Funeral songs etc needed for our baby

TwittleBee · 05/07/2019 09:28

Our beautiful baby boy died at 5 days old yesterday we are completely lost.

This is actually DH's first funeral and today also marks the due date of our other baby who I MMC end of last year.

We have a 2 year old son; I was considering using songs that he likes but DH said he doesn't want DS to associate his favourite things with grief.

Also what else do we need to consider? We will be contacting a funeral director today.

No song, but i know someone who found great comfort in this poem.

Into the Hour by Elizabeth Jennings

I have come into the hour of a white feeling.
... Grief's surgery is over and I wear
The scar of my remorse and of my feeling.

I have come into a sudden sunlit hour
When ghosts are scared to corners. I have come
Into the time when grief begins to flower

Into a new love. It had filled my room
Long before I recognized it. Now
I speak it's name. Grief finds its good way home.

The apple-blossom's handsome on the bough
And Paradise spreads round. I touch it's grass.
I want to celebrate but don't know how.

I need not speak though everyone I pass
Stares at me kindly. I would put my hand
Into their hands. Now I have lost my loss

In some way I may later understand.
I hear the singing of the summer grass.
And love, I find, has no considered end,

Nor is it subject to the wilderness
Which follows death. I am not traitor to
A person or a memory. I trace

Behind that love another which is running
Around, ahead. I need not ask its meaning.

I am so so sorry to for your loss.

AWhistlingWoman · 05/07/2019 14:22

I am so sorry Twittlebee, how devastating for you and your family.

We had Nick Cave's 'Into My Arms' for my daughter's funeral. She died when she was three days old.

Godspeed as suggested by rubaiyat above is also beautiful.

We had the prayer for the burial of a child from The Book of Common Prayer for the reading.

I wish I could remember more about the practicalities so that I could offer more advice but it all seemed to happen in such a blur that I can't remember much.

My thoughts are with you, your DH and your little boy as you say goodbye to your son Flowers

SilverDapple · 05/07/2019 14:26

I can't even imagine the pain you must be in, I'm so sorry.

Song wise how about Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole? Such a beautiful song.

Take good care of yourself xx

PickledChicory · 05/07/2019 14:26

I'm so sorryFlowers
Do you know what kind of service your are having or where you are having it as that may dictate choices and whether you would have hymns or more traditional music. Any cultural influences scottish/irish or further afield?
Some songs I've taken comfort in
Sea of Love-Cat Power
Golden Slumber-Jennifer Hudson version
Over the rainbow-Israel Kamakawiwoʻole version
Not the same thing but I agree with your dh that it might not be best to pick songs that you listen to a lot. We had Moon River for my Aunt and I just go to pieces when I hear it.
Sending all my love and hoping that you get plenty of help and support and all arrangements go smoothly x

keepingbees · 05/07/2019 14:31

So sorry for your loss Thanks

Have a listen to Fly by Celina Dion x

MrsGaryLightbody · 05/07/2019 14:36

I'm so sorry for your losses. I would recommend Arms of the Angel too. We used it in the family twice. It's not an over popular song that isn't really used in "lift music" which helps . Somewhere over the rainbow is played quite a bit and always upsets a family member that doesn't expect to hear it whilst shopping.
Take care x

foxyfemke · 05/07/2019 15:30

I have no suggestions, but wanted to say I'm so sorry to read such heartbreaking news.

TwittleBee · 05/07/2019 17:42

Thank you everyone, really appreciate having a few songs to have a listen to later. And I'm so sorry to hear about your losses too Flowers

It's all so surreal, had to register his birth and death together today. Just broke down doing it, feels so wrong.

We are planning a cremation, a simple service - mainly music with maybe something read out about our gorgeous boy.

The two songs I've come across that I think would really be perfect for us is Phil Collins, should be in my heart (we are a Disney family) and Birdy, Wings.

I cried reading your post yesterday. I am so so sorry for your loss.

What about A thousand years by Christina Perri?

sqeakywheel · 05/07/2019 18:20

I'm so sorry for your loss. Utterly heartbreaking. I wondered about Tears in Heaven and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. I particularly like the last song, it's very evocative of how love feels. 💐💐

Mynamenotaccepted · 05/07/2019 18:55

My heart goes out to you both. Life is so cruel sometimes
Do not know if it is appropriate but we had Beautiful Boy by John Lennon at our son's funeral but he was 13.

Ellieboolou27 · 05/07/2019 19:03

@TwittleBee I've walked in your shoes and it's pain like I've never experienced.

I had bright eyes by Simon & Garfunkel for my baby boy. Also a poem called snowdrop.

Whatever you choose it will be special and perfect. My heart goes out to you.
