What do you think of Esmae as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

No - you're wrong wrong wrong! Es-may sounds much better. Esme sounds too much like "it's me" in a here I am everyone sort of way

PuppyMonkey · 20/03/2010 16:56

Esmay sounds like dismay.

CheerfulYank · 20/03/2010 16:57

Overthemill, I love For Esme with Love and Squalor!

Um, that's all I had to say.

LynetteScavo · 20/03/2010 17:57

I too love the way gemcgen and littlemissm have bonded on this thread. This could be the start of a long and happy friendship.

gemcgem · 20/03/2010 18:36

any one only bothered to read the last page , i don't care if you like esmae or not , what upset me an threw the hole thread out was people taking the mick out of my general grammar, an spelling !
I DO KNOW THE CORRECT SPELLING IS ESME /ESMEE !
i was seeing how may people would pronounce it me or may, an thought ESMAE would mean more people pronoucing MAY not ME !
in hindsight i probably should have put the question better !
an who cares who messages who ! childish!

The comments about you and littlemissm bonding were meant nicely, gem - you two have hit it off and that's a good thing, not a dig at you.

bellawilliams · 20/03/2010 19:33

My daughter is called Esme. Pronounced Es mee. A few people call her Es may (which is the French version). Esme is an old English name and so many people comment on what a lovely name it is. I'm really pleased with it.

littlemissm · 20/03/2010 20:25

Gem- Let it go i have been a mnetter for about 6 yrs now & i am more of a observer than a poster. I post when something really intertests me i do enjoy to read the threads more though.Even though i don't post very often over the 6 yrs i have never had a debate on spelling & txt speak it has been a learning kerb believe me.Just remember not eveyone is judgemental & not all mnetters will persercute. It was nice that we had our little alliance going on here gem but please don't let it wind you up any longer & rise above it.

LynetteScavo · 20/03/2010 20:32

Don't you mean learning curve?

littlemissm · 20/03/2010 20:36

Fine one to talk coming from someone who has had numerous spelling mistakes

JosephineClaire · 23/03/2010 16:39

I've seen the name spelt Esme, Esmae, Esmee and Esme with an accent. My mum is a teacher, and she has two of the variants in her class. Choose what you like, it's really only down to you...

And with 5 letters, Esmae will hardly take long to dictate if required, right?

whizzylala · 23/03/2010 18:55

I know two - one spelt Esmae who is always called Esmay and one spelt Esme who is usually called esmee but sometimes called esmae, also had a friend called esme when younger pronounced esmee.

othersideofchannel · 23/03/2010 20:40

It seems to me that by spelling the name ESMAE you'll never have anyone mispronounce the name (assuming you want it pronounced Es-may).

magbags · 23/03/2010 21:22

Esme is lovely, it was on my list for dc2. I do much prefer the classic spelling and would be a little bit at Esmae tbh.

tryingtoleave · 24/03/2010 06:41

As another poster said, I would pronounce Esmae as Es-my (I also did Latin at school). I think Esmay would be a safer spelling and less ugly too. Esme would still be the best.

Bumperlicious · 24/03/2010 09:03

Gosh, what a horrible thread. I'm always the first to defend mumsnetters, but with threads like this no wonder people call us bullies and bitches.

The first reply was 'I think you should learn to spell'. How rude. Yes the OP has not reacted well to honest answers to her question, but I'm sure she would have been less defensive had she not been attacked by bloody pendants who feel the need to 'educate' people.

This has really made me angry and feel sorry for the OP.

People need to accept that things like bulletin boards and chat rooms blur the line between written and spoken language, people may write or or type in the same manner in which they speak. So are you going to judge all people because of their accents and dialects too?

mcleanclan · 25/03/2010 15:06

Thinking of calling new arrival Esmae if girl (surprise), also thought same if spelt Esmae then pronounce May or will end up being called Ez-Mee.
In baby name book seems both spellings accepted as legitimate spellings. My name is Susannah therefore spent my life spelling out my name as again lots of ways to legitmately spell it. I think it is a lovely name, my only fear - it becoming too popular!

gemcgem · 25/03/2010 15:37

i hope its not to popular!?!? i don't know any , glad to see some else see's it from my point of view.

OP posts:
AllieW · 25/03/2010 19:51

Actually, if I saw Esmae I might be inclined to wonder if that was a legitimate spelling rather than to make a judgement on the poster, since it is more in keeping with "name conventions", IYSWIM.

And you have to be careful about mocking other people's spellings, too. An ex-colleague of mine was talking about Rebekah in very disaparaging terms and was shocked when I pointed out that not only was it a legitimate spelling, but it was probably more legitimate than the more common Rebecca.

FWIW, I have also only heard the Esmy pronunciation and I consider myself reasonably well educated and informed. I can understand why the op wishes to clarify things and since Mae is also pronounced May then I fail to see why the Latin scholars' views should prevail.

tryingtoleave · 26/03/2010 01:22

It doesn't have to prevail - I just meant that even Esmae was open to different pronounciations - that it wasn't foolproof.

MamaLazarou · 26/03/2010 09:24

gemcgem, it is rapidly increasing in popularity. I have met lots of baby Esmés recently.

MintyMoo · 26/03/2010 10:22

AllieW - My boyfriend made some disparaging remarks about Rebekah as a name too, something along the lines of 'why can't people learn to spell?' and was promptly informed that Rebekah is a valid spelling and is also older than the Rebecca spelling and got a shock. The moral of the story - before commenting on an 'unusual' spelling check that it isn't an older spelling, a recognised alternative spelling or the spelling from a different country i.e. Mark/Marc, Christina/Krystyna

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 26/03/2010 10:35

Any news yet of the arrival of baby Esmae? Wasn't gem to be induced yesterday?
