What do you think of Nettle as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Bit silly

but I do like Lettuce as a name

preggersplayspop · 31/08/2009 14:42

Its a weed?

MrsMerryHenry · 31/08/2009 14:45

I prefer Thistle.

marinaq · 31/08/2009 14:47

I wasn't joking Dh and I both liked this one.
Can I really only expect this type of reaction?

SoWhat · 31/08/2009 14:48

Yes you can, sorry.

xxxxBAMBOOxxxx · 31/08/2009 14:49

awful. poor child

MrsMerryHenry · 31/08/2009 14:50

Marinaq: YES. Don't do it.

ninedragons · 31/08/2009 14:51

really, truly, diabolically awful.

FlightHattendant · 31/08/2009 14:54

I like it a lot before I thought of the inevitable stinging aspect

It's a veyr pretty name. There are sorts of nettle that don't sting and you can also make nice tea...so not all bad!

Look into the deeper origins of it etymologically if you want a quick comeback - not sure what you'll find but could be helpful!
Otherwise as suggested Lettice is beautiful, think it means happiness.

MmeLindt · 31/08/2009 14:54

Absolutely.

I thought it was a joke. Sorry.

FlightHattendant · 31/08/2009 14:54

Or use it as a nickname for something like Janette, iyswim

Tidey · 31/08/2009 14:56

Nettie you might be able to get away with. To nettle means to irritate though, I think it might be one nature name too far. I know of a little girl called Sage, bit different but rather sweet.

belgo · 31/08/2009 14:56

there are so many pretty plant names for girls, please don't choose Nettle.

morningpaper · 31/08/2009 14:57

No no no no no

FlightHattendant · 31/08/2009 14:57

Folklore

Also the hedge nettle doesn't sting, known as Stachys

Pielight · 31/08/2009 14:58

Yes, you could get away with Nettie, but it's not all that.

Sage
Bay
Lettice
Loveage

All better variations?

beanieb · 31/08/2009 14:59

I like it and as far as the 'poor child' comments go I think it's ridiculous to think something like this will cause any lasting damage to a child. You go for it if you like it. What's wrong with being unusual. it's hardly child abuse and why should you change your mind about something you like just because there are idiots in the worrld who might resort to bullying someone for their name!

nettle isn't a bad name, it's a lovely name.

FlightHattendant · 31/08/2009 14:59

I suspect origins are from 'net' ie something knotted, in the sense that the roots are rather knotted and form a net. Possibly. They are a bugger to dig up

belgo · 31/08/2009 15:00

Lettice and Lovage are far worse imo.
