What do you think of Esmae as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2010 17:11

I would be horrified if my children misused the past tense of did/done.

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2010 17:12

Or should that be the past tense of "do"?

mathanxiety · 18/03/2010 17:19

Littlemissm, it shouldn't matter how we choose to spell names, etc., but fact is it does.

5DollarShake · 18/03/2010 17:22

Oh Lynette - me too!!

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 18/03/2010 17:37

Lynette - it's writing and therefore. I do hope no-one judges you, or bases their opinions of you on those errors alone.

Goodness, some of you have rather let yourselves down on this thread. Very unpleasant.

CinderellaRach · 18/03/2010 17:43

I think people just can't stand stupidity! Why shouldn't we be allowed to correct their awful spelling??People need to develop thicker skins.God knows how they get through life in the real world!

ShadeofViolet · 18/03/2010 17:50

At the top of the thread I think it was the OP that mentioned the 'R' word. She bought the tone of the thread down from there.

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2010 17:53

Thanks, MaisietheMorningsideCat, I am probably one of the poorest spellers on MN, (and my typing's none too hot)so I'm not quite sure what came over me. Actually I hate having my spelling corrected, so really should have read though my own posts.

gemcgem....call your baby what the hell you like. Just don't ask other people for their opinions. Especailly strangers. Or people you don't like.

Spell it how you want ...why worry what people on here think ..with their nice pretentious middle class names

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 18/03/2010 18:09

Cinderella - please don't speak in the 3rd person. If you believe that the spelling of Esmae is somehow the epitome of stupidity, then say so - but don't purport to speak for people in general. Oh - and please put spaces between each of the words in your sentences, because without them your sentence structure and puntuation becomes appallingly, and it makes you look stupid.

Oh, the irony is just delicious!

littlemissm · 18/03/2010 18:22

Spelling a name differently does not matter it doesnt make the person with a variant of a name a lesser person than the one with it spelt correctly. Also the spelling thing -so someone could post on here with a learning difficulty & be classed as thick & have the piss taken out of them thats o.k is it. There could be an actual reason why some people spell the way they do. As for me it is a choice.

gemcgem · 18/03/2010 19:01

littlemissm thankyou ! esmae is a choice not a mistake, an i hope it wouldnt make a difference to her own life choice's because of how i name was spelt !?

Thankyou MaisytheMorningsideCat

You really do learn something new every day

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 18/03/2010 19:52

Don't you just.

muggglewump · 18/03/2010 19:52

gemcgem, you should print that out and laminate it so you/your DD can show it to people because even if it is a correctly spelled name, people will assume you can't spell.

usualsuspect · 18/03/2010 19:58

I wouldn't assume she couldn't spell .I would assume she spelt the name how she wanted too

CinderellaRach · 18/03/2010 20:20

Oh and MaisytheMorningsideCat it's punctuation not 'puntuation'!!!
You had the cheek to call me stupid?

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 18/03/2010 20:57

Ah, but I didn't criticise the OP for her spelling whilst posting poor grammar myself now, did I? If you expect high standards from others than at least achieve them yourself.

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 18/03/2010 20:59

then

runnybottom · 18/03/2010 21:16

But lots of those names....well, aren't. They are random sounds.

You asked what people thought, and the general consensus from many seems to be that people will think you can't spell the name properly. Thats certainly what I thought when I saw the title.

You can call your child whatever you wish. I would have thought that you wouldn't intentionally give a child a name that most assume is mis-spelt, but its up to you. Hardly bad form for people to point this out to you when you ask though.

usualsuspect · 18/03/2010 21:22

I would pronounce Esme as Esmee tho ...

The thing is, Esmae is a really lovely name. If the OP had asked for opinions on Kandeece-AimeeRae then I could have understood the sharp intakes of breath, but Esmae? Hardly the worst name in the world, regardless of spelling...it's fairly innocuous really.
