what do we think? it's the name of Wayne and Coleen Rooneys newly born son.
Not overkeen myself...

I went to school with a (quite middle-class) Kai, so it feels like just another name to me - certainly nothing ludicrous. I don't mind it at all.

I don't agree ErikaMaye - I love the baby names threads and admittedly though people often declare names common or whatever, if Kai was there from someone non celeb more people would like it I am sure.

People think of Wayne as more common these days but it is completely normal to give a child their parent's name as a middle name.

I'm all for sleb twaddle and think that a lot of these people set themselves up for this sort of thing but I really can't see anything that Coleen and Wayne have done wrong, except come from a working class background and do well for themselves. This thread is pretty mean and snobby. And for Kittywise:

I think that is a bit dramatic. Do want to put a copywrite on your child's name, and what really is wrong with being associated with them. What have they done that is so wrong?

I think Kai is a lovely (and normal) German/Scandanavian name. I?d also always thought of it as quite an unusual and cool/hippyish name in the UK. I hope my friend isn?t reading this.

Kitty, in the legends, King Arthur's stepbrother was called Kay, not Kai. Sorry but think you've made a mistake there. Not that it matters particularly.

I agree that there is awful snobbery being displayed in this thread. 'Chavtastic', 'working class' etc etc. I've heard a damn sight worse on MN and in RL.

Not keen on Kai - it doesn't sound 'finished' to me! But quite like Wayne.

Well we shall agree to disagree then For what its worth, in my original post I said I liked Kai but didn't like the combination.

(Also, said I wouldn't use it myself - that's simply because I am in total baby arrival mood now, so the name we have agreed on is the only name I can see myself possibly using )

I agree that continuing the Wayne thing over three generations is actually nice. Why shouldn't they??? That's their family name. And, their son, Wayne in the middle, was/is a big success in his field! so go ahead and celebrate that by calling Kai 'Kai Wayne'.

My son's middle name is my Dad's name, which a lot of people wince at, but it is better than another boy with the mn James. (or whatever fills the blank).

I still don't like Kai though. It reminds me of Burberry.

But Maggie, perhaps Patrick, Peter or Edward are perceived negatively in THEIR circle. And thats ok imo.

I really don't understand your comment. Even when parents divorce the father still remains the childs father so why ould the middle name be an issue exactly?

whatever is thougt of the name - Kai Wayne Rooney will be a very rich little boy.

Good luck to Colette & Wayne ,it is not going to be easy bringing the child up in the spotlight (not that I know anything about that ! .

The parents are happy , baby seems to be healthy - all is good.

Now I really don't like the name Edward, what circle does that make me in? It's not from any kind of class associations, I like poncey middle class names with the best of MN, and I have never known an Edward, it's just one of those names I don't like the sound of.

Hey I meant nothing disrespectful by saying it was a working class name. Kai is and calling the son after the father is also (now) a working class tradition. Sorry, but C&W are working class, does anyone disagree? Just as Arabella Olivia is a middle class name. That's very different to saying it's 'chavvy', which I would never do.

Wayne and Colette like the name Kai and that's ok. Why are we so arrogant and condescending towards their choice of name?

I wouldn't have chosen Kai, but neither would I have chosen Edward or Patrick!

Why can't we just accept their choice and focus on the happiness of them having a lovely new baby boy?
