What do you think of Nettle as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I also have a grandmother named Ivy and she is absolutely true to name

I like Thyme as a name. And Rosemary.

She climbs up walls and destroys the brickwork, Flight?

Oh I like Ivy.

And Iris.

I've never met anyone called Lettice or Loveage btw. Lettice is sweet, but a bit wet.

I wish Nettle could work, because it's a good word but the meaning is a bit obvious. Call your dd Nettle and your ds Irritant.

Do you think there are a lot of Dandelions out there? I bet there are. But they are probably boys

after living in the north east for a few years, Nettle sounds too much like netty (loo)

I don't like Lettice/Lettuce, Lovage, or Nettle.

I like it, but mainly from reading Robin Hobb books - we vaguely considered it for DD on the basis of considering a few hippy out there names but not seriously so. It is one of those names i fantasise about, if we lived in a small cottage in the middle of nowhere with a veg garden and animals and no school and no work and I did gardening and cooking and looking after my forester husband. But not in the real world.

Yes, we still like. Reeling a bit from negative reactions. We were thinking nickname Nettie
Thanks for the links FA.
Hmm, Lettice might be mistaken for Lettuce. I haven't come across Lovage before.

I call my neice nettle - her name's actually netta... I think its nice.... if you like the name and won't be embarrassed shouting at the top of your voice "Nettle time for tea" etc then I would go for it...

Works very well as a posting name, thank you!

Report
purepurple · 31/08/2009 15:09

nettie is a slang word for the bog, don't do it!

Report
Pielight · 31/08/2009 15:09

Oh Netta. I haven't heard that before, I like that.

You are working the loveage look beautifully I wonder whether it has an 'e' in it or not?

Poor kid having to grow up named Nettle (and not as a nickname)

nettling someone means annoying them

nettles sting

it's a cruel thing to do to a child you love because whilst a baby called nettle might be cute it will one day be going to school and then to secondary and walking in as a spotty, big teen going "hello my name's nettle" as everyone avoids laughing

I quite like Honeysuckle.

tis very weird to see someone with a similar posting name

Report
FlightHattendant · 31/08/2009 15:13

I was thinking more like poisonous, clinging, highly annoying and hard to get rid of.

Oh and she attracts wasps

"You go for it if you like it. What's wrong with being unusual. it's hardly child abuse and why should you change your mind about something you like just because there are idiots in the worrld who might resort to bullying someone for their name!"

Because it's not you that has to go to school, college, work, and retirement home with the name. You are naming another human being - if you like the name change your own name to it, but don't make decisions like this on behalf of another person who's not here yet.
