Fiachra - thoughts?

I'm Irish and live in Ireland.

I found out I am having a boy 🤗I already have a Pádraig, we are looking for something else Irish, and preferably not super popular. I've posted before, I have a massive family so a lot of names have been used already

What are thoughts on Fiachra? Non Irish people, would you have any idea how to say it?

Not seeing the teeth tbh
Unless you habitually say R as L?

Susie snail???
What happened to Síle Seilide (Sheila Snail in English)?

I remember her as Susie Snail, tbf it’s a long time ago 😂

Am I the only Irish person who associates the name with Fiachra frog from Bosco? I wouldn’t use any name that ends in “a” for a boy, it sounds too feminine.

That leaves out about half the Irish boys names.

@Hopingtobe4 I really like Oisín but there are a a few in the creche/ play group we go to

Fiachra seems to be getting split opinions. We had a very positive yes when I asked on here about Pádraig

Yeah, really popular atm. How about Daithi or Eoghan? I feel like they go with Padraig?

I've never come across it, and wouldn't know how to pronounce it but Viagra would definately be my first thought. Seems an odd choice of name given that it sounds or looks so similar to a libido medication.

To you it may, but to me your comment and point of view are frankly bizarre.

Most Irish people will know the name as one of the Children of Lir which is a legend from the Irish oral tradition going back God knows how long.

It's unexpected for us because the name Fiachra is so familiar. But over here in South East England I hear people trip up over all sorts of names, and it is useful to know what memorable words they are going to land on instead.
I love Ferchar and Feradach, are either of those any use OP?

mushypeas94 · 09/04/2024 15:55

I don't get the Viagra reference at all. Is that something to do with the English accent? Wouldn't be a problem in Ireland.

Zonder · 09/04/2024 15:57

Lovely name. People manage to learn to pronounce all kinds of names they're not used to if they make a little effort. Go for it.

pontipinemum · 09/04/2024 16:18

@TwirlBar I had never made the connection before and any Irish person I've mentioned it to hasn't either. It's so similar but I don't like Fiachna.

I loved Ruairí when I was pregnant with DS but I had a few people say Rory so that put me off.

DH has a 1st cousin with a Pádraig and same surname. He also had a Peadar, I love the name Peadar, but I really don't think we can use it. We live in a very rural area, we didn't know the cousin had a Pádraig and it would have been fine anyway but I think it'd be weird to call our 2nd son the same name as their 2nd son!

I also like Pierce but then thought of calling Pádraig, Pierce across a field and thought better of it!

I like it, but it has always reminded me of fiacla (teeth) as well.

Oh, me too - I can't see it any other way (so I don't like it).

pontipinemum · 09/04/2024 16:21

@Hopingtobe4 I really like Daithí but the only one I know is an absolute dose so it puts me off.

Alsonification · 09/04/2024 16:29

I'm Irish living in Ireland & I also always think Fiacla when I hear Fiachra.

I love Oisín, Liam & Sean. Also like Eoghan.

Justhereforaibu1 · 09/04/2024 16:40

Yep, teeth was my first thought

Cuppachuchu · 09/04/2024 16:43

I thought firecracker. Sorry. 😣

effoffwind · 09/04/2024 17:06

I love it 👋🏻

Namerchanger1 · 09/04/2024 11:40

This isn’t right is it - fia-cra rhymes with viagra!

its more fay-cra

lovely name

No, it's FEE-ah-crah (emphasis on the first syllable).

It doesn't rhyme with viagra and it's not fay-cra.

That IA in Irish is always pronounced as two separate vowel sounds - it's always EE-ah.

LapinR0se · 09/04/2024 17:38

Fee- schwa - cra

For those who know what sound schwa makes...

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/04/2024 17:57

I would have said Fee - Kuh or Fye -Kuh at first glance. But that’s easily corrected. I’m not a huge fan of the name personally.

featheryfancy · 09/04/2024 17:58

I apologise but I’m another that read it like siracha but with an f

Joolsin · 09/04/2024 18:01

I do like Ferdia, as another suggestion. Or Conall.

harrietm87 · 09/04/2024 18:16

I love Fiachra and am (northern) Irish so I know how to pronounce it, though I do think Ferdia edges it for me.

Abhannmor · 09/04/2024 18:20

featheryfancy · 09/04/2024 17:58

That would make sense if it was spelled Fia- racha. But it isn't.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 09/04/2024 19:18

this thread has reminded me that all the viagra in the world is made in Ringaskiddy.

SnowFrogJelly · 09/04/2024 19:25

Noooooo

AwfulTed · 09/04/2024 19:53

Love it! NI here, and only know of one, none of primary school age …also love Malachy which goes nicely with Pàdraig
