Hi lubbo, tonic water is good for cramps, hip pain might be symphysis pubis dysfunction, I have it quite badly MW has referred me to physio. If it gets worse ask MW also have a look at \link{www.pelvicpartnership.org} they have some good advice. hope this helps

whiffy · 13/08/2006 17:02

Hey everyone. glad to do Pizza Exress again. directions for those who weren't around last time are:
Oxford Circus tube, come out at north regent st/east Oxford street exit, waddle past topshop maternity shop (if you can resist) and head up Regent st heading north towards funny shaped church thing. Pizza express is on the right about 30 metres before the church.

No news at this end. Have been laughing at another mnet thread about our 'lady gardens' and birth preparations regarding this. worth checking out for v big giggles.

Have finished work now so very happy. New nanny is working out a dream - already talking of making packed lunches for DH to bring in for me so I don't need to eat any hospital food....

Welcome newies to the thread - seem to have new joiners popping up everywhere. Have added my details below (have been imaginative with date as all my dates came forward and I'm now due late Sept.

Hi ladies, have been away at mums for weekend so not been able to access this .. been reading through - I get cramps too, but not EVERY night - I did read that it can be a sign of aneamia - I am aneamic, so am on iron tablets, and does seem to be easing. Might be worth speaking to dr about - I too suffer from bad hip pain, but mainly in the morning, so just thought it was from our trashed mattress (dd likes using it as a trampoline!!!) or me sleeping on my side with the exrtra weight. I have started to feel pain (like muscle pain in my groin) does anyone else feel this ??? Do you think this might be pubic dis... jobby?

I am also completely knackered - slept about 3 times today ... might be because I have been at mums and been able to do nowt!!!??!!!

Jobot · 13/08/2006 21:22

might be, SPD apparently is quite common, go to pelvic partnership web site it is really good.

girlygale1 · 13/08/2006 21:41

Hi Jobot - just read about it and I don't have any of the other symptoms. My sister had it with her 2nd son and had to have a c section. - have they said if you will have to have a sectionh? Are you in a lot of pain? I hope the physio will be able to help you to. Don't know if this is the same - but apparently chiropractors are fantastic for all kinds of ailments. My brother/sister in law live in Canada and everyone there seems to go to one. Apparently though they don't believe in conventional medicines - they say that everything can be cured by manipulating the body in certain ways (not sure how they do it though!!!) Any way (waffle on here) my brother in law swears by the help he receives from his - he has some kind of scoliosis (no idea how to spell that) and has never felt better than by his chiropractors help. Might be worth a try!?

Jobot · 13/08/2006 21:44

hi girlygale, dont know about c section till i see the physio next week (hope not) have heard about chiropractors too thought i would wait to see if physio helps.

girlygale1 · 13/08/2006 21:47

Good luck! Am going to bed now (for 4th time today!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I'll try to speak to my sister some tommorrow to see if she has any tips on how to make life a little more comfortable for you. Take care xx

luboo · 14/08/2006 06:41

Hi all, thanks for the tips on the hip pain and leg cramps. I will try the tonic water. Also, mym mum told me to put a magnet in the bed, down the bottom where I can't kick it out. Don't know if anyone else has heard this?!
Jobot, ta for the info about SPD - I had wondered if it might be this... will give it a week and then go to the doctors.
Hope everyone else is well... not long now!

emzickle · 14/08/2006 08:08

Morning! I stupidly mentioned my plans for where I'm having the baby last night round at PIL house - they completely tore me to pieces, telling me and DH that we are COMPLETELY irresponcible for planning on having first baby at home.

Then - MIL (who is a nurse) made comments about me in general, hinting towards it being the first mistake of many I will make with her first grand child. I felt like screaming. DH just left for work and says he's going to talk to them tonight.

What made it worse - if I have any complications, I'm asking just to have a C section - my experience with forceps (both nephews delevered with them, horror stories from every one concerned) is this stupid of me? MN'ers please be honest.

I know a C sec is a major op, but I cant help feeling it will be less dangerous for my baby, and to be honest - a little less scary for me?

Swizzler · 14/08/2006 09:34

Emzickle: I think your birth plan is entirely your choice. Make it clear to your in-laws from the beginning that you and your DH are doing things your way and not theirs. I'm sure things have changed massively from when they (and their friends) were bringing up kids, so they're not necessarily clued up!

Re hip pain, I've been getting this as well - pillows do seem to help. I'm sure most of it is due to being less mobile, so little I can do about it yet. Crawling on all fours seems to help with the back, though - would recommend it even if you do look a bit strange.

Also been getting in as much sleep as possible - spent most of yesterday in bed . Roll on maternity leave - seems a long way away.

We haven't decided on a meet-up time: would 6pm be OK? I was planning on mooching into John Lewis on my way to pick up some more babygros...

Good morning ladies. Had a busy wkend with my 2 older ds being home. My lay ins have totaly gone out of the window now. Ds3 was sleeping till 8.30am which has been a dream but now his brothers are back hes decided they need to be up at 7 . Good to have them home though. Taking them to the cinema one day this week to see Monster House. Been tols its pretty scary in parts. Hope it doesnt affect baby!
Ive been getting cramps in my calf muscles which are killers. I was in tears the other day with it. Been getting aching abdomen too but then being baby number 4 I guess my muscles arent what they used to be. Been putting a pillow under my bump at night. Has helped a little. Used my heart monitor last night. Got the heartbeat bang on first time. Baby was converse too which helped because he was easy to find. Have written meet up on my calender. Realy looking forward to it. xx

Tigerlion · 14/08/2006 13:04

Hope everyone is well and had a good weekend. I am just loving this rain!

As far as leg cramps are concerned, I have been told to take lots of calcium in natural form (ie through milk, cheese, cottage cheese etc) as it is meant to be partly due to a lack of calcium. I had dreadful cramps in my last pregnancy and have hardly had any this time around. Plus I have been drinking tonic water too so between the two suggestions something is going right!

I have noticed that some of the names came off the stats list along the way, so do double check that you are still there. I have readded the details for both myself and nicand2. If you are adding your name, do try to make sure that you have cut and pasted the latest version.

Bought a cot bed at the weekend and really looking forward to putting it up (what has my life become?!).

Hello everyone.
Haven't read all thread yet but hope everyone is doing well.
Just got back from a week at my parents and my sister's wedding on Saturday. It was fantastic-she was beautiful and my DD was a gorgeous bridesmaid. Think the groom cried more than the bride! Grandpa kindly slept in our room til we went to bed so we could both enjoy the party while DD slept-which meant I managed to stay up til 2.15 am!

After such a lovely wedding, feeling very flat today. All that planning, stressing, partying and excitement, it feels sad that it is all over.

Anyway, will add myself to list and have a read through thread to see what everyone's been up to.

DogMum · 14/08/2006 15:39

Hi All
Autumn has settled in here, so I've found my wax jacket in the turmoil our house has become since I announced we had a new addition on the way. I'm still out with the dog for a couple of hours every day. I wonder if that's why I'm not getting pains, heartburn, swellings etc or whether it's just luck of the draw. I am a hormonal grumpy cow though, so steady on before you go out and borrow a dog!

Emzickle, I feel for you having to deal with PIL probs at a time like this. If you, your DH and midwife are happy with your plans, it's really no one else's business. It's worth making this clear to them, so they don't think they can make all your parenting decisions for you. Start as you mean to go on. As for forceps, in terms of risk and recovery time, it's preferable to a C-section, but again it's your choice. I think the ventouse is used more commonly than forceps these days anyway. Is it possible that the horror stories you've heard have been embellished for effect? However unpleasant it is, it's going to be over quite quickly.

Has anyone else thought about perineal massage? It's supposed to reduce the risk of tearing. On the grounds that it might help and it won't do any harm, I think I'm going to give it a go, starting at about week 34. I got some oil, which comes with instructions from here .

Swizzler, 6pm on 21st is great for me. Already hungry.

And finally got around to adding myself to the list. Not long now ...

Whiffy, PMSL at the lady garden preparation thread. (Under childbirth for anyone who hasn't found it.) On the downside, it's given me something else to worry about. I'd definitely been treating this matter on an 'out of sight, out of mind' basis.

Gingeme · 14/08/2006 16:53

Ha ha ha just had a look at the lady garden thread. Soooo funny! Reminds me when my midwife examined me to see how dialated I was with ds3 and commented 'Oh you are a real ginge then'.

marthahm · 14/08/2006 18:10

hi everyone, i am also loving the rain. made dh sleep in ultra cold bedroom this weekend-what bliss.
went to a wedding on friday and think i overdid it a bit. had lots of strong tightenings across lower abdomen for several hours and then again next am. think will have to self impose ban on dancing. don't think it's a problem though as has stoppd now and the baby is still kicking for england.
welcome all newbies
emzickle deep sympathy re pil. my view is the best way to tackle them is head on when your partner isn't there. if you can start telling them now how things are going to be without relying on partner you'll feel much stronger, and won't get cross with him if he says the wrong thing. keep calm and try to never say anything you'll later regret-remember the glorious hours of free time you might get if they babysit. make it clear you appreciate their fears and you've made your decision together to do it because you feel its best for you. i finally had firm words with mil like this and haven't looked back, she seems to respect me more and we get on much better-still, any whiff of her overstepping the mark and i'll be ready!
re forceps, nowadays they are v. scared of litigation and often go straight for c section if they think it will be diff. forceps. when they do use forceps can be v. gentle to guide the baby's head and be much much less damaging than ventouse (from a paediatric osteopath's perspective)
dogsmum-have been advised to do perineal massage by obstetrician as have high chance of tear due to op i had last year. have been dutifully attempting the massage every day for last month-i think it's making a difference as was uncomfortable at first but not any more.
talking of unspeakable massage; has anyone heard of preparing your nipples for feeding (sorry if tmi) my intrusive mil was instructing me to start doing this at the weekend and my mother has been on about it too-maybe it's a 70's thing?

marthahm - thank you, i do feel more confident talking to the when DH isnt around, but the odd thing is, I really dont care what they really think about our plans, its that they insult my intelligence, because they think I have made an uninformed decision, when TBH it is them who have made the uninformed judgement.

Old smelly gits that they are - I dont want them baby sitting my child any way, she'll leave the baby to scream all night. They've already said that the way to get back to "normal" when baby arrives, is to leave them in their own room to learn that night time is for sleeping - and not interupting Mummy and Daddy... well FFS, no wonder my DH is so messed up
