Would probably give him a nickname of Finney

American Pie, sorry!

HotTiredDog · 26/10/2025 22:04

Not a fan - Range Rover OverFinch; Gold / Green / chaff / haw finch - etc etc. Sorry.

NannyR · 26/10/2025 22:06

Bird or surname.

TenGreatFatSquirrels · 26/10/2025 22:07

I just don’t see why you’d call them that and then give them a nickname that’s longer than their name…

The word ‘finny’ also means relating to or resembling a fish. According to the Oxford Dictionary. In French it means ‘finished’.

NormaNormalPants · 26/10/2025 22:08

To kill a mockingbird would be the first thing that springs to mind.

Tiebiter · 26/10/2025 22:09

Also American pie!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 26/10/2025 22:09

I knew a horse called Finch.
So it's a no from me.

EmmaOvary · 26/10/2025 22:10

I love it. I know an adult Finch.

Christ0nABike · 26/10/2025 22:10

I can only think of David Brent’s bestie

Finney is even worse than Finch.

ilovepixie · 26/10/2025 22:11

For a budgie it’s great! For a human child, not so great.

Lilacbluewaters · 26/10/2025 22:12

maddiemookins16mum · 26/10/2025 22:11

Finney is even worse than Finch.

Oh I think Finney is nice, even just as a first name instead of a nickname tbh

Exactly and said in that voice to!

Needmorelego · 26/10/2025 22:14

Finn is generally considered a normal regular name these days.
Name him Finn and you can call him Finney.
Finch is a bit odd as a first name.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/10/2025 22:15

Pretty little birds
Not a good boy's name

Howtoaccept · 26/10/2025 22:17

My first instinct would be that it was s surname and to think of To Kill a mockingbird

NameChangeForThisQuestionOnly · 26/10/2025 22:17

I like Finch, it’s sweet and uncommon. Generally I like all of the bird names as names/nature names. But Finney? No, awful. It’s too similar to Fanny! Just call him Fin for short.

Atticus is a much better name op.

Makingpeace · 26/10/2025 22:19

norrispiastri · 26/10/2025 22:03

American Pie, sorry!

Definitely this. Definitely not a name I would use!

Also, Finney sounds like a nickname for Finnegan. Perhaps consider that name instead?

ninjahamster · 26/10/2025 22:20

I thought of Atticus Finch straight away.
To me it is a surname. I’m not a fan of Finney.

Finn or Finlay is nice though.

Ikeameatballs · 26/10/2025 22:20

Awful. Really do not like it.

HolyMerlot · 26/10/2025 22:21

It would have been one of my top boy names (big To Kill A Mockingbird fan!) but I was put off by it inevitably getting shortened to ‘Fin’. Soooooooooo many babies named Fin/Finley in my area over the last few months and years. I feel as though there must be three or four per school class in my town alone!

Buxusmortus · 26/10/2025 22:21

Lovely name for a bird, stupid name for a human.
Finney is even worse.

Don't subject your son to it, he won't thank you.

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 26/10/2025 22:22

American Pie here too.

Thedogscollar · 26/10/2025 22:25

Neither sound good.
