Long name for Cuddy

We're expecting our second baby and I am really keen on Cuddy as a name, which is usually a nickname for Cuthbert. We live in Northumberland so it has connection to St Cuthbert. But my husband isn't keen on Cuthbert, but only likes Cuddy if it's a nickname for something else. Any suggestions for what the birth name could be if we shorten to Cuddy?

I mean, there's a rapper called kid cudi.

If you are set on it, maybe change the spelling and just use Cudi

Kirkcudbright

Thats a place, not a name. Might just as well call the poor kid Auchtermuchty or Echelfechan .

Olika · 25/01/2024 11:12

Please don't.

Cody is a not-uncommon name - and would probably sound quite similar to Cuddy in a Geordie/NE accent.

Cody is a great idea. Koby is nice too.

Sorry I’m another one not keen on cuddy.

There is a Scottish surname of "McGillicuddy", but have never heard Cuddy as a first name. It does seem a bit unfair for the child.

If you want him to sound like a children's 'entertainer' that you wouldn't let your children within 100 miles of!

That's the vibe I was going for Grin

Although @catscatscurrantscurrants idea of Caedmon is a brilliant one if you are really set on the idea

Thirded. It's a great name and I've never met one (not an alive one, at least). I did know a Bede once though!

Funderthighs · 25/01/2024 11:18

Cuddy is the Geordie word for a donkey. Just don’t!

CrushingOnRubies · 25/01/2024 11:22

It's the nm for a particularly spiky/ unfriendly cat called Mr Cuddles. Please don't call your DS buddy

Kirkcudbright

The "cud" in Kirkcudbright is a "Coo" not a Cud though!
You can't call a child Cuddy whether it's a nickname or not!
What about Cody?

TallulahBetty · 25/01/2024 11:44

Balonz?

Seriously, do not do this

Needmorelego · 25/01/2024 11:49

It's not really a name.
It just sounds like something that would have evolved through time as a family name.
18 Year Old : "Why do you all call me Cuddy?"
Parents: "Oh when you were a toddler you always wanted cuddles but couldn't say it properly and constantly called out I want Cuddy"
I call my daughter Moo Moo.
It's not on her birth certificate and isn't short for anything unless you count "My Little Miss Moo Moo" 😂

sensationalsally · 25/01/2024 12:03

Cuddy is a horse. Cundy is a drain.

Silvergreenblue · 25/01/2024 12:06

Reminds me of cruddy

LakeTiticaca · 25/01/2024 12:07

What's with parents wanting to saddle their poor offspring with ridiculous names that will be a lifelong piss taking magnet?
What's wrong with Daniel or James, or even Henry or Charles?
Plenty of nice boys and girls names around!

UrsulaBelle · 25/01/2024 12:09

Cullen is the best (or least bad) option mentioned. Cullen Daniel, David, Dominic, maybe?

Mairzydotes · 25/01/2024 12:11

It makes me think of Cuddy's cave - another North East connection. So by that logic I'd suggest Cave as a name.

Flatulence · 25/01/2024 12:11

Cuddy.
No.
Just no.

Differentstarts · 25/01/2024 12:12

I mean if you really must can you have cuddy as the middle name and then give him a normal first name so that you can call him cuddy but then when he's older he can choose which he prefers

CactusMactus · 25/01/2024 12:14

Cuddy? Really?

What cows eat..old cowy chewing the cuddy.

RaraRachael · 25/01/2024 12:15

Cuddy? LOL I hope you never live in my area as that's what we call a horse! 😅

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/01/2024 12:16

I'm struggling with the Mn obsession of 'setting' nicknames. Surely a nickname is a name that arises organically because of behaviour/appearance/inability to pronounce etc?

You can call your child Cuddy regardless of their first name. My youngest daughter is called Libby, which bears absolutely NO relevance to her first name (but only by me and occasionally one of her sisters. The others use a more obvious short form of her name).
