Hello all!
Looking for a middle name for Agnes and was wondering what the general public thinks of these:

Agnes Elsa
Agnes Elsie
Agnes Essie
Agnes Élise / Elise
Agnes Elyse
Agnes Elvira

As you can see from the poll I have a thing for names that start with an E 😜

Other names we like are:

Agnes Iris
Agnes Lovisa
Agnes Vilhelmina

Or can you think of names that you think we would like...

TY!😍

Agnes is very pretty and not common.

I like Agnes Jane, Agnes Mary and Agnes Elizabeth.

Edited

I like these three two , as well as your E suggestions: I voted Elise because i think Agnes calls for something very soft and pretty to contrast.

Agnes is a truly awful name. Please don't make your child be called this.

Fatiguedwithlife · 25/09/2025 18:07

My relative was called Agnes Leontine. She was a countess ☺️

Fatiguedwithlife · 25/09/2025 18:08

@CitizenZno it’s not… especially NN Aggie is cute

Krakinou · 25/09/2025 18:18

I’m surprised at all the hate for Agnes. I think it’s lovely. I agree with the poster above about having a 4 syllable middle name - it has a better rhythm than 2-2.

I voted Elise of your names. I prefer it to the others anyway, but also if you do go with a 2-syllable surname, it sounds better where the the emphasis is different:
AGnes eLISE rather than AGnes ELsa

Have you got any other ideas to help with suggestions, like a theme or something?

midlifemover21 · 25/09/2025 18:22

That was brave OP you should know that Agnes doesn’t meet the narrow- minded mumsnet standard on here. Once you step outside the UK shores and look back in you see what a weird attitude people have about names. Aside from the fact you didn’t actually ask anyone’s opinion the actual name. Just raise your daughter to have a more open and positive attitude than ridiculous and vitriolic pp of the women on here and she will be good!

All the names sound lovely. I’m not sure if there is a scandi heritage there so that may sway your middle name but Agnes Elise goes well.

Best of luck with beautiful Agnes and no doubt will rock the world when she arrives.

NameChangeForThisQuestionOnly · 25/09/2025 18:22

People can be so rude! The OP has not asked for opinions on Agnes. If you don’t like the name you can just move on, no need for nastiness. Life would be so boring if we all like the same things.

Personally, I think Agnes is really pretty. I love it’s meaning too.

From your list OP I like:
Agnes Elyse
Agnes Elvira
Agnes Lovisa

I would also suggest,
Agnes Elsinore
Agnes Eleonora
Agnes Ellora
Agnes Elva

I think it might be an age thing. To me Agnes says someone in their 80s , each to their own. I think it is hideous

I don’t like it either but these type of names are coming back in fashion e.g Enid, Ethal, Maud…

Totally agree the rhythm thing as described in this post.

I think Agnes Elise works.

BashfulClam · 25/09/2025 18:30

Oh dear god that’s a hideous name. I know 2 Agnes’ and they hate their name, one has adopted her middle name instead. My Sil wanted to call my niece Agnes and it caused frictions as my brother said over his dead body was his daughter going to be known as ‘Aggie’. Thankfully she came to her senses and didn’t saddle to poor child with it.

Flippertyfloppertyflip · 25/09/2025 18:36

Keep your rude opinions to yourself. I happen to love the name Agnes, it’s very pretty.

If you can’t find something nice to say, shut the fuck up.

Yes I agree, op has only asked for opinions on the second name.

I don't actually find Agnes as bad as many of the others on the "old lady revival bag" such as Maud, Nancy. Ethel or Margot. But people are liking them.

PistachioTiramisu · 25/09/2025 18:41

Eliana
Francesca
Eynor
Elspeth

Perhaps you should take your own advice and stfu as telling people to do so certainly isn’t saying something nice. This is a baby name forum. If someone asks for opinions on any aspect of a name then they’re going to get them and your opinion that it’s a lovely name is no more valid(and no less valid) than the opinion of the posters who like me, dislike it.

I do agree with the posters who said that the French pronunciation is much nicer.

Chickoletta · 25/09/2025 18:41

I like Agnes - it was on our list for DD. Lots of them here in Cornwall after St Agnes. I would go for a middle name starting with a consonant though - don’t think yours flow well.

We were thinking of Agnes Lowenna (a Cornish name).
Alternatively - Rose, Charlotte, Jennifer, Lucy, Louisa, Jasmine, Clara

Yes. They are from my grandmother ‘s era. Ie would be over 100 now. Guess not the same connotation for younger people.

Jamesblonde2 · 25/09/2025 18:48

Agnes Genevieve
Agnes Miriel
Agnes Elodie

Sofiatheworst · 25/09/2025 19:10

I immediately though Agnes Olivia

Its quite pretty but also quite a lot of soft palate vowels.

heartsinvisiblefury · 25/09/2025 19:15

Agnes is a beautiful name!

heartsinvisiblefury · 25/09/2025 19:16

I immediately thought Agnes Elizabeth

KuanKaKu · 25/09/2025 19:19

The only name that goes well with Agnes or dare I say it Aggie is Rose, Agnes Rose and I think you'd need to speak the full name...to avoid Aggie

LaurelBush · 25/09/2025 19:21

I voted for "It doesn't matter".

Does anyone ever use, or know, your middle name OP?

Calliopespa · 25/09/2025 19:27

heartsinvisiblefury · 25/09/2025 19:16

I like that.
