What do you think of Esmae as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Gem, I'm so sorry - I must have got mixed up with another thread on here - unfortunately it doesn't take much to addle my elderly, knackered and depressed brain.

MamaLazarou · 26/03/2010 15:15

Oh good - that gives us 4 months to talk you out of it.

KAEKAE · 26/03/2010 19:43

Why are you lot all so bloody cruel on here?! Too much time on you're hands?

CinderellaRach · 26/03/2010 19:47

We wish

tiredfeet · 26/03/2010 20:28

gemcgem, when I first saw you post I wasn't too keen on the name, but actually its growing on me. I think esme is a bit more elegant looking, but then I like short names. However, I totally agree its nicer pronounced es-may thane es-meeee. Go with it, if you like it

KAEKAE · 26/03/2010 22:54

you're?! lmao.

queenofthehouse · 27/03/2010 09:13

I have only read a handful of the posts back to your message and I'm a little at some of them, 'I think you should learn to spell?' well I think you should learn some manners there is an opinion and blatant rudeness. I actually know an Esme and it is to her knowledge pronounced Ezmee at least that is what she has been called all her life and everyone I know has never had trouble with it. I must say I do prefer Esme but I don't dislike Esmae and also I generally find that whatever a childs name it usually grows on everyone as they build their character, my friends little boys name I could not stand but I must say I now think it's as cute as he is. I think a lot of people put too much importance on 'incorrect' spelling and I prefer some variations as they are not as common (which of course is usually the point of changing them.)

queenofthehouse · 27/03/2010 09:15

That was meant to be a sorry

CinderellaRach · 27/03/2010 12:32

KAEKAE'lmao'-class.

Esme is lovely.

Alishanty · 31/03/2010 15:14

We have an Esme and pronounce it Esmee, that is the only way i had heard it pronounced before we had her. We occasionally get 'Esmae' but it doesn't really bother us. People on here say it is getting popular but we still have raised eyebrows from family members who say it is unusual and think we made it up!

Lonnie · 31/03/2010 15:19

I dont care for the spelling either and your sister can just learn to say it the right way.

Having a name NO ONE can spell (Lonnie) i can PROMISE you it is a royal PITA to have to spell it constantly it is not just saying its Lonnie with an L I have to actually spell it then I get asked "whats it short for?" (err nothing what COULD it be short for??) then the next comment oh thats unusual isnt it a boys name? err no Im not a boy.. then finally how did your parents come up with that spelling then why the e? errr how the freak am I meant to know I didnt luck out on names ok??? (yes venting )

Esme I think is lovely Esmay no I dont like it sorry

mumofEandE · 17/04/2010 14:01

My Esme is pronounced Ez-may, but she is always called Ez-mee ...
There will always be people who will get it 'wrong' I know of an Esme in her 20s and she is Ez-mee so to her we are the 'wrong' ones!!

I am Emily - and this has been spelt in the past Emma-Leigh!!!!

Son Euan is often called Ian (and I thought this was a coomon enough name!)

laylamrc · 27/12/2015 11:03

Can everyone please go do some research!! Esme is clearing pronunced ES ME, it might be that we are from different parts of the world but Esmae would be a much better name here in Australia

JE1234 · 27/12/2015 11:14

It's a Zombie thread, I'm pretty sure the kid has a name by now, however it's spelt.

cecilelliott · 27/12/2015 14:49

Esme is a lovely name, but is becoming quite popular at the moment, if that is a problem for you.

fairguy99 · 15/10/2016 21:06

My grandaughter's name is Esmé. She cannot be called Es- me because there is the accent over the last 'e', so avoiding any confusion over pronounciation...Es-may. Okay?

KnateUSA · 28/02/2017 21:33

So I've named my baby Esmae with the intentions of nick naming her Mae. I relly think here in California EVERYONE would pronounce Esme wrong and Me for a nickname just seemed like asking for it. After reading this thread I have confirmed my lack of proper grammar, in the US we have ruined the English language and it drives me crazy. My dad is from Bristol and if he didn't come over on a boat at 2 years my grammar might be better.

TurquoiseDress · 01/03/2017 23:46

Go for Esme

The name is quite cute- could be short for Esmerelda?

But do not go with the spelling in the thread title- you and your daughter will spend an eternity correcting people and explaining how to spell it! Grin

TurquoiseDress · 01/03/2017 23:48

Ooh I always thought it was pronounced Es-ME Blush

I knew someone years ago called Esme and that is how she pronounced it

mainlywingingit · 01/03/2017 23:50

Edmae is chavfest. Esme is OK

IHeartKingThistle · 01/03/2017 23:52

Zombie thread!!!

Postchildrenpregranny · 02/03/2017 00:24

Why didn't you just call her Esmay?. My DD 1 has a fairly ordinary traditional name with a perfectly normal spelling. But there are at least 3 other perfectly legitimate ways of spelling her name so,guess what, she usually has to spell it for people..
And we gave her second (Welsh)name which very few people can spell corrrectly
