Hello all!
Looking for a middle name for Agnes and was wondering what the general public thinks of these:

Agnes Elsa
Agnes Elsie
Agnes Essie
Agnes Élise / Elise
Agnes Elyse
Agnes Elvira

As you can see from the poll I have a thing for names that start with an E 😜

Other names we like are:

Agnes Iris
Agnes Lovisa
Agnes Vilhelmina

Or can you think of names that you think we would like...

TY!😍

I’m a teacher and Nancy, Betty, Margot, Mabel etc all featuring heavily now. I think Agnes is nicer than all of those. I like Agnes Elizabeth.

I agree, it's the best of a dodgy lot, and they very much back in vogue.

JillyGiraffe · 27/09/2025 00:35

I wouldn’t choose anything with an ‘s’. I feel like I need to pause slightly between Agnes and Essie. I voted Elvira.

Thanks all for your different opinions 😉
Some of you had some great new suggestions on middle names, unfortunately we are already decided on Agnes so that won't change 😂

But it stands between:
Agnes Elise
Agnes Elyse
Agnes Lovisa
Agnes Anne
Agnes Anna
Agnes Sofia/ Sophia

I like Eliza, but I like Elise more.
I also like Vilhelmina, but it's just a bit long...

I might make a new poll between Elise, Lovisa, Anne and Sofia...💕

Agnes Elise is the beat of the bunch, followed by Agnes Lovisa and Agnes Anna.

The S in Agnes and the S in Sofia run into each other.

Most of the Agnes' I've known (all now dearly departed) had the nn Senga.

Not a name I would choose but all the names I associate with dead Grannies are back in fashion.

TheChristieAffair · 27/09/2025 02:29

Agnes Jean
Agnes Marie
Agnes June
Agnes Wren

DD (year9) has 2 friends called Agnes and 1 Agatha (known as Aggie). It seems to be having a bit of a moment in S Yorks at least!

15 years ago we were all a bit 🤔 about Mabel and Elsie. My vote goes to Agnes Elsie.

Taggys · 27/09/2025 13:50

New poll if you don't mind 😂😆: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/baby_names/5417965-new-agnes

None of them sorry. My aunt was called Agnes and always got called Aggie, she really hated it.

TinaTotal · 27/09/2025 20:07

Like a lot of others I came to say Agnes Elizabeth 👍

SazKaka · 27/09/2025 20:08

Sorry but Elvira sounds like a shampoo 🙊

Louoby · 27/09/2025 20:09

Agnes is just awful! Any other names on the table? I think your daughter will hate you for choosing that name.

Emmz1510 · 27/09/2025 20:10

I don’t like any of these as I think together with Agnes they are all too much of a mouthful. I feel it should be either a one syllable middle name or three plus. No idea why, just seems to trip off the tongue better!
ie
Agnes Jane
Agnes Victoria
Agnes Elizabeth
Agnes Aurora
Agnes Grace
Agnes Jennifer
Agnes Jessica

NormallyAwkward · 27/09/2025 20:16

I dunno why but Agnes Maeve popped into my head.

Undercookedby10 · 27/09/2025 20:19

Love Agnes! Agnes Elise from the E names.

But I do love, Agnes Olivia ❤️

HamAlive · 27/09/2025 20:35

What's the difference between Élise, Elise and Elyse?

Just the spelling 🙈

I have to agree with some of the other posters it's such a harsh name to inflict on a baby, and never mind a child at school.
I apologise if your wanting to use it, if your naming her after a beloved relative. But please think about using it as a middle name instead, I've worked in schools and kids can be so cruel. It doesn't even shorten to a prettier sounding name either. Some old fashioned names need to stay in the past. And this is one of them.

My Nan was Agnes Gwendoline
I love the name Agnes

Cheeky19863 · 27/09/2025 22:07

Of all the beautiful names to choose from you choose Agnes? Why? Its awful

DangerousAlchemy · 27/09/2025 22:48

I'm not a fan of Agnes at all. If you like old fashioned names how about:
Audrey
Margot
Iris
Rosemary
Bridget
Ada
Dorothy
Harriet
Flora
Caroline
Ivy
Violet
even Agatha is better than Agnes imo

My great grandma was Agnes Elenor (she didn’t care for the name and went by Ellie). We names our daughter Ellie (after her), as Agnes is awful if you aren’t 85!

OhYeahOhYeah · 27/09/2025 23:43

Eek it is such a harsh, ugly first name

I would pick almost anything else over Agnes, sorry….

mezlou84 · 28/09/2025 04:51

Agnes Elise is the best of those combinations in my opinion. Agnes Erin or Agnes Elizabeth are better with Elizabeth preferred. However your baby, your choice and she will grow into her name. Congratulations

Agnes Eliza

I like this one :) Agnes has grown on me over the past few years, and will see them well over a lifetime. I think people forget that they are only a baby for a short time, and that they will one day be an old lady!

Thebrink · 28/09/2025 09:11

My Grandmother was Agnes Jemima.
