Baby names

Find baby name inspiration and advice on the Mumsnet Baby Names forum.

I give-up, after 9 months and hundreds of these threads, we settled on a name only for a close friend to call her baby the same thing.

She announced it yesterday.
The name was Nina.
My DD2 is due in 2 days. We have no names, it took ages to settle on Nina, and now I am so bored with name hunting.

Someone just tell me what to name her. Pretty please?

It should be classic but not boring and I tend to like short names.

NINA

call your baby want you want

i LOVE that name, so do you, so use it

no-one gets "dibs"

LulumamaLovesLatkes · 28/11/2008 19:16

so waht if it is the same name?

my friend and my DD had the same name, until i changed DDs.. but no-one was offended.

MatNanPlus · 28/11/2008 19:18

Agree, Nina let them think what they like.

I have found that no matter the name parents seem to give their child a family or nickname so in 6 months neither could be often referred to as Nina.

2point4kids · 28/11/2008 19:19

can you say to her 'congratulations but omg what a co-incidence we've picked the same name! what good taste we both have' etc etc and that way make it clear you're not copying her but that you're keeping the name you've chosen?

PeppermintPatty · 28/11/2008 19:20

Agree stick with Nina - its a lovely name

Blu · 28/11/2008 19:21

Nina
or
Nancy

CoolYourJets · 28/11/2008 19:23

Phoebe. Rachel. Mina maybe not!

MrsJamin · 28/11/2008 19:24

Nora? I love that name.

skidoodle · 28/11/2008 19:24

If a friend of mine gave her child the same name as I'd just given my baby I would be absolutely FURIOUS.

It's a horrible, selfish, weirdo thing to do. Seriously, don't do it.

One of the things I would consider in choosing a name is that the child wouldn't know anybody else close to them with that name. If someone close to me used the same name very soon afterwards I would think they were a nutbag.

Unless you are thinking of dropping this friend choose another name. There are enough names in the world for you to be able to come up with something other than Nina.

Heated · 28/11/2008 19:27

What a shame. If you really think Nina is no longer usable then off the top of my head these are some other not so used short girl's names

really skidoodle?

I would take it as a huge compliment and/or that we both had great taste in names

Plonker · 28/11/2008 19:29

I agree with skidoodle - really not a good idea to use the same name. Very unfortunate though, 'tis a lovely name.

How about:

Iris
Nancy
Leila
Harriet
Eloise
Cara
Maya

What is dd1's name?

I know it is a bit of an odd choice but I really like Elaine

I would think a furious friend a bit of a nutjob tbh.

I'd stick with Nina. Even close friends come and go, especially after kids. We almost used the same name as my closest lifelong friend (we've been friends since we were 1). I told her it was on the list and she was really keen for me to use it. I felt bad telling her we'd decided against it!

loler · 28/11/2008 19:33

Depends how much you see her. Nina is lovely and I would probably still want to use it but would chicken out! Talk to your friend, if she really is a good friend she would understand.

If not:
Lena,
Lana,
Clara (Clary)

Indith · 28/11/2008 19:39

Stick with it arti, if you think about it logically you are not going to avoid becoming friends with someone who has a dd of the same name in the future are you? It doesn't matter, if she is feels like she is a Nina when she is born then call her it, I'd never give my child a name that didn't feel right just because someone else had it
