I have been advised to avoid vit A and I am craving cherry tomatoes which I understand is loaded with vit A. I have been going through at least a pack a day. What do I do? Help please!!!

Sultanajo · 01/06/2013 17:12

Yeay pod! So pleased for you! That is mega exciting to see it jiggling around! Your journey back sucks, but well worth it to see your little bean! Grin

LittlePeaPod · 01/06/2013 17:12

Wans most foods have vitamin A however you would need to eat a substantial amount to affect the baby. It's like tinned tuna. Because of the mercury content in tinned tuna my MW said I was only allowed two small tins a week. Before I knew this and got HG I was eating tons of tuna.i am sure your baby will be fine...

penny mmmm, hot ginger and lemongrass sounds good! I shall buy the cordial as well, thanks for the tip.
Also - where did you get your doppler from and can I ask how much it was if that's not too rude? I'm feeling myself caving...
Garden wise - we have none right now, but I imagine it'll depend on how long you want to live in this house. If you imagine living there when your baby is 7-10 years old, is that garden large enough for that age of running around etc?

enormouse · 01/06/2013 17:25

Gorgeous pics pod. So lovely for you to see the wee bean.

MrsGSR · 01/06/2013 17:36

Penny the house sounds perfect! I wouldn't worry too much about the garden, I grew up right next to the beach and whenever it was sunny we went there anyway :)

Wans from what I've read Vitamin A is only bad in retinol from, which you get from animal products like liver. I definitely wouldn't worry about the content in fruit and veg, but maybe have a look on the nhs website if you are worried :)

Also for those struggling to eat well, I read a study today on rats who with malnutrition during pregnancy and as long as the new baby was given a good diet in the first few months it didn't seem to make much difference. I know it's rats, but it's a little bit reassuring for those who can only keep down salt and vinegar crisps etc!

MrsGSR · 01/06/2013 17:37
  • who had
MrsGSR · 01/06/2013 17:48

Wans found this on the Q&A page on the nhs website:

Eating vegetables that contain vitamin A is fine, including spinach. This is because the vitamin A we get from plant foods is actually beta-carotene, which can be converted into vitamin A in the body.

It's the vitamin A (retinol) that we get from foods of animal origin, such as liver, that pregnant women should avoid. Too much vitamin A as retinol may be harmful to a developing foetus and cause birth defects. Beta-carotene however does not have the same effect.

^You can read about vitamin A in more detail in the article and comments on the page about vitamins and minerals:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/vitamins-minerals-supplements-pregnant.aspx^

Sultanajo · 01/06/2013 17:58

mrsgsr the malnutrition is reassuring! Will stop stressing about the giant bag of mini cheddars that have been my staple over the last two days!

pod so excited but mega nervous about Wednesday. Trying not to think about it too much and enjoy the sun while its here! Went down to the marina earlier and saw a couple of cruise ships setting off! Alright for some!!!

Just got an email from my mates maid of honour trying to arrange her hen weekend for early next year and wants to know if we are up for a weekend away! Gonna have to be vague in my reply and say I am up for something and to let me know what they decide..... Arghhh!

chocoloulou33 · 01/06/2013 18:35

Too much on this thread to fill up & other one has already been started. Can't cope with stress of it lol.I've just managed to cook dd & dsd dinner which I've had to get oh to do all week. So happy that 2day is a better day hurrah x

Penny31 · 01/06/2013 19:06

humpty Doppler is from Amazon. It's called Angel Sounds and was £25-30. I don't use the headphones that come with it, they aren't very good. I use DPs proper ones. You get a little bit of gel with it but I bought extra because it doesn't last long. The gel makes a huge difference.

I watched a video on YouTube that tells you how to find the heart beat because you have arteries and placenta that all makes sounds and you can hear your heartbeat easier. There is a huge difference between your heartbeat and babies!

I'd say go for it as long as if you don't find a heartbeat straight away you won't panic!? It can take some time.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 01/06/2013 20:41

Hmmm, I might have a wee think about getting one penny... Cheaper than a private scan!

sultana I said yes to about six weekends of going to visit local societies and talking about my research (am a sort of academic, though I work for a charity) - going to have to cancel when I get to 12 weeks - and have been saying 'no, sorry, no time!' to the three new invites I've had since I found out. It's hard when you can't say why you may not be able to join in that far in the future...
I did consider going to one with a 3 month old though. Given these society lectures are very dull and samey, i thought it might gee things up a bit Grin.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 01/06/2013 20:43

Also, is anyone else ITCHY all the time? I get those v immediate 'OMG MUST SCRATCH OR MY EYES WILL DROP OUT FROM THE ANNOYANCE' ones a lot more now.

Sultanajo · 01/06/2013 21:24

I know humpty! Really annoying and I also feel bad because she came to mine. I was already stressing about the wedding in May, hadnt even considered the hen do! Plus, got two weddings next year, so that will be two hen dos! Arghhh!

Yes I am itching and sneezing, but its not preggers related - stupid allergies! Just been sucking on my inhaler and applying more barrier cream to my nose which is meant to help with sneezing - dont know if its having an effect, but like to think I am being proactive! Wink

Sultanajo · 01/06/2013 21:28

By the way, is anyone else finding their nipples are standing to attention more often than normal at random times? I was boiling hot earlier and I felt them suddenly stand up for no reason whatsoever! Blush

MrsGSR · 01/06/2013 22:52

Yes to being ichy and yes to nipples standing to attention!

Wansgirl · 01/06/2013 22:53

mrsgsr and littlepea thanks for the response. I was panicking already. Now I can eat cherry tomatoes to my heart's content.

LittlePeaPod · 02/06/2013 08:01

Thanks for the lovely comments ladies.... For those of you also using the Sprout App, I have found another App which is even better than Sprout. Not sure if you can get it on iPhones and iPads but its called Pregnancy HD (I think there is a non HD one too). It's brilliant.

Penny my will power cracked as soon as we got our BFP Grin. But it was also to do with the fact we had a mc in March this year. I have looked at the Doppler but I haven't cracked yet on that front... I am constantly surprised about how different things are around the country. You would think they would have sent you confirmation of your 12 week scan by 10 weeks.. Confused

Enormous thank you.... Smile

Sultanajo it will be great.. But I understand the fear and I know how important the 10 week mark is for you... When are you 10 weeks? Is it on Wednesday? With regards weddings, I have already not gone to an engagement party because I was so ill. I have several hen parties (including my own) in the next few months and a wedding in December and February..... Really not sure what I will do. BTW, I have forgotten what my nipples looked like not standing on end... Thy have been on end continuously for a few weeks now... Someone asked me if I was smuggling peanuts the other day... This of course then caused the Angry rage!

Chocco. Sorry about stressing you with the new thread... I really thought this one would have been nailed yesterday.... Ha ha ha Wink

Humpty I just love the thought of you pitching up to a society event with a 3 month old strapped to you whilst you talk about your research.... I just love that... I can actually visualise it.... Grin. With regards the itching. I get itchy but its a symptom of my anaemia.

Wans you are welcome... Nothing wrong with a bit of a meltdown now and again... In my case meltdowns/paranoia/panicking are becoming a staple in daily life Wink

Am determined to get out and about again today while its sunny - just need to remember where I left my energy! Grin

LittlePeaPod · 02/06/2013 09:12

I am too... Sick of sitting around feeling sorry for myself... Ha ha I need to go and get my "lady garden" sorted. Not been as been feeling so shit and seriously it's getting out of control..... At this rate the Amazon Forrest will be envious. Blush

Got my midwife booking in appointment through yesterday yay! DP is going to come with too.

mac not planning to move far - about a mile and a half away but just to a better house. I moved in with DP before Xmas & it's very much his house if you know what I mean. Also the nearest primary school now is not the best.

sultana I think you may be near me if you live near a cruise ship departing city! Oh & apparently cruises make for very hassle free hols with a sm child according to my friend who went on one with her parents & toddler nephew round the canaries.
