Hey!
Making a new poll here about Agnes' middle name as we've narrowed it down...

(Yes, we have Nordic family hence the Scandi names 😂)

Which one works best??

I love Lovisa and Agnes so my choice is Agnes Lovisa

Emanwenym · 27/09/2025 14:01

Are you based in the UK, and how are you pronouncing Agnes, Lovisa and Elvira?

Agnes - AGG-ness or ANG-ess?
Lovisa - Lov-EES-a or LOV-issa?
Elvira - Elv-EYE-ra or El-VEER-a?
Sophia - Sof-EYE-A or Sof-EE-a?

(hope my approximations are remotely 'nordic')

Plastictreees · 27/09/2025 14:01

I think Agnes Elise flows the best. I like Sophia but both names run into each other.

dybb · 27/09/2025 14:07

Agnes Lovisa is beautiful

Apart from Sophia, I think those are all really horrid names (including Agnes). Sorry.

Thanks, @Taggys .

That makes a difference. I think I'd pick Lovisa.
You probably won't get the Swedish pronunciations in the UK.

SkaneTos · 27/09/2025 16:36

Great names!

I voted for Agnes Elvira.

(I'm from Sweden too, you can see from where if you look at my username.)

MumChp · 27/09/2025 16:38

Sophia

Or Victoria it might not be Swedish but the next Queen of Sweden is Victoria.

PrincessOfPreschool · 27/09/2025 16:42

Lovisa is a cheapy earring/ accesory shop. That's the only place I've ever seen the name!

LEMM99 · 27/09/2025 20:12

Agnes Elvira sounds lovely. Does it blend well with your surname without giving you away, does it flow?

Alot of people saying in your previous post about hating it. I love it and old fashioned names or unique names. It's nicer to have that than something trending and then having ten children look up when you call out your child's name 🤣 They're all beautiful names.

I've always loved Evangeline but probably a bit too long after Agnes! X

Deneke · 27/09/2025 20:29

I don't understand your pronunciation update. In England Agnes is pronounced Agg-ness with Aggie for short. No-one would think of pronouncing it any other way unless they are French in which case they'd say Ann-yess which is actually much nicer.
If you don't want her to be called Agg-ness then she'll spend her life correcting everyone's pronunciation.
Please don't use Elvira as it's a shampoo brand name.

Taggys · 27/09/2025 20:35

I have only learned about the Lovisa jewellery shop today 🙈
Does that ruin the name? It's an old Swedish classic name that has been worn by the royals.

@Deneke, the parents are Swedish. They'll be using the Swedish pronunciation. Why is that so difficult to understand?

What's the Elvira shampoo? Did you mean Elvive?

Ronathediva13 · 28/09/2025 13:49

Poor kid. She’ll need a middle name that she can use as going through life called Agnes is not the one.

But it's a recognised name here with a different pronunciation.

My German friend has a Silas and Linus which rhyme in English but don't in German - but here they are pronounced the English way. Another friend has a Matthias (Matt-ee-as) but which is constantly 'mispronounced' (Math-eye-as) by teachers, which he never uses. He tries to go by Matt!

Emanwenym · 29/09/2025 09:54

@PrincessOfPreschool , People would cope. Lucia has different pronunciations, as do many other names. As long as you are prepared to overlook the occasional local pronunciation, it's fine.

PrincessOfPreschool · 29/09/2025 17:07

It's not about people coping. It's about the child constantly having name mispronounced. It gets annoying! My name seems to confuse people too, but I'm sure they don't care at all. It is irritating for me though!

Emanwenym · 29/09/2025 17:34

@PrincessOfPreschool , I agree with you about it being annoying, but if it's a known name in this country, I think you can either accept that it will happen or choose a different name.
If you need to correct people, you need to be aware that people don't like being corrected, and some won't use your version.
