Good evening!

Opinions on the name Piper?
I am not sure on a middle name or anything as of yet but I’ve recently come across the name piper and I really like it.

What’s everyone’s brutally honest opinions on the name?

I have a really strong aversion to it - and I've no idea why.

Dontsparethehorses · 19/03/2025 01:34

I know a baby Piper

I consider it quite American, it's nice though.

Piper was always my favourite witch :)

Not at all

Mamofboys5972 · 19/03/2025 01:46

Not sure on Piper, I do love a not very common P name though. Poppy, Penelope or Pheobe. Super cute!

ThisFluentBiscuit · 19/03/2025 02:12

I'm not personally a fan of names that sound like surnames, but if you like it, go for it! I've heard worse. Whether the baby is a boy or girl, they could shorten it to Pip, which is quite sweet.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 19/03/2025 02:16

Eyerollexpert · 18/03/2025 21:16

What about Pippa? I do love Piper though and Pip and Kip.

Pippa's usually short for Philippa, though.

OP, if you like Piper but aren't completely sure, what about Philippa to be known as Pippa? It's almost the same as Piper, but if she's Philippa she has options. Pip, Pippa, Philippa if she ends up a High Court judge! It's a pretty flexible name, come to think of it.

Onlyvisiting · 19/03/2025 02:58

It's OK? Feels very american to me, I've never met one, just come across it in American fiction books

It's a name I'd be vaguely surprised to hear the first time but would soon get used to it. I don't think its so wildly out there as to cause massive controversy or be a problem for her in later life.
I do think it sounds nice! And I'd be fine with pip as a shortening myself.

Sorry OP but I really don't like it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/03/2025 07:01

It's a lovely name i know a girl with that name.Better than some of the definitely made up names you hear.

BumbleBeegu · 19/03/2025 07:15

Makes me remember my obsession with Charmed…and I love it because of this. 🥰

SemperIdem · 19/03/2025 09:21

There’s a (female) Piper in my extended family. I think it’s a cute name. Not one I would personally use but nice nevertheless.

Woofle · 18/03/2025 21:15

Sounds like “pipe her” unfortunately so I think during teen years may be made fun of

This! Sorry OP

Roselilly36 · 19/03/2025 10:18

Makes me think of the Piper Alpha disaster too. I don’t dislike it, but wouldn’t be a name I would choose tbh.

sel2223 · 19/03/2025 11:02

I like it but then I was a Charmed fan.

I also know a 7 year old Piper IRL

EdithStourton · 19/03/2025 11:12

Light aircraft.
Or a bloke in a kilt skirling away on the bagpipes.

JollyGreenSnake · 19/03/2025 11:15

DazzyRascale · 18/03/2025 21:11

I know two dogs called Piper. No children.

I also know a cute pup named Piper!

suah · 19/03/2025 11:20

I don’t really understand it as a name to be honest. Do you desperately want to give the message to the world that you hope your child grows up to play the pipes? It’s just a bit weird, and yes very American sounding.

Ddakji · 19/03/2025 11:21

I quite like it even though it reminds me of Piper Laurie who played the psycho mum in Carrie.

RabbitsRock · 19/03/2025 11:22

It’s the name of Belle King’s dog in Emmerdale & I immediately thought of that

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 19/03/2025 11:22

Either a bloke who is followed by rats or a disaster in the north sea.

IsaacNeutron · 19/03/2025 11:23

Orange is the new black. Lots of lesbian sex, knicker selling, not a very likeable woman.
That’s what springs to mind when I hear Piper.

OurSis · 19/03/2025 11:46

It’s very perky, cheerleader like Harper, Taylor etc.
It doesn’t feel like a grown up name.

I don’t know WHY I find this so funny but I can’t stop laughing at it…

I am Scottish as well. It IS a bit like calling your beautiful baby Trumbonist.

Bolscassis · 18/03/2025 21:22

no. She’s going to get bullied. Pied piper chasing rats and all that.

I have a 10 year old Piper. She's never once had this comment.

also has never been nicknamed 'Pips'.
