Good evening!

Opinions on the name Piper?
I am not sure on a middle name or anything as of yet but I’ve recently come across the name piper and I really like it.

What’s everyone’s brutally honest opinions on the name?

Love it!

My Piper hasn't ever been called Pie. I just asked her and it's only ever Piper or occasionally Pipes.

Ditto!

Bluelavenders · 20/03/2025 13:47

I don’t like it at all.

Shortens to Pipe or Pie?

I’ve just looked at the England and wales name statistics and the name has been in fairly regular use since the year 2000 but really peaked in 2014 which surprises me.

Has anybody ever met a Piper IRL?

I know a couple, now aged between 40-45 (gen X). Isn’t Gillian Anderson’s daughter also called Piper? I quite like it - it’s unusual but not too much so. Sweet for a small girl I think but not too cutesy when she’s older.

Gemini29 · 20/03/2025 14:14

@Airwaterfire it is!

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 20/03/2025 14:18

I knew a Piper years ago in the US. She had siblings Lyon and Sloan so I think she had the best deal.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 20/03/2025 14:22

Love it - pretty without being cutesy…

I also love Harper…

Bababear987 · 20/03/2025 14:50

How are there not more people who have heard of this name from charmed?

Anyway I think it's really cute and different. Its not necessarily one that would beat out all the other girl names out there but I think it works fab from baby to elderly lady.

Bababear987 · 20/03/2025 14:57

Also I think theres a lot more variety and unusual names about these days so I really dont think piper will stand out or be bullied that much. Given it might have been more of an issue when every other child was called rachel or Susan but now people branch out a bit more.

mathanxiety · 20/03/2025 15:19

Bolscassis · 18/03/2025 21:22

no. She’s going to get bullied. Pied piper chasing rats and all that.

This is silly.

I know one Piper (in US). I think it's similar to Harper, Hadley, Tatum, etc, and while not the style of name I used for my DCs, it's nice. I think it's actually nicer than most surnamey names for girls.

Charmed hit UK screens in 1999 so the new babies from 2000 makes sense.

I see you queried Piper Alpha: Piper is an area of the North Sea and the oil rig Piper Alpha suffered a catastrophic failure which killed many men in the late 80s.
For my generation Piper conjures the girl from Charmed, Pipers piping in the 12 days of Christmas, Pied Piper of Hamlyn and the Piper Alpha disaster.
Meh, we’re all old and these things won’t be considered by her classmates. It’s still a pretty name.

Beachs · 22/03/2025 05:10

I know 2 Pipers but I struggle with the name because one pronounces it Piper (Pipe-r) and the other Pippa (Pip-er) so now I’m never sure which pronunciation to use.

Rivertrudge · 22/03/2025 05:48

Awful. Sounds very American. Poor child would have a terrible time every year when people sing "The Twelve Days of Christmas".

Cctviswatchingme001 · 22/03/2025 05:50

My cat is called Piper.

A 5-year-old in my family was taught Twelve Days of Christmas at school last year and sang interminably about pipers piping for about 2 months.

Alpha.

I'm going to hell for this.

RainBow725 · 22/03/2025 10:02

I really like it but I am also a big fan of Charmed (the original) 😁

AuxArmesCitoyens · 22/03/2025 12:49

Not a name that crosses the channel well, pipe being slang for a BJ

DuchessOfNarcissex · 22/03/2025 16:26

Elle lui fait une pipe

Spare a thought for all the unfortunate Marys out there, and the Glorias, Belles, Hollys, and Ivys, all having an excruciating time at Christmas.

SoOxon · 22/03/2025 16:34

Piper Comanche, Piper Cherokee, look to the skies

Oceangrey · 23/03/2025 22:24

I really dislike it but am not sure why.

It’s my cat’s name. She is gorgeous - it’s only my cat’s name because I’m not having more kids. I think it’s a great girls name.

We have a feline Piper too.

Named after a character on neighbour who was very feisty and a bit of a role model for my then 13yo daughter!

I love it! I've actually known a few Pipers, I don't think it's as unusual as others seem to think!
