Aren't there enough girls with Grace and May and Rose as middle names?! Can we stop now?

A personal bug bear ...

Did I miss a law being passed that every family with a girl must use one of these as a middle name?

I mean they're pretty names, sure, but it's getting boring now!

Use your imagination people!!

When I was little all my mates had Louise as their middle name, these names are the Louise of the moment I reckon.

yikes i shall share your rant i got louise as a middle name (and a very well used first name to boot )

i like to use names that aren't used much at all..but then i'm the same with first names..see this is my therapy for being given a common birth name...lol

What percentage of 70's/80's born girls do you reckon have either Louise, Ann or Jane as their middle names ? Maybe the odd Marie in there as well

Rose, Grace and May are very pretty names though but do seem to be a bit of a default choice

I don't know, I suspect many children will be grateful they have such normal and ordinary middle names that other children cannot tease them about.
Both my sister and I are on the opposite side if the fence by the way and she always used to say her middle name was Anne, not Agnes which is what it was.

dd1 (nearly 8) has May as a middle name but in our defence it is dh's mum's name who passed away shortly before she was born.

agree they are pretty names tho

I am also sick to death of May/Mae as a middle name. It just seems like such a cop-out. It's as though people have spent so much time and effort thinking of a nice first name that when it comes to a middle name, they have run out of ideas, and just go along with the default.

But then it is very important for some people to fit in with the norm. There is nothing wrong with that - I am just not one of those people.

I am another 70s child with the middle name Louise. I hadn't realised it was so common - most other girls at school had Anne or Jane. I was named after a friend of my mum's.

I'm also a 70's child with the very common Jane as a middle name, my sisters is Ann. Don't see the point in middle names really, especially ones like the ones you are talking about, that are basically just fillers.

Agreed. Half the girls in DD's class havae May/Mae as a middle name. DD's middle name is Claire and we often get looks when people find out.

My middle name is Louise as well.

If either of the DS's had been girls then they would have had Rose as a middle name, after my lovely and greatly missed Great Grandmother.

when my new DD arrives she will be having rose as her middle name but because i really like it, DD1's middle name is Mary and my mother decided against a middle name and people think i'm strange for not having one, doctors always chop my first name in half to fit in

DD3 has Rose as her middle name.
DD2 has Leigh
DD1 has the classic Marie.

I was born in the late 70's. Most of the girls I grew up with had Marie, Louise or Jane as their middle names.

What an odd thing to rant about! They are MIDDLE names - not in every day use.

Incidentally,(bet you knew this was coming ), my middle name is Louise, and DD's middle name is Rose, both have been family names for a few generations - what an unimaginative lot we must be!

I thought it was a rule imposed by the registry service indicating you had to pick one of those three name. Don't know why but it has now made me take on an irrational loathing of all three of them even though they are all quite pretty.

I was born in the 70's and Ann is my middle name and my first name is even more characteristic of the decade (hides head in shame).

DD (23 months) middle name is Sophie.

I love the name Rose, I think it is much underused as a first name, and over used as a middle name.

MegSophandEmma - I'm trying to work out the combination of your dds' first and second names!

I am actually not really sure what the fark it matters what a childs middle name is anyway.
My DD has Rose as a middle name but only imediate family are aware and I suspect many of them have forgotten.Her Doctor, her dentist and the child benefit people know too - but I think that is it.
How do you actually know what any childs middle name is unless they were either born three minutes ago or you are a member of the family?
Do people really introduce their child as this is Sproglett missie Smith? Or are you talking about the recently popular and hideous silent hyphen - like this is Sarah Mae ?

I don't actually see the point of middle names at all unless it is to honour family members or say different parental nationalities/cultures. The child's first name should be good enough, as that is what he/she will be called. No real need for anything else, but then certainly not something that everyone else has - why bother if you are just using a name that everyone else uses? You might as well not give the child any middle name at all.

If we have a DD, she will have May as a middle name. But this is because it is a family name - Dh's nan who he was very close to and died just a few days before our DS was born. I hate the fact that people will think we have no imagination just because the other people who use May don't!

It's the same with boys - lots of James and Thomas and Edward as middle names.

So many beautiful names in the world, and so little imagination!

But how would you know if they were family names or not mrswoolf? Dd has Rose as her middle name because she was named after my nan. There were lots of Roses a similar age to my nan, so there could equally well be lots of babies being named after them.

Dd2's middle name is Grace. Don't personally know anybody else's child who shares it.

Dd1's middle name is Elizabeth - is that wild enough for you, eh?

ditto can't sleep. Twas my grandmothers middle name.
In two generations someone will be posting 'will you stop with all the Sophie/Mia/Sienna/Britany as middle names'
