Long name for Cuddy

We're expecting our second baby and I am really keen on Cuddy as a name, which is usually a nickname for Cuthbert. We live in Northumberland so it has connection to St Cuthbert. But my husband isn't keen on Cuthbert, but only likes Cuddy if it's a nickname for something else. Any suggestions for what the birth name could be if we shorten to Cuddy?

Wasn't there a (female) character in House (the one with Hugh Laurie) called Cuddy?

As Cuddy is often a nickname for a left-hander, you could always 'think outside the box' (like an old clue on 321!) and name him Dexter, meaning right-handed?! I'm not going to suggest naming him Sinister... !

Alternatively, you could always call him Kurt, known informally as Kuddy/Cuddy.

It was her surname; Lisa cuddy

Gcsunnyside23 · 25/01/2024 10:33

Just a note, I'm from N.I and cuddy here is a very common slang word for a girl, as in "tell that cuddy to go home", tell that girl to go home

RowanMayfair · 25/01/2024 10:33

Cuddy??? Why???????

Westfacing · 25/01/2024 10:36

Cuddlenugget?

I am a bit baffled by the responses on this.
Everyone going No! horrible name!

It is not a common nn, but it doesn't seem to have an alternative unpleasant meaning and it really is not that different to a dozen similar names many of which are really popular like:
Eddy
Cody
Teddy
Andy
Dougie

and so on.

I don't think Cuthbert is a great name, it sounds a bit Little Lord Fautnleroy, but it is not an obvious long name for Cuddy.
Pretty much any C name would do.
Cameron
Caden
Camden
Caleb
Charles
Callum

and so on.
My favourite would be Cameron /Cuddy which seems for some reaosn to fit

ActDottie · 25/01/2024 10:42

No don’t do it to your child!

meemawww · 25/01/2024 10:43

Cuddles? 😂😂
I'm sorry but Cuddy is awful

Morethantimeandmorethanlove · 25/01/2024 10:47

Please don’t use it . It means horse/ donkey in some parts of Scotland and it’s also used by rappers to mean snogging or even sex.

KirstenBlest · 25/01/2024 10:49

Cuthwyn
Cuddington
Cuddlebunny
Cuddlemonster

RoseMarigoldViolet · 25/01/2024 10:51

It makes me think of a cow chewing their cud. Not a nice association.

FancyJapflack · 25/01/2024 10:54

Awful. Just dreadful but if you want to call him Cuddy just call him Cuddy. I don’t understand the obsession with pretending that the name you gave your child is a nickname. It’s like you’re saying “Oh no we wouldn’t have ACTUALLY called him Cuddy! It’s just a nickname that stuck haha!”

You don’t get people saying “We want to call our baby Paul - what could Paul be a nickname for?”

RedDoughnut · 25/01/2024 10:55

Do you watch House OP?

Lisa Cuddy was a character on there. Never understood how she ran a hospital. She seemed really dopey.

Anyway, on the off chance this is genuine.
Cuddy is awful. Cows chew cud.

And Cuthbert is now a caterpillar cake.

KirstenBlest · 25/01/2024 10:55

Cuddyabeloved?

AHFaemale · 25/01/2024 10:57

AceofPentacles · 25/01/2024 10:57

Cuddles?

Please don't do this to your son who will be full grown man one day .

NancyPickford · 25/01/2024 10:59

Cuddy is a horse or donkey where I come from. Plus it sounds horrible as a name for a child.

spicedlemonpie · 25/01/2024 11:01

Id re-think on that name cuddy named after cuthbert NO just no.
Poor child will be bullied for life.

Nicelynicelyjohnson · 25/01/2024 11:04

Have you read Cuddy by Benjamin Myers? It's a retelling of the story of St Cuthbert.
He's a terrific author, not sure my comment helps with your naming dilemma though!

It means horse in NE England too 😂

ihavespoken · 25/01/2024 11:07

Although @catscatscurrantscurrants idea of Caedmon is a brilliant one if you are really set on the idea
