Would probably give him a nickname of Finney

person of interest stop GIF

My first thought was this guy. But yeah, American Pie was my next one.

Firebird83 · 26/10/2025 23:30

Makes me think of pinch. Or Filch the caretaker from Harry Potter (DS has been watching the films on repeat 😅). Finn is much nicer.

Tiredofbullsit · 26/10/2025 23:36

Fine if you will call their sibling Tit, Crow or Thrush!

Ruthietuthie · 26/10/2025 23:50

Sounds mean, like pinch. Just no.
Why not Finn?

TwinklyStork · 26/10/2025 23:52

No, it’s awful. It’s a surname. I hate this American trend of using surnames as Christian names. McKenzie, Carlton, etc. Horrible.

GoodVibesOnly21 · 27/10/2025 00:00

Knew 2 brothers with the last name finch. They were both known as finchy. They were both wankers, thought one slightly less wankerish than the other.

its a no from me

FlamingoFloss · 27/10/2025 00:02

Just no. Finn is lovely (and you could call him Finn-ey if you wanted?

TBF it was a historic UK practice as well - Sidney/ Percy/ Leslie were all surnames turned christian names.

But Finch - no.

Squirrelsnut · 27/10/2025 00:19

No.
Finlo?
I know a Wren.

HugoYorway · 27/10/2025 08:30

Both are OK as surnames. Awful otherwise.

No5ChalksRoad · 27/10/2025 08:34

Please, no. Why would you want to saddle a man with “Finny” or “Finch”? Can you envision that in actual use for a teen or adult?

”Hi, I’m your barrister, Finch Smythe.”
”Officer Finch Higgins here..”
”Hello, I’m your child’s teacher, Finny.”

Kids will turn finny into fanny before he’s 10, too.

bridgetreilly · 28/10/2025 16:00

Don’t be silly.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/10/2025 16:47

Named Atticus with Finch as a nn could be an idea? Finney is just awful, even if Albert Finney was a wonderful actor..

This is a really good point. Children and adults are brutal!

Oh I think Finney is nice, even just as a first name instead of a nickname tbh

What if Finney grows up and is fat?

Will he be Fatty Finney or Finney Fat?

AllPlayedOut · 28/10/2025 16:50

It sounds like a hard boiled ‘70’s TV detective. A definite no imo.

Gruffporcupine · 28/10/2025 16:51

Extremely American. Not my favorite but I don't dislike it.

Fox could be an alternative? I wanted to call DS that but DH hated it lol

BigGirlBoxers · 28/10/2025 16:52

ilovepixie · 26/10/2025 22:11

For a budgie it’s great! For a human child, not so great.

Calling a budgie Finch would be weird. It would be like calling a finch Budgie.

Agree that it is a very bad name for a human.

BigGirlBoxers · 28/10/2025 16:57

If the bird thing is important to you, go with Robin. Or perhaps Cormorant, as in Strike.

EDIT: Ah, just realised he isn't called Cormorant Strike. I did wonder why you would want to name a fictional private investigator after an ugly water bird.

FrauPaige · 28/10/2025 17:02

One of the most wonderful things about returning to the UK after working in America is that the people you interface with here actually have first and last names as opposed to two surnames.

RaraRachael · 28/10/2025 17:03

Nk to Finch and a bigger no to Finney - too close to Fanny 😄

Flixon · 28/10/2025 17:05

Absolutely not, unless you want your kid to be bullied and heckled over his name.

Calliopespa · 28/10/2025 17:14

Actually as far as "have to be different" names go, I don't think Finch is the worst.

I'd still go for Henry or Alexander or something myself, but if someone else chose Finch I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Finney is getting a bit more problematic.

Calliopespa · 28/10/2025 17:15

-though it sounds a bit like the Grinch's brother.

MorningFresh · 28/10/2025 17:17

What about Vincent, nn Vinny? It's a proper, top drawer name.

Better than Finney.
