Baby names

Find baby name inspiration and advice on the Mumsnet Baby Names forum.

I give-up, after 9 months and hundreds of these threads, we settled on a name only for a close friend to call her baby the same thing.

She announced it yesterday.
The name was Nina.
My DD2 is due in 2 days. We have no names, it took ages to settle on Nina, and now I am so bored with name hunting.

Someone just tell me what to name her. Pretty please?

It should be classic but not boring and I tend to like short names.

I know a Seren - it means star doesn't it? - I agree it's a lovely name that doesn't sound made up and is very obvious to spell and say.

Thea is also very beautiful and more like Nina

Both go well with your dd1 name.

Have a few names and see how you feel after dd2 is born - I'm sure one will just feel right, particularly if there is a few that you like (and after dh will have to say yes to anything of your choice!)

misdee · 28/11/2008 22:19

sweretheart exactly. dh said it would be too odd seeing as we already have a dd named after a tennis player. and thats withour surname.

i did suggest venus. which amused us for 8months,.

skidoodle · 28/11/2008 22:20

OK Great Aunts:

Lizzie
Julia
Kay
Alice
Sally
Helena

poisondwarf · 28/11/2008 22:22

Yeah, it's somewhere in the hundreds in the most popular names list, but I still know a few in RL (no kids though so far). We aren't 100% set on it like you were mind - it's just the cream of the very poor crop that is our shortlist. If it's any consolation I realised the other night that it's the name of a very crap character in Corrie at the moment!

It's so hard to find names that tick all the boxes so I sympathise with you having put so much energy into it only to be faced with this dilemma.

sweetcat · 28/11/2008 22:25

I love Eden and would use it if we were going to have any more

poisondwarf · 28/11/2008 22:29

Do you like Stella at all? It was on our shortlist but a friend of DP's has bagsied it, even though she's due after us and knew it was on our list. I do like the name but it seems more suited to a woman than to a baby or girl somehow. And actually there might have been some other reason not to use it (maybe a children's TV character or something?).

thumbwitch · 28/11/2008 22:29

heh, what about Edina?

singingtree · 28/11/2008 22:30

Frances?

tkband3 · 28/11/2008 22:35

Edie
Eva
Ava

I do tend to go for short girls' names - all my 3 have 4 letter name. 2 are very common now, but I don't mind because I love the names and they suit my girls .

pooka · 28/11/2008 22:37

Go for SEREN! Definitely. A little girl in dd's class is called Seren and I think it is a lovely lovely name.

RipMacWinkle · 28/11/2008 22:38

poisondwarf - I loved Stella. DH said it just made him think of the beer which ruined it for me a bit

skidoodle · 28/11/2008 22:40

Stella is a beer's name these days I think

What about Binnie? Short for Belinda or something, no doubt.

LaDiDaDi · 28/11/2008 22:41

Seren is lovely, it wouldn't work with our surname, "-en and "-in" endings aren't great, but otherwise I would definitely consider it for a dd2.

BabyTalk13 · 28/11/2008 23:36

Think this suggestion is really cute....Philippa, shortened to Pip.
also like Saskia

Had a mate called felicity was nicknames flick for short, cute but bit weird.

What about Francesca(...or however its spelt, this one always confuses me!!) shortened to Frankie??

Madison....maddie for short.

Fionn?
Alissa?
Jesse?
Jamie?
Leigh(a)?
Charlene....charlie for short?
Zara?
Ellis?
Eva?
Kashka?
Goergie/Goergia?

Loved Elvie ....from some film where girl was nicknames LV (little voice) but i wasnt allowed it!

well thts all I can think of for now but will keep thinking.

Did like Nina, although the only two ninas I know are both my lesbian friends.

BabyTalk13 · 28/11/2008 23:38

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 28/11/2008 23:40

Eve

lillypie · 28/11/2008 23:42

What about Nita it's close to Nina

skidoodle · 28/11/2008 23:45

Flick or Flicka for Felicity is cool. Well I think so anyway. Your DH might be onto something there.

BabyTalk13 · 29/11/2008 00:07

Just realised I kept writing nicknames instead of nicknamed, thought my words were starting to go..... maybe I should go to bed soon!!!!

controlfreakyagain · 29/11/2008 00:20

poisondwarf · 29/11/2008 09:06

Stella ... beer ... of course. How could I have missed that? [slaps forehead]

Has anybody texted that number!? I mean, do they take any information FROM you before they charge you £2 to suggest Emily/Hyacinth to you??

camgirl · 29/11/2008 16:30

Stick with Nina if you love it. They can always be differentiated by surname Nina X and Nina Y.

Other thoughts:
Noa
Sonia
Lea
Mira
Anya
Naomi
Ava
Mila

uptomyeyes · 29/11/2008 20:29

Artichokes - can I just make sure that Perdita from about 15 posts ago is absolutely scotched - I'm sure that Perdita was the bitch that gave birth to 101 dalmations....

How about Isla?
