I have nipped home from the hospital for a couple of hours but am still on the post-natal ward because our baby is getting some special care and can't come home just yet.
I went back into Hospital at some time on Tuesday afternoon (don't ask me what time I was in a lot of pain and have had the full works apart from narrowly missing a C-section!) and our baby boy, Bob Joseph, was born at 1.21am on Wednesday weighing 6lb and 15 oz. I went in at 3cm dilated but quickly progressed to 6cm. I was whisked up to the consultant led Unit as the baby was showing signs of distress (at this point they checked me and were surprised to find I was six CM) and I needed to have my waters broken and a catheter inserted. The catheter relieved me of 500mls of urine(!) which was a massive release after not being able to pee properly for at least 2 days. I quickly went to ten cm and they found that I had meconium in my waters. After pushing with gas and air for a bit I was taken in for an epidural and to sign consent forms for a C-section.
I pushed the baby out in 3 pushes (really didn't want a C-Section!) and they barely had to use the forceps but I did have to be cut. Bob had to have a lot of stuff removed from his lungs and was quite floppy and not breathing well so was rushed to the Neo-natal unit after a quick cuddle. At 3am he seemed to be recovering well and by 7am was much better. The next few hours were a bit scary as he started fitting and he's had to have some scans and a Lumbar puncture but has been stable for over 24 hours and should, barring any other issues, make a full recovery.
It's been a very emotional couple of days and I've been sat on a ward without my baby expressing colostrum like mad inbetween trips to the Unit. Today's news has been very good and we are feeling very hopeful for his future. I hope to be discharged tomorrow as it's hard being on the ward (sleep is impossible) but we are very close to the hospital so can be there in a flash.
Can't wait to have him home and start doing all the stuff new parents do for their babies. DH was amazing through the whole labour, specially considering how long the latent phase went on for and how little sleep we both had, but we're both very emotional and spaced out by it all. I feel like days have gone by rather than hours and am really looking forward to Christmas at home.
Spent 25 minutes attached to a breastpump today and before that having my boobs manhandled by midwives. Apparently I am producing a lot of milk and really hope that I will be able to put him to the breast once he is out of special care.
What a drama!
