What do you think of Esmae as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

gem is clearly upset by the piss taking why dont you all leave her alone as i commented before this is a thread about a name choice not spelling correction

ShadeofViolet · 18/03/2010 16:10

If you like Mae then why not just use that?

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2010 16:20

Because she likes Esmae.

I still don't understand why people ask strangers on an internet forum for their opinions on a name, then get upset when folk are honest.

gemcgem · 18/03/2010 16:23

i understand people aint all going to like my name choice! the world would be very boring if they did ! but to pass comment on how i spell ??

But it's not that people dislike the name Esme,(infact I think most people quite like it) it's that they find the spelling Esmae a little unfortunate.

5DollarShake · 18/03/2010 16:28

But gem - if you're getting this upset about a bunch of anonymous randoms on t'internet having a go at your spelling, you've got a lifetime of it to look forward to, if you go down the 'Esmae' route.

That's the point - don't you see? We're doing you a favou, really.

littlemissm · 18/03/2010 16:33

gem- dont rise to it i spell things the way i do because its quicker for instance b4-before y - why. 4get- forget. Huni-honey i do this because i want 2 not because i cant spell. Its other people being stuck up everybody new wot u was saying they just want 2 b picky. Now lets see if i get slated 4 the way i chose to write this msg.

Eglu · 18/03/2010 16:38

gemcgem - You asked for opinions and you got them. If you choose to spell a name in an unusual way you are going to get comments on that too.

I like unusual names, some of which would be slated on here. THerefore I wouldn't ask opinions as all I care about is if I like it.

Don't ask if you can't handle honest answers.

crumpette · 18/03/2010 16:40

gem, you can call your DD whatever you want. But you asked for opinions, and you've got honest opinions. I think pretty much everyone loves the name Esme but some people are trying to help both you and also the child you are bestowing it upon in suggesting that you spell it in a more traditional way. It's your choice entirely, though.

littlemissm · 18/03/2010 16:41

Yes Eglu but gem didnt ask for opinions on how she spells did she.

StuffedFullOfNothing · 18/03/2010 16:42

I would think parents couldn't spell. Sorry!

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2010 16:44

gem- Don't rise to it. I spell things the way I do because it's quicker. For instance: b4-before y - why. 4get- forget. Huni-honey I do this because I want to not because I can't spell. Its other people being stuck up. Everybody Knew what you were saying, they just want to be picky. Now lets see if I get slated for the way I have chosen to write this message.

Translated for anyone who found it as painfully difficult to read as I did.

5DollarShake · 18/03/2010 16:45

Err, littlemissm, yes she did! On how to spell Esme...?

Go ahead with your txt spk - personally, I'd far rather be thought of as stuck up, than a bit fick cos I talk like a teenager, innit...

chaostrulyreigns · 18/03/2010 16:46

Well gcg I think you need to decide if you are happy with the spelling of it - FWIW it's worth I think it's a lovely name and blends beautifully with the other 2 smashing names you already have.

I am a traditionalist though, and would choose the variation of the name most recognisable, but that is just my opinion.

littlemissm · 18/03/2010 16:51

Dollershake- gem was asking about the spelling variation not on her grammar & how do you know i might be a teenager or a very trendy down with it mum

5DollarShake · 18/03/2010 16:52

There is nothing trendy about anyone over the age of 17 using text speak.

CinderellaRach · 18/03/2010 16:52

Agree with what 5DollarShake says

apostrophesrock · 18/03/2010 16:55

Bravo Lynette.

littlemissm · 18/03/2010 16:58

None of you are better than anyone else it shouldnt matter how people choose to spell names or choose how to write or speak I have been a member of mumsnet for many yrs & recently i think it should be renamed bitchnet because that is how alot of people come across. People ask for opinions not always nice ones but there is no need for people to become bitchy

justallovertheplace · 18/03/2010 17:00

Well don't let the door bang your arse on the way out

mathanxiety · 18/03/2010 17:03

How you spell it is part of what makes it an 'attractive name' or a 'potential problem name' for your DD, gemcgem. How you spell it, when it already has an acceptable spelling, makes a difference in how your DD and you are perceived.

Esme is a lovely name, but Esmae is a 'potential problem name'.

littlemissm · 18/03/2010 17:03

To just add the way some of you have gone on in this thread would come across to some as bullying & your all supposed to be respectable adults. You would be horrified if your children done it wouldnt you?

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2010 17:08

littlemissm - witting and speaking are ways of communicating. There for it is important how we write and speak and type if we want to get our message across to others clearly.

What we name our children, and how we dress them sends out an immediate message to other people about what type of person we are.

While people should never judge others on appearances alone, it's human nature to make quick assumptions about people, based on their name and how they look and speak.

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2010 17:09

And I have certainly never, ever claimed to be respectable.

hoofhearted · 18/03/2010 17:09

Sorry but I really don't like the name....it is IMO a 'dull' name and sits with Maud and Ethel. Sorry
