Long name for Cuddy

We're expecting our second baby and I am really keen on Cuddy as a name, which is usually a nickname for Cuthbert. We live in Northumberland so it has connection to St Cuthbert. But my husband isn't keen on Cuthbert, but only likes Cuddy if it's a nickname for something else. Any suggestions for what the birth name could be if we shorten to Cuddy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Macgillicuddy of the Reeks is a fabulous Irish clan chief name. But a bit long to name a baby.
I quite like Cuthbert . My late mother knew amonk called Brother Hubert. Hubert known as Hube has a certain cool vibe.
Cully and Sully is a brand of soup in Ireland.

Go for (almost) any other if the Northumbrian saints (I would stay away from Willibrord and Willehad) but
Aidan
Benedict
Edwin
Egbert (Bert/Bertie)
Oswald
Wilfred are all fairly standard names

Acca
Balin (bit of a Lord of the Rings vibe)
Bede
Caedmon
Cedd
Ceolfrith
Haedde are more 'out there' but at least they don't have the donkey/ chewing/ sex meanings that Cuddy had.

I just said it out loud and it sounds like I'm saying 'cunty' with a cold.

eggandonion · 25/01/2024 17:17

I like Caedmon.

Notice the OP hasn't come back.
Hopefully went to a bookshop to buy a baby name book 😂

I share the love of St Cuthbert but I’m afraid I also think of this chap.

Cuddy isn’t great. Cruddy, Cuddly etc.

Just buy a pet budgie. Cuddy will suit him.
For a boy who will one day be a man you are being ridiculous 🙄

MirandaBlu · 27/01/2024 08:39

There's also the famous Swiss scientist, Cuthbert Calculus ...

Cuddy! Are you sure, it's not a nice nickname at all.

DoggusDomesticus · 27/01/2024 10:07

I must be getting old. I can never tell whether the OP on baby name threads are genuine or taking the piss any more.

What is it with these God awful names on MN? Whatever happened to sensible names, like Emily or James?

I want to know why everyone wants to name their child and then give them a 'nickname' when they mean 'short form' or 'known as'. Nicknames grow organically, you can't 'give' a child a nickname. You can, however, have a name that differs from their actual name, that is their 'known as' name.

Cuddy-Bob!
