08/2006 13:59

STILL EFFIN HERE!!!!!!
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Why????
Why????
Why????

1 day overdue. God help me if its going to be the full 2 weeks and I end up being induced.
Freddysays, you have my upmost respect!

Luckily I have an appt on wednesday with the MW and she said she would do a sweep for me. She can get blummin ready as she said she was convinced I wouldn't be around for wednesday given what the hospital said.
PAH, what does she know!

In a daft kind of way I know I'm being silly as its only 1 day but I really thought things would have happened by now or I would have had some good signs.
I did cheer myself up though and bought and coorie and kilmer sling

lunavix · 14/08/2006 14:17

YF I'm using retail therapy too! Bought ds lots of bits, plus a few bits for baby at toysrus yesterday, and bought bits off lx direct - ordered them yesterday and they came today!!!! Cannot believe it.

When did dd come?

MIL and G-MIL think it will come thurs, I personally feel it will be next mon or tues. Not working today (no kids came!) so I'm finishing off my entire pack of raspberry leaf tea (which must be a good 20 cups at least, thank god it's not caffinated) in an attempt to start things off.

bugpurple · 14/08/2006 16:22

YF - you have my thoughts, we are a day apart for delivery! I really feel for freddysays - god knows how she is keeping it together!

I have used ebay to keep myself sane, selling bits and buying baby bits and he odd thing for me!! and strawberry milkshake mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!

Tabs xx

YellowFeathers · 14/08/2006 16:27

Okay
here is my theory and forgive me if I have said this before

but

When I had dd, MW gave me a date of the 8th. Went for a scan and they said 4th. DD was born on the 8th.
This time MW said 15th, scan said 13th.

Soooo am inclined to think something might happen tomorrow????

Who knows, it keeps me going anyway lol!

Hi Purpleturtle!
Wondered where you had been too!

Is it just me or does anyone else check their bed sheets when they wake to pee in the night, just to see if waters have gone?
