mythical - your sonographer sounds horrible. We all know that it's a medical proceedure, but it's such a huge deal for the woman being scanned and they should try and remember that.

The Leeds General Infirmary couldn't have been more different (at my 20-week scan anyway, they ignored me a bit at the 12-week), they couldn't do LO's heart so they made me go away and empty my bladder and then when that didn't work they made me go away for half an hour and walk about. They also asked if I wanted to know the sex. Then when I went again for the cervical scan the consultant showed me the baby again (which he didn't need to, I wasn't there for that) and asked me again if I wanted to know the sex and pointed all the bits out.

It takes all the magic out of the occasion when they reduce it to the same level as having a blood test!

The 3D scan will be much better though I'm sure as it will be all about you and the baby! I had a private scan at 9 weeks and the difference is, of course, noticeable in every way.

I think it's so nice knowing the sex of the baby, it makes it seem to much more real, not to mention all of the practical stuff. DH beams like an idiot every time he says "My daughter". :)

p.s. I may have already bought her first dress in a sale! Couldn't resist.

Basse · 21/12/2011 14:51

Hi ladies
Is it normal for the hospital not to confirm the date of your 20 week scan when you are in week 18? My hospital keeps on telling me I am on a waiting list, together with a long list of other women!!Shock I have told my midwife who said she would take it up with management. I am getting worried they won't let me have a 20-week scan because clearly they have a massive backlog. What are my options? What are your experiences? Thanks

MandaHugNKiss · 21/12/2011 15:31

I've been so rubbish at keeping up here... so sorry all! Perhaps a new years resolution, especially as my '20' week scan (when I'll be 21 weeks) is on the 4th Jan and it will definitely all be REAL then.

Finally feeling a few thumps here and there - can feel them from the outside too - but still sporadic. I'm expecting to be told anterior placenta as my others I felt regularly from 14 weeks. Now 19!

olittletownof · 21/12/2011 15:39

Basse - I was told the date of my 20 wk scan at my 12 wk scan. I think you're right and it sounds like there might be a bit of a backlog. I hope you have some positive news soon. With DD I didn't have my second scan until 21 and a bit weeks so there is leeway on it. You could pay for a private scan if you'd like. My early reassurance one was £90, mythical's been quoted £100 for 20 minutes which seems like money well spent and a worthwhile Xmas present for peace of mind (and of course enjoyment)

I had mine on Fri (19+5 this time) - all was fine. My placenta is now across the front and acting as a cushion which is why I'm getting less pronounced movements but all seemed well, it was a little shy thoguh so we didn't see much of the face but did get a high five and the ltos of the feet! I can't say the sex until after DH has had too much eggnog and told everyone at Xmas, he wants to keep it a surprise.

Wishing everyone else the best of luck with it and have a lovely yuletide.

Basse · 21/12/2011 16:15

olittletownof-glad to hear about good news about your scan. thank you for idea of private scan for £100, that seems more than worthwhile for peace of mind!

ballroompink · 21/12/2011 18:20

Good to read lots of happy scan stories! Just checking in really as it's a week to go until mine and the only new thing to report is that over the past week I've definitely started to feel movement, ranging from pokes to flutters etc etc. Last night I was watching my stomach as I was feeling quite a bit of movement and saw a couple of tiny movements from the outside for the first time which was really freaky.

mythical · 21/12/2011 19:52

Hey everyone, just a quick one to say our baby girl looks perfectly healthy including her heart! team pink !

LittleSarah · 21/12/2011 20:34

Hello all, great to hear about all the fab scans!

Mythical - What an awful sonographer you had, hopefully it had just been a long day for the man and he is usually lovely. It is rubbish though as the scan is such an exciting thing. So glad you had your private one and congrats on your little girl! Great news.

Congrats too to olittletownof, very excited to hear the sex if you don't manage to keep it a surprise!

Mandahugandkiss - Grand you are finally feeling movement, my scan is the 4th too so I'll look out for your results!

Miko and cupcake - glad too to hear about your scans, amazing to see all that detail, oooh so excited!

I am now officially on Christmas holiday which is just lovely. Bit of wrapping, bit of baking, bit of relaxing. Going to see a Christmas show with dd on Friday, not panto, just normal family friendly theatre, Beauty and the Beast. Then will be staying on in town for the night and seeing old friends before hitting the road early on Saturday morning to make sure we can pick up our turkey from local butcher before it shuts at lunchtime. Then lots of food prep (me) and last minute tidying (dh) before family folk arrive for dinner. Love Christmas.

saggybaps · 21/12/2011 21:07

Just popping in to say Merry Christmas & to add good scan tidings!

We had our scan on Monday, paid privately & went to FMC. After a crappy incident during my previous pregnancy with an arse of a sonographer.

Everything was shown in great detail & we have a healthy little bubba bouncing around inside. Really happy & all totally sinking in. Since the weekend suddenly I have quite a prominent bump & feel quite bloated.

I love hearing all the good scan stories & look forward to more in the New Year Xmas Smile

musicalmrs · 21/12/2011 21:52

Hi all!

So glad to hear all of the wonderful scan news - and mythical, not so glad to hear about your rubbish first experience - but glad the second one was a lot better!

MandaHugNKiss- My scan's also on the 4th when I'll be 21w+3. Seems ages away at the moment!

Pleased I'm getting lots of prods and pokes from whoever's in there to keep me happy though :) Only one more day at work before the holidays too - one last concert - which I'm looking forward to getting done and dusted tomorrow.

Also started the process of getting a buggy/pram and car seat today. The aim was to create a shortlist so we could then look at prices in the sales - but finding the world of baby stuff SO confusing. So many options...

luckynumber11 · 21/12/2011 23:18

Hi everyone, great to read about all he happy scan stories. In reply to basse and the scan appointment question - I am 19 weeks at the moment and only got told my 20 week scan appt today! And I think I only got that today because I was in the hospital in person today, with a midwife to chase it in person. I made 3 phone calls last week to beg for an appt, and like you, I have been told that my hospital is completely over stretched and does not have enough sonographers to meet demand, and that there were a lot of us on a waiting list. I have now got an appt with an "agency" sonographer they're hiring for a couple of days, (just crossing my fingers it is someone who is familiar with the nhs / up to date etc) but this is my only option. However some of the other women have been booked the following week to go to a private hospital (paid for by nhs), lucky them!
My advice would be to keep ringing up and pestering, and ask them to book you in at a private place if they can't give you a date, as nhs is required to do this if they cannot meet demand themselves. Good luck!

dreamingofanallotment · 22/12/2011 07:54

Hello ladies!

Sounds like there have been lots of positive scans (even if the scanners haven't always been as lovely) which is great to hear! I've got a proper bump now which I love. Grin Still don't feel like I'm feeling many flutters but I think I'm probably feeling them but thinking it's just windy tummy and also not sitting still and concentrating on them...I'm too much of a fidget!

Just a quick one from me as I need to go and pack before we get on the road down to the parentals for Christmas (where I can hopefully get onto MN from my phone otherwise I don't know what will keep me sane when I wake up at 4am most mornings...!) Hope everyone has a lovely festive time Xmas Smile and gets lots of lovely pressies!

Basse · 22/12/2011 10:43

luckynumber11 - Thanks so much, sounds like it will turn out ok then. I will contiue my pestering of the hospital next week:)

Yorky · 22/12/2011 13:50

Grief - I'm feeling my age today! Don't know what the Dr did yesterday in his brief exam when I asked for physio referral for SPD but I have been far sorer ever since :( And shopping just isn't a restful activity.
But at least I got my referral so hopefully I'll have an appt by the end of Jan

Glad to see so many happy scans and sorry to those who are having a really frustrating wait for theirs

goodname · 23/12/2011 11:09

Hi sorry I am really rubbish at posting on here, keep coming on to post and then not wanting to before I have read everyone elses posts and then running out of time before I get to the end.

Anyway, had my 20 week scan on wednesday and I am having another boy. Everyone was fine and had a really good scan as I had a trainee who take ages to do everything. I already have an 18 month old boy and I did want a brother for him but now I know I am having a boy for some reason I am just feeling upset that I will never have a little girl (only planning on 2). Its probably not helped by the fact my wee boy is currently a teething, non sleeping grumpy independent nightmare of a child who just says no no no and mummy mummy mummy all the time. I feel so irrational and emotional now, cant understand how I can be upset to get the result I wanted. At least I cans tart getting organised now, getting all the boxes out of the attic etc.
Does anyone else on their second baby feel filled with terror at the thought of dealing with two when the time comes? Last time I couldnt wait to see the baby and now I am just scared.
Trying to think of names too, anyone got any ideas for a name that goes well with Fergus (DS1).
So sorry for moany post, in general I am feeling happy but today I just feel sad for some reason.
Sorry to hear about the bad scan experiences some people have been having

Purestcocoa · 23/12/2011 11:12

Hi all,

mythical - Congrats on your little girl.

Yorky - I hope you feel less sore. I know what you mean about the shopping, I needed two days rest from my shopping trip. I had constant round ligament pain last night- although, it has gone this morning. I looked it up and it appears to be quite normal at this stage of pregnancy.

I had my scan at 19+2, but have been meaning to update you all for a while. Everything was healthy and I was told that I'm having a girl. She did warn me, however, that with girls they are only 90% sure. I've already bought cute little dresses Xmas Grin.

I hope you all have a great Christmas and a enjoy the Shloer lol (my mum said she bought me rose and white Hmm )

LimeFlower · 23/12/2011 14:14

I don't know about you lot but I've woken up this morning feeling huge my stomach seems to have gotten bigger overnight ! Slapping on the bio oil this morning as it feels really taught...

Hope you all have a nice Xmas dinner Grin

luckynumber11 · 25/12/2011 23:37

Happy Christmas everybody :) hope you all had a good day. Off to bed shattered now, my family relatives have now gone home but we're doing it all over again tomorrow with DH's family - it will be a full house again...! Not sure if I've got the energy for more entertaining but I should probably stop doing this and go to sleep!
Feel absolutely stuffed, and looking rather large now I feel...

Merry Christmas from LA. sorry not to have been on more but been busy moving house & starting our long trip. More updates in the new year. Good luck to everyone with 20 week scans. Having ours in Sydney!!

LimeFlower · 28/12/2011 16:46

Hello,ladies :)

Hope everybody's fine and all of you had nice Christmas.

Finally got my letter with Down's and spina bifida results-low risk but never said the odds-I'm happy with the result.
On Christmas Eve I got the scan appointment letter-it's 10th of January when I'll be 20+5.Any scan date buddies?Decided with DP to not ask at the appointment what the sex is-surprise,surprise:)
Not much of a bump except being bloated in the evenings.Nevermind, the baby is wriggly sometimes-got my first kick on Boxing Day-was lying on the sofa with hand on my belly when I got a poke that I could feel outside :) Wee one not happy with me eating ice cream-got a cold backside probably:)

ballroompink · 28/12/2011 20:10

Happy Christmas everyone! Have my scan tomorrow and am trying not to feel too nervous. Baby has been pretty active over Christmas :) We've decided not to find out the sex as we'd like a surprise, so am just hoping that everything else will be fine.

bonbonpixie · 28/12/2011 22:25

Hi Ladies, hope everyone had a very merry Christmas! Had my 20 week scan today (had to change the date as we shall be away on 30th) but today is 20 weeks + 3. So happy about everything, all normal. Although babies legs are measuring a week and a half longer than everything else, does that mean that they will have long legs?? I do have a return visit in a week because LO was camera shy and wouldn't cooperate to show us their face. It was all very cute tho.
Only realised after visit today just how worried I was that something could be wrong - as I was travelling in China at 5/6/7/8 weeks pregnant and was constantly sick - worried I'd picked up something awful. Toxoplasmosis or something similar!!

ballroompink · 30/12/2011 09:12

Well...the scan was absolutely fine - baby is looking good and has no issues :)

However just as the sonographer was finishing up he noticed something on my right hand side and what it looks like is that I have some sort of cystic structure, an ovarian or dermoid cyst, which is 10cm across Confused. It wasn't picked up at my last scan. I'm going to be getting a call today from the hospital to see if they can fit me in to see a consultant within the next week. They were surprised because I haven't had any pain from it or previous history of cysts.

So, really pleased that baby is fine but hoping I will be too!
