What do you think of Esmae as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Esmé is a nice name (the next Isla though if that bothers you) but Esmae looks erm chavtastic, creative, illiterate and just horrible!

Horton · 17/03/2010 21:30

Gem, it may be on the Baby Name Finder, but only because you added it! Nobody else thinks this is a possible spelling of Esme. Don't do it. It's awful.

I know an female Esme in the UK who gets called Es-mee.

I would pronounce Esme as Es-mee, unless told otherwise.

I would pronoucne Esmae as Es-may, unless told otherwise.

And, as an earlier poster mentioned, Esme is traditionally a boys name, whereas Esmee is the girls' version.

ShadeofViolet · 17/03/2010 22:38

If the opinions of your friends and family matter so much then why ask?

Horton - Did you add the Kloe-Maey? Now that is creative!

PorphyrophillicPixie · 17/03/2010 22:53

sorry, must agree with madwoman and 5dollar on this one. Just because it's intentional to you, it doesn't make it look intentional, it just makes you look silly.

OP, if you didn't want honest answers why on earth did you bother asking? You wanted everybody to say "Wow, that's so original and pretty and awesome!" but it's not, just look at the other forums here and don't get in a pissy mood with everyone when they give you the honest answers you asked for.

All said in the nicest but bluntest way possible of course. Don't come on MN and then get annoyed with honest answers, it just doesn't work.

parentrapped · 17/03/2010 23:09

love it.very elegant .lady.dont ask anyones opinions-just do it.

madwomanintheattic · 18/03/2010 02:14

lol, you just can't help some people. poor little mite. fingers crossed you have a boy, op.

SirBoobAlot · 18/03/2010 02:34

Lovely name - but why not just use Esme? TBH spelling it like that just makes you look like you can't spell.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 18/03/2010 03:56

Is Esme getting popular?

Bloody pop culture, stealing my shortlist.

I just googled Esmae baby name and got a bunch of "did you mean Esme" links. IMO, if even Google thinks you're spelling it wrong, you're spelling it wrong.

When I forced it to find Esmae, we are the third link. The second link is a forum full of people saying 'It's spelt Esme'.
The fourth link is a post asking for opinions between
"Riley Jae vs. Kiley Esmae"

I think that speaks for itself.

Esme with an accent over the e is pronounced Es-may.

Esme without the accent is pronounced Es-me

much prefer Es-me without the accent personally, but hey spell it however you want!x

littlemissm · 18/03/2010 09:38

Spell it how you want huni @ the end of the day the name is pronounced the same no matter what the spelling is. I sometimes feel its better to spell a name the way it is pronounced my name is Marijka a name i really hate as no 1 can ever pronounce it so sometimes i spell it how it is said MARAYKA. I have a daughter & we spell her name Baylee not Bailey as in the book we got the name from Baylee was a varient spelling & in the girls name section. The spelling Bailey is used more for boys.Esme & Esmae are the same name just with a different spelling theres lots of names with varients so dont worry about it huni

CinderellaRach · 18/03/2010 09:54

Absolutely awful gemgem.Agree with lots of other mn's it's silly and chav-tastic...

PuppyMonkey · 18/03/2010 10:05

I have an Esme and hell would freeze over before I or anyone I know would pronounce it Es- May. I pronounce it in the Scottish tradition of Es- me. Much nicer.

p.s I'm not really here, I've given MN up for Lent, but this thread has made me cross with all the know-it-all statements about pronouncing it Esmay. Greeee.
