I knew a girl called Frances-Anne, which I think sounds lovely. Martha is nice too.

My middle name is Frances and I still loathe it to this day. I used to pretend it was Francesca to make it more 'romantic'.

Ruth is fine if you are 85....really do not like it.

My vote would be for Martha.

GooseyLoosey · 18/02/2008 14:57

Martha. Have never met anyone called Ruth that I liked so am prejudiced.

imaginaryfriend · 18/02/2008 15:50

My name is Ruth and I think on this thread my name's been given just about every reaction going! I don't know whether to laugh or cry ...

Bubbaloo · 18/02/2008 16:01

Me too.

Pinkchampagne · 18/02/2008 16:03

I am quite surprised that so many people say Martha is very popular. I work in a primary school & have never come across a Martha!

Anna8888 · 18/02/2008 16:07

Martha was 87th most popular girls names in England and Wales in 2007.

cushioncover · 18/02/2008 16:07

Thanks everyone.
Anna, you're the first person to express such a strong opinion. I'm shocked that any of them evoke a sense of horror TBH.
Maybe it's more left field than I thought.

I guess I'm looking for a strong, well known but not too popular name. My friend has just called her daughter Margaret and calls her Maggie which I like although I wouldn't use it as it's MIL's name! I quite like Meg for Margaret as well. Though when I mentioned Joscelyn to DH last night he said no other names to be added to the mix. That has grown on me all day though. Hmmmmmmm

FWIW my name is Ruth and I'm a bit ambivalent about it. (didn't like it as a child and prefer Ruthie) I also think it goes best with a long surname.

Frances I like and gave to my DD as her middle name but she does not like it! She would prefer Francesca.

Martha I quite like but it is increasingly popular I think.

Eulalia · 18/02/2008 16:31

Me too imaginary friend. My dh loves my name though.

hecate · 18/02/2008 16:32

I like Ruth and Martha (like Martha more). Not so keen on Francis.

imaginaryfriend · 18/02/2008 16:53

My dp loves my name too, apparently it was always one of his favourite names.

I'm ambivalent about it myself but that's largely because of my Jewish roots and the 'weight' the name carries with it. If I think of it objectively I find it a beautiful name. My dd adores it.

Eulalia · 19/02/2008 22:45

Lovely photo of your dd IF

3andnomore · 20/02/2008 17:08

must admit, personally not keen on any of them, sorry....and well , Martha seems to become a rather common name now... !
Out of the 3 Ruth would be my favourite!

Tinker · 20/02/2008 23:01

Like Frances best. Think Fran is quite a cool name for a woman.

fingerwoman · 20/02/2008 23:11

oh I like all of them, but Frances is my absolute fave. was a strong contender if ds2 had been a girl

Have never liked the names Frances or Ruth, but do like Martha

artichokes · 20/02/2008 23:21

Love Ruth.

TBH not so keen on the other two, not sure why. I have always thought Martha a rather ugly name but I know hundreds disagree.

pointydog · 20/02/2008 23:22

really like Frances and Ruth.

Not so keen on Martha.

Clary · 20/02/2008 23:56

I like Martha very much.

Frances not so keen as is boys' name too (I know it's Francis, but still). My name also a boys' name and it is not good (sorry).

Ruth is the name of my first best friend so I have a strong affection for it. I do know one 3yo Ruth but by and large it's very unusual these days which is refreshing. Also you can't misspell it
Eulalia I remembered it was yr name!

unknownrebelbang · 20/02/2008 23:58

I like Martha best.

purpleduck · 21/02/2008 00:53

Don't really like any, but if a gun were held to my head....

Gawd this is hard

hmm

Martha.

Its a big gun!!!

Candlewax · 21/02/2008 00:55

I remember an absolutely lovely girl in junior school who was called Ruth. So Ruth would have to get my vote.
