Girl name - Navy

Is the girl name ‘Navy’ just a bit nuts?

When I first heard it I thought it was ridiculous, but now I kind of like it. The thought of shouting ‘Navy’ across the park is a bit silly though isn’t it?

Sister of Army and Air Force? She would she be asked this stupid question so many times.

I wear a lot of navy, but it is a bit of a safe boring colour, which makes it even worse for a name.

It’s quite popular in America at the minute. I don’t mind it really. I don’t think it’s that out there either

What's its cultural origin? I've never heard it before.

No cultural origin at all. It's just people picking a random word and using it as a name.

Such as Paltrow and Martin calling their daughter Apple.

FreebieWallopFridge · 06/08/2025 19:02

No. Dreadful.

PennyAnnLane · 06/08/2025 19:09

In the USA it’s probably fine, in the UK I think it would be a bit unfortunate.

Sorry, but it makes me think of Village People's gay anthem "In the Navy." Bad idea, IMO.

I doubt their generation would even know what that was.

questionthethought · 06/08/2025 19:12

I normally don’t like these sorts of names but this one I really like!

I know kids called Grey or Gray.
Lots of girls are called Violet.

"Violet" is a name with a very long history of use - it was very popular in the 1920s and is derived from the flower.

The word "navy" comes from Old French "navie" meaning a "fleet of ships". "Navy blue" was the colour of British Royal Navy uniforms in the 18th century.

I like it. Cute

mamagogo1 · 06/08/2025 19:15

Only if their brother was called army. Unlike other colours it’s the name of a branch of the military, no just no

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/08/2025 19:41

Bit outing but my niece is called Navy. Not a chavvy family and not American. I wasn’t sure when I first heard it but I like it now and it suits her.

youalright · 06/08/2025 19:45

What about yellow?

MarmaladeSandwichUnderMyHat · 06/08/2025 19:50

I love it for a girl and boy name!

smileymylie25 · 06/08/2025 19:55

I know a little girl called lilac. What’s with the colour names lol

CorrectionCentre · 06/08/2025 19:57

Most colour names either stand alone in meaning i.e. it's a colour name only like Blue. Or if there's a dual meaning, the non colour meaning is something likeable too, like Violet (flower) or Coral (sea creature colony) . Navy as a shade of blue is associated with a branch of the armed forces. It's not just a coincidence, it literally gets its name from the royal navy. Great if you are descended from Horatio Nelson but to coin a phrase - it doesn't float my boat.

Sidebeforeself · 06/08/2025 19:59

Someone is going to come on here and say “ there’s three in DDs class”!

I think it’s more a boys name but I don’t know why

Fordian · 06/08/2025 20:10

What’s wrong with Sarah?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/08/2025 20:12

@hoohaal

'The thought of shouting ‘Navy’ across the park is a bit silly though isn’t it?'

Probably beter than shouting 'Police' across the park?

Elizabeth1000 · 06/08/2025 20:14

Names need to function - use Nadine or Natalie if you want to nickname her Navy

goudacheese · 06/08/2025 20:19

Could you use Naeve, nn Navy?

youalright · 06/08/2025 20:23

What about Nova

Twelftytwo · 06/08/2025 20:24

Ugh it's not even a pretty sounding word!
Would you name them "army"

And whilst I love wearing a bit of navy it's not exactly a "pretty" colour

cramptramp · 06/08/2025 20:30

Omg. Please do not do this to a child.
