Girl name - Navy

Is the girl name ‘Navy’ just a bit nuts?

When I first heard it I thought it was ridiculous, but now I kind of like it. The thought of shouting ‘Navy’ across the park is a bit silly though isn’t it?

What's its cultural origin? I've never heard it before.

MagnificentBastard · 06/08/2025 18:29

I know of an extremely chavvy family (dad’s in prison) who have named their daughter Navy. Poor kid.

BeatriceAndBeau · 06/08/2025 18:29

Pregnancy hormones! I love the colour Navy but it’s absolutely not a name for a child.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 06/08/2025 18:30

Hmmmm I hadn’t heard it before, initial response was ‘whhhaaatttttt?!’ But it’s definitely growing on me.

HappySummerDays · 06/08/2025 18:30

Hunter Biden has a daughter called Navy.

oh come on, it has to be American surely.

I wouldn’t have thought a name needed a cultural origin, does it?

OP, I don’t really like it but it’s certainly not the most ‘out there’ name I’ve heard, so if you do like it, go for it!

HappySummerDays · 06/08/2025 18:31

I know kids called Grey or Gray.
Lots of girls are called Violet.

VeryQuaintIrene · 06/08/2025 18:32

Sorry, but it makes me think of Village People's gay anthem "In the Navy." Bad idea, IMO.

erinaceus · 06/08/2025 18:33

I feel like people would sing that song “In the Navy” (I think it’s Village People) at her and think they were original and funny when actually it was sexual harassment. And lots of similar jokes around this phrase, “I hear Fred was in the Navy” etc.

Halfquarterbag · 06/08/2025 18:33

It’s not much better than Air Force, to be honest.

Snorlaxo · 06/08/2025 18:34

I heard that an American influencer went for it but spelt it something like NayVee to make it look for feminine.

The name Violet is usually after the flower isn't it?

Navy is pretty bad, i guess the middle name could be Blue.

1diamondearing · 06/08/2025 18:35

I love it!

ladyamy · 06/08/2025 18:36

Yes

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/08/2025 18:36

I’m not keen sorry.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 06/08/2025 18:38

Weirdly really like it.

And Indigo. And Blue.

I’ve never heard it as a name but think it would be fine (and easy to pronounce)

😀

Around here it tends to be used as an intensifier for ‘getting frustrated’ eg ‘I was navy blue in the face from trying to get my teenager out of bed.’

A name doesn't need one, but if it meant 'beautiful' in some language I don't know (just as an example), that would affect my opinion of it.

Radiowaawaa · 06/08/2025 18:45

I like it. It’s not something that I would usually like. There’s an influencer with lots of children (some adopted) and I’m sure that one is called Navy.

BunnyLake · 06/08/2025 18:58

I wouldn’t want to be called Navy so I wouldn’t call a girl Navy. Just because some colours work as names doesn’t mean they all do.

Puppydogtail · 06/08/2025 18:59

That’s flipping awful for a child’s name.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 06/08/2025 19:00

Middle name Lark

TubeScreamer · 06/08/2025 19:00

Don’t do it!

plenty of other colour names if that’s your thing - Iris, Violet much better
