I have a VERY unusual name. In fact its so unusual that if I told you and you googled it the only thing that would come up would be my Facebook profile (I tried it......so as I may need to post incognito one day I can't tell you.

Anyway despite not being paricularly thrilled with my name when I was a teenager, I love it now and would love to name forthcoming DC's with something unusual.

What are the most unusual names you have heard of for both sexes???

My DS has an unusual name - Ivan. Most Ivan's are over 50

I bumped into a girl I used to work with recently. When we worked together she had 1 DD, now she has 4 - they are:

Yumi
Esme - not unusual I grant you.
Leeloo
Nola

CoteDAzur · 17/11/2008 21:32

Boffinmum - I'm guessing 'Bircan' you taught was Turkish. It's pronounced "Beer-john".

CoteDAzur · 17/11/2008 21:37

Not sure about "Lelani" being the name of a famous prostitute, but "Lalena" is a Deep Purple song about a prostitute.

superfrenchie1 · 17/11/2008 21:56

Think Leilani is a page 3 girl?

dd and ds know so many kids with unusual names... the most unusual one i've heard in ages is...

...Bob! For a 4-year-old. So cute!

ds was nearly Iggy. dd was nearly Dot.

Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream named his boys Wolf and Lux.

thederkinsdame · 17/11/2008 22:38

Boy: Napoleon (shortened to Nappy.)

Someone in hospital nearly called their child Buzby. All i could think of was the BT ads of the 80s.

oopsacoconut · 18/11/2008 09:51

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/11/2008 10:08

TheLadyEvenstar · 18/11/2008 10:15

I know a
Miracle (boy)
Duran (boy)
Heavenly (girl)
Morenike (girl pronounced Mor-e-ni-kay)
And then there is me...

Vaunda-Mae....which is Polish and means Wonderful-Mae, Mae being my dads mum who died when he was 13

scattercushion · 18/11/2008 10:19

Amber-Lynn. Not that unusual at first glance, but say it out loud and you get one of Henry VIII's wives.

scattercushion · 18/11/2008 10:21

come on AliBean, Vaunda-Mae has fessed up, what's your name? Give us a clue.

hoppybird · 18/11/2008 10:24

Boy's name - Thor.

Who told you your name is Polish, TheLadyEvenstar? There's no 'V' in Polish except for in use in foreign words. There is a Polish name which is very similar - Wanda (pronounced 'van-da'), who was a lengendary Queen of Poland

and Toe-Knee (Tony)

Girls - Roibois (Roy-Boss)
Lovingly - Kiarnia

angelene · 18/11/2008 10:55

I know a Che who is around 30.

Best I heard was the primary school class that had two girls called.......Unique!

thell · 18/11/2008 11:20

Ha ha ! Two Uniques !! That's fabulous!!

My friend's daughter has a friend called Trilby (girl) - named after the character which inspired the hat, not the other way round

I once taught a boy called Dante, which is quite nice.
Friend's daughter has Lamorna as a middle name after the Cornish town.
Another middle name - Rapunzel. Seems pretty normal after hearing Abbernacker!

oatcake · 18/11/2008 14:42

midwife colleague told me of a postnatal visit she did recently where she overhead the mum saying to the student something about not wanting it nicked.

apparently they were talking about the baby's name - Nevaeh - heaven spelt backwards....

hoppybird · 18/11/2008 16:35

LadyEvenStar - Ah, I guess it must be in dialect then, as it's a new one on me - you can never account for how they spell and pronounce things up in the mountains or suchlike: (I was brought up speaking Polish - both parents are Poles).
