Baby names

Find baby name inspiration and advice on the Mumsnet Baby Names forum.

I give-up, after 9 months and hundreds of these threads, we settled on a name only for a close friend to call her baby the same thing.

She announced it yesterday.
The name was Nina.
My DD2 is due in 2 days. We have no names, it took ages to settle on Nina, and now I am so bored with name hunting.

Someone just tell me what to name her. Pretty please?

It should be classic but not boring and I tend to like short names.

Misdee - we were thinking of Seren (without the "a". It is a Welsh name and a Turkish name which ties in with both our backgrounds. However, DH decided it was too "out-there".

I love Elsie. DH does not.

Oh my arti - Nina is the name DP & I had 90% settled on as well. I wonder if it's becoming popular. I think I'm due a couple of days before you - race you for it!

Seriously though, I don't know what I'd do in your situation - well actually I do. I wouldn't use it, but only because I'd prefer her to be able to be known by first name only rather than Nina X (DP, DS & I all have names like that). That's my only reservation about Nina actually (think I mentioned it on our antenatal thread) - that it's possibly not distinctive enough for her to "own" it. But that's beside the point in your case.

Good luck with whatever you choose ... it's a pain in the arse this choosing names lark, isn't it? I would suggest some more names but I'm pretty stuck for them myself!

skidoodle · 28/11/2008 22:08

Perdy? Is that a name?

In a Jilly Cooper book I once read there was a character called Perdita. She was spoilt and beautiful and rode polo ponies.

Seren is a gorgeous name. its nt out-there at all. i know a couple of little girls with that name. its not overly popular but not totally off the scale, like say, Dixie (my Serena's middle name)

sweetheart · 28/11/2008 22:09

I am seeing a personla trainer and she told me her dd is called perdy - I thought it was quite sweet for a little girl

Perdita is a character in Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale. We have a friend with a Perdita (Purdey). It means "lost one" which is a bit sad for my liking.

PoisonD - I can't beleive you are going for Nina too. I thought it was quite rare! Its lovely, go for it. I really, really wish I still could.

skidoodle · 28/11/2008 22:12

Seren is gorgeous.

Surely "too out there" can be overcome by the urgency of your looming deadline?

I mean it's not like it's the name of a politician he thinks ill of, is it?

Anway, even though I've never heard of it before it seems perfectly obvious how it should be pronounced and if you said it out loud I'm sure I'd guess the spelling.

It's not out there in a way that would make it burdensome.

sweetheart · 28/11/2008 22:13
