Good evening!

Opinions on the name Piper?
I am not sure on a middle name or anything as of yet but I’ve recently come across the name piper and I really like it.

What’s everyone’s brutally honest opinions on the name?

OP posts:

if you asked my mum, she'd probably say that nobody has made fun of my name and everyone used my full name. @Sal17690 .

Love the name Piper! As for middle names I've always loved Piper Lily

DurdleSnore · 19/03/2025 21:20

Another Charmed fan here. Love it but I think that’s because I do associate it with the character. I think it’s on the same vein as Harper.

RuthW · 19/03/2025 22:02

Dreadful. Sorry.

ODFOx · 19/03/2025 22:11

It is a very pretty sounding name but to my (very traditional) ears it has a very mid-states American vibe.

if your baby is British have you considered Pippa (from Philippa, like Pip from Philip) ? Similar sound and light/unstuffy feeling to my ears.

Either way: very pretty.

WhamFantastic · 19/03/2025 22:23

Not at all to my taste, but then we are all different!
I do know one who is American.
I can only really say it in my head in an American drawl and always followed by Alpha.
Weird for a British child I think.

I don’t really understand it as a name to be honest. Do you desperately want to give the message to the world that you hope your child grows up to play the pipes? It’s just a bit weird, and yes very American sounding.

This is how I feel as well. Same with Harper or Mason or any other occupational surname. There are so many actual first names to choose from why pick a surname?

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/03/2025 22:50

I like traditional names like Ellizabeth and Matthew so I don't like it but it doesn't matter what I think. OP, it's your opinion that matters.

I have a Piper.

Everyone who asks her name says they love it.

She gets Pipes, Pipey or Pipsqueak usually.

If you have another child, you could call them Pianist! Pianist and Piper would make a cute pairing!

I have met a few little girl Piper’s and they always suited their name very well but I still cannot imagine a corporate woman named Piper!

Could change it to Pippa, in those circs!

iseethembloom · 19/03/2025 23:00

No. Too trendy / modern / fashionable…. Like Harper.

sunshineandshowers40 · 19/03/2025 23:07

Tell that to Harper Lee and Piper Laurie.

In fairness, their real names were Nelle and Rosetta.

TENSsion · 20/03/2025 07:37

I don’t like it but you probably wouldn’t like my children’s names. There is no real reason to not call her Piper.
If you love it, go for it.

Bluelavenders · 20/03/2025 08:29

Piper? As in a person who smokes a pipe? That’s such an odd name, and not very feminine.

I have a Piper. She’s never been called “pip”

the name suits her and I still think it’s gorgeous. Never regretted it. I know an adult piper too. She loves her name

Limth · 20/03/2025 08:44

Sounds like a potato

Yes, I was trying to work out why I hate it so much, and you've nailed it.

Temporaryname158 · 20/03/2025 09:35

Not a nice name, Piper Alfa and pied piper are the first things coming to mind and neither are nice

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/03/2025 10:30

First thing that occurs to me is Piper Laurie. I’m quite old, though 🤣

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/03/2025 10:34

Is it not going to be perennially shortened to Pie?

I mean you can try to create all the 'nicknames' in the world (which aren't nick names at all, but just shortenings), like Pip and Pippy, but all her friends are going to shorten it by the sound.

Which is Pie.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/03/2025 10:40

Quote like Pie, too.

My Piper hasn't ever been called Pie. I just asked her and it's only ever Piper or occasionally Pipes.
