What do you think of Esmae as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

"I agree with those who say Esmae will spend her life spelling her name"
Absolute RUBBISH - My daughter Esmae is 19 and has never had to spell her name - Esme sounds like' here's me' or the Smee character out of Peter Pan. Esmae is much nicer.

ellalouise90 · 26/05/2018 22:56

I love it 😍 and preferred it pronounced as Es-may so much more 😍 really like how you want to spell it to! 💖💖 I also love the spelling Esmé 🤩🤩🤩

Cosmoa · 26/05/2018 23:42

I think Esmae is a really pretty spelling... People are really nasty on here cause they're behind the mask of the Internet.

Go with your heart! I think Esmae is a much much prettier and spelling and agree it helps with the pronunciation! Smile

Cosmoa · 26/05/2018 23:42

Doh! Old thread!

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2018 02:24

Esmae must be in school by now!

HeyDolly · 27/05/2018 06:27

This thread is more than 8 years old

mrsaxlerose · 30/05/2018 16:38

adore this name. shine was taken off it when twilight came out but still love it

12esmaes · 20/09/2018 11:01

My daughter's name is Esmae and has never once been asked to spell her name. It is a much easier name to pronounce (linguistically) than Esme - the name Esme sounds awkward - it has a smee sound which is not attractive - also it sounds like "heres me"

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/09/2018 12:01

I know yooneek spellings.aren't liked on here. However I'd personally spell it the way I wanted it pn (Esmay Esmae). For the simple reason in your defence I have heard it pn Ezzmeeee
which I think is horrible. Ezzzmay however is gorgeous.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/09/2018 12:03

Zombie ffs. Well I never woke it from its peaceful slumber

Sunflower321 · 20/09/2018 14:14

In English, Esmae works best, if you prefer that pronunciation.

Esmé might get mispronounced as Es-mee

Esme would always be Es-mee.

Unknownunknowns · 20/09/2018 17:00

When these zombie threads pop up, I always wonder what name the OP actually gave to the child 😊

RuthW · 20/09/2018 19:06

If you want it said Esmay then spell it how you said. Esme is said Esmee where I live, so it depends where you live how it is said.

RoomWithALoon · 21/09/2018 14:09

I know this is a zombie but I've been sucked in. It's interesting as there was a thread on here a few weeks ago where the consensus was indeed that (as a previous poster said):
Esmé might get mispronounced as Es-mee
Esme would always be Es-mee.

So I can see why the OP might be tempted by the weird spelling.

Sleepykate · 21/09/2018 14:34

Honestly? Esme used to be a pretty name but it's got SO common now and quite down-market. I also dislike all alternate spellings of it. Sorry

TheDowagerCuntess · 21/09/2018 21:01

I remember this thread from it's original 2010 outing.

Esme would always be Es-mee.

There was no consensus. Esme is only pronounced Es-mee by some people in the UK (for some reason).

Outside the UK, Esme is pronounced Es-may.

Sunflower321 · 21/09/2018 21:13

Outside the UK, Esme is pronounced Es-may.

No, only in France is Esmé pronounced Esmé (Es-may). The accent is pretty important actually!

Sessy19 · 21/09/2018 21:46

Esme was 42nd on the 2017 popularity list, and Esmae made it to 107....so I guess all you haters are battling the 500 odd mother’s who named their kid with a ‘unique’ spelling... awks

TheDowagerCuntess · 21/09/2018 23:12

No, only in France is Esmé pronounced Esmé (Es-may). The accent is pretty important actually!

Sorry, that's just not true. Confused I'm outside France, and Esme/Esmé (with or without the accent) is pronounced Es-may.

Esme (without the accent) in Twilight is pronounced Es-may, as it is in other English-speaking countries.

It really only seems to be in the UK, that people pronounce it Es-me.

sha85 · 16/12/2018 08:13

I cannot believe people on here! I know it was 8 years ago but it is shocking to find such rude and incorrect comments!

Claims that teachers would laugh at the name Esmae? This comment is unbelievable, the only thing the teacher would be thinking would be about the rude attitude of the poster and hoping that the poor child of said poster doesn't pick up the same attitude!

Esmae is a beautiful name! I hope the original poster used this and ignored the arrogant and rude people on here!

How ridiculous to say that it is chavvy! It is French name, spelt this way and in the U.K. We have turned it in to Esme and pronounced it esmee! So to all those saying they prefer it that way and Esmae is wrong. Actually you are wrong!!! And I personally cannot think of anything that I would think of as being more chavvy than to be so rude about names in this way!

Astronica · 16/12/2018 12:19

Esme is nice, and is pronounced 'may' as you want it. It would go very well with your other daughters' lovely names as well. (Lilian is my favourite spelling btw, as is the lovely Gemma). While my preferred spelling is Esme, I also think other spellings are fine - Esmee, Esmae, Esmay. I love a similar and related but much more unusual name Ismay. Ismay was a variation used in the middle ages.

RuthW · 16/12/2018 15:57

Esme is said Ez-me here. If you want it said Esmae then your spelling is correct.

foxtiger · 17/12/2018 14:29

I have known several Esmes who pronounce it with an ee sound so my instinct would be to pronounce it that way if it was written without the accent, but with an ay sound if it was written as Esmé(e).

I'm going to go against the flow here and say I don't think Esmae is an awful spelling, and it does make the pronunciation very clear. I knew a child once whose name was spelt Esmee (with no accent) and pronounced as Esmay - that seemed especially odd to me as the double e looked as if they wanted to emphasise that it was ee not ay, and they actually wanted the opposite!

tammytoby · 17/12/2018 15:02

Unless you know how to pronounce Esmé the correct French way, Es-mé, I would spell it so English speakers know which pronunciation you prefer:
Esmae - Es-mae
Esme - Es-mee
Esmé - Es-mé

foxtiger · 17/12/2018 21:48

tammytoby what's the difference between the first and third one for you? i'd say both of those with an "-ay" sound.
