What do you think of Nettle as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Yup, Robin Hobb sprang to mind

moopymoo · 31/08/2009 18:42

my cats are called Nettle and Pippin. nice for them but not a child. (ditto holly, ben, max etc )

MaggieLeo · 31/08/2009 18:43

A nettle sting is not pleasant. Bay, Clover, Heather, lots of nice ones. Nettle is nasty.

MamaLazarou · 31/08/2009 20:11

It's shit.

Millarkie · 31/08/2009 20:25

I keep misreading the thread title as 'Nestle' so I would avoid it

hercules1 · 31/08/2009 20:25

After 35 years of a rather shitty name, please don't.

vanloadtovenice · 31/08/2009 20:28

It reminds me of Myrtle. Nearly choked when I first heard that, but like all of these 'now' names, they start to sound far more normal once you've heard them a couple of times.

Nettie is a very sweet shortening, too.

kmowell · 31/08/2009 20:32

Who are you? Gwynth Paltrow...??

wheniwishuponastar · 31/08/2009 20:45

i quite like the sound of the word 'nettle'. but i think the meaning and connotation is really important too. and the fact that a nettle is a weed is not a great connotation for a child. (unwanted, in the wrong place)
i read about a famous couple (can't remember who) who called their daughter dandelion and as soon as she could she changed it to angela.
i think its kind of a pretty sounding name, but the fact that it is a weed is really not good.

Rumpel · 31/08/2009 20:50

How about uticaria ?

nappyaddict · 31/08/2009 20:52

I like Nettie but not Nettle.

MaggieLeo · 31/08/2009 20:56

lol at are you Gwynnie!

gloomysue · 31/08/2009 21:05

I quite like it.

Thunderduck · 31/08/2009 21:09

I could say it's truly awful but that seems somehow inadequate. Please don't. It really is that bad.

ThingumyandBob · 31/08/2009 21:42

Hee hee, very funny, Nettle! Is your second name tea?

I always think of a few famous people and wonder how they would sound with the name I am contemplating....

Nettle Thatcher

Queen Nettle

Nettle Reagan

Nettle Beckham

Lady Nettle Parker Bowels

Nettle Kidman?..

I am being silly now, sorry. Still funny though.

Don't like Nettle, sorry.
My friend named her daughter Lettice, which I also think is a bit odd

wheniwishuponastar · 31/08/2009 22:09

cannot imagine a child called lettice!

Sidge · 31/08/2009 22:14

Nettle???!!!

Oh dear lord no. No. NO!

How about Briar?

If you really want to call a child Nettle at least call her Henrietta and use Nettle as a nickname.

lizmcfizz · 31/08/2009 23:28

Nettie is good Nettle is not. DO NOT NAME YOUR CHILD NETTLE, please!

Clary · 01/09/2009 00:13

Something like Willow or Rowan or yes, Briar would be better than Nettle.

It's just not a very nice plant and the word means "annoy" which isn't great. Also it doesn't sound nice at all. Please don't do it.

MarmadukeScarlet · 01/09/2009 00:19

DH and I considered it...

For our dog.

(We decided on Teasel)
