Aren't there enough girls with Grace and May and Rose as middle names?! Can we stop now?

A personal bug bear ...

Did I miss a law being passed that every family with a girl must use one of these as a middle name?

I mean they're pretty names, sure, but it's getting boring now!

Use your imagination people!!

When I was little all my mates had Louise as their middle name, these names are the Louise of the moment I reckon.

Rant over. As you were

The reason some names are more common than others is because they're nice names, surely?

Why should people not use a name they really like, just because other people really like it?

Some people spend ages searching for a "cool, unusual name" for the sake of it being cool and unusual - fine, but have the courage to use a more "usual" name if you like it - it's a bit sad, isn't it, to bow to the "omg, you can't use Grace, May or Rose for your DD, there's thousands of them!" if you really like the name?

Or maybe we should start a campaign for Earwaxibetha to be the new top name?

MrsEricBana · 07/08/2009 18:48

In defence of Rose (yup, is dd middle name) it just seems to flow nicely as a second name to so many first names - India Rose, Lily Rose etc etc as well as being very pretty, timeless etc.

KembleTwins · 07/08/2009 18:56

My DDs middle names are Ophelia and Miranda. Wanted them as first names (am a bit of a Shakespeare fan) but DH wasn't keen so we compromised... Mine's Victoria. Always wanted it to be Louise though.

ipiratethief · 07/08/2009 19:04

dd's middle name is grace she is 7. it was taken from my fave singer's one and only album of the same name.

popsypearls · 07/08/2009 19:08

Oh no my middle name is Louise and dd's is May but am I excused as I named her after my mum, hope so!!

Hah i have a -Mae, -Rose, -Grace and a -Rae so i will go and prostrate myself upon the holy altar of baby naming and hope that the dd's eventually forgive me.

Coincidently my middle name is Louise, perhaps a lack of imagination runs in the family?

Mumcentreplus · 08/08/2009 00:23

DDs middle names = Honey & Kasey now thats wild!

BelleWatling · 08/08/2009 00:29

Ho ho @ 'middle name revealing ceremony'. However, it is fun finding out middle names (sad)...like looking at people's passport photos. I'm just nosy.

I like Jeff Buckley too ipiratethief.

Well my middle name is Grace but I was born in the 1970s...how special and fashion forward am I?

I don't mind people having 'normal' popular names - I think all the names mentioned are lovely but I do mind it when they are a bit at my DS' real yet rarely used name.

Mumcentreplus · 08/08/2009 00:30

I wanted a Rae but my friend nicked it she would never admit it!

Tidey · 08/08/2009 00:33

Aren't all middle names pretty much just filler though? Yes, the same ones are used over and over again, but it's because they sound nice. No-one NEEDS a middle name, but most people seem to have one.

Would you be happier if everyone used the middle name space only if they had a really original name to put there? It would still be the case that middle names are rarely used anyway, so what difference does it make?

mummygobrumbrum · 08/08/2009 02:13

The only positive? is that people will be able to pinpoint which decades these children were born in.
Middle names are used a lot in my exp and many people use their middle as a first name.
Yes they are one syllable names that go with everything. If one of 'em doesn't suit, another surely will.
They have lost their meaning and niceness by overuse. I vote they are banned as suggestions on this forum.
A middle name should have a significance, be it a family name or some other meaning. Otherwise they are just fillers and what's the point in that!
Shows lack of imagination. Yawn!

mummygobrumbrum · 08/08/2009 02:15

OP - Can I add two longer 'filler' bugbears?

Elizabeth
Charlotte

Grace
May/Mae/Mai
Rose

really nice, why not just slate everyone with those as middle names.

Sorry to be boring and all, but I love my DDs middle name and would prefer you don't just sweepingly rubbish them just because they are so pretty lots of people want to use them.

jemart · 08/08/2009 10:48

Alot of people use those names because of a family connection though, plenty of Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers were called Grace, May or Rose, very popular names of that generation! In my own family alone I have two May's and a Rose.

My dd has Rose for a middle name

jemart · 08/08/2009 10:52

Quite so Pavlov!

Quirky for the sake of it is over-rated.

K75 · 08/08/2009 18:40

Funny - 70s girl and myself and my sister have Ann and Jane. Fortunately, lots of good thought went into the first names!!

Am working on a name for DD2 - thanks for support for something that isn't "standard"

BitOfFun · 08/08/2009 18:50

I was going to use Louise for dd1"s middle name, after my best friend at school - didn't use a middle name at all in the end though. Dd2 is Roisin Maria, as a nod to my mum who is Rose Marie. I exempt myself from approbation on these grounds...

lena522 · 08/08/2009 18:55

My middle name is Louise and out of about 12 girls in the class 5 of us all had the middle name Louise.

I do think all of the names in the thread title are nice as middle names and 'go' with a lot of first names, and while maybe slightly unoriginal, I don't think there's any harm in using them because it's rare that anyone finds out your middle name.

Frasersmum123 · 08/08/2009 19:11

DD's middle name is Grace and I love it, I would much rather her have an ordinary pretty name that an ugly uncommon one.

Narketta · 08/08/2009 19:11

MegSophandEmma
I am also Clare Marie born 1974.

I have a DD with Mae as her middle name, We gave her that name in honour of my grandma who had Mae as her middle name. We think its lovely and couldn't care less what other people think!

FlightHattendant · 08/08/2009 19:20

I have a Rudyard and a Stephen

middle names btw

Not telling you first

I adore the name Rose as a first name (like Belgo said) but it's become a bit overused...Grace is lovely too.

AitchTwoOh · 08/08/2009 19:42

durrrr. the reason that they're so popular as middle names at the moment is that so many of us had grandmothers who were called those names.
