I like Ruth best. Martha too cutesy and increasingly common. Frances old fashioned and school ma'am-ish.

hana · 17/02/2008 21:41

you'd ave to be a pretty girl to pull off a name like ruth I think

pootleflump · 17/02/2008 21:41

Don't like Frances, Ruth is ok but not very pretty.

Love Martha.

hana · 17/02/2008 21:42

is martha really as popular as everyone on this thread says?
poor dd when she goes to school

ElvinaFrizzell · 17/02/2008 21:44

I like all three. I know a Martha who has always been known as Marty if you wanted a diminuitive.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 17/02/2008 21:46

Matha is a very nice name - much prefer it to the other 2! And you can use Matty/Mattie as a derivitive.

stepfordwife · 17/02/2008 21:49

martha is a lovely name
not so keen on frances, but do like fran or, even better, frankie
don't like ruth
so you like martha best then?

alfiesbabe · 17/02/2008 21:49

Martha way to popular at the moment. Frances is very pretty. Ruth lovely too. Frances and Ruth are good 'grown up' names too IYSWIM

berolina · 17/02/2008 21:53

I like them all, but not madly.

Quattrocento · 17/02/2008 21:58

Maybe the etymology of the names will help you

Too many Marthas around. Every 2nd baby seems to be Martha at the moment.
Frances and Ruth both nice - I probably prefer Frances because I prefer Franny as a nickname rather than Ruthie which ruins the simplicity of Ruth, IYSWIM

i like martha,
martha my dear

alfiesbabe · 17/02/2008 22:11

Well Ruth has the loveliest meaning of the three

hana · 17/02/2008 22:11

I don't know any Martha's except dd - where are they all?!?!?!!!!

MissyTheFlouncer · 17/02/2008 22:14

frances i like

cushioncover · 17/02/2008 22:29

Yes, I wish the girl on Doctor Who wasn't called Martha as it does seem to have increased it's popularity. I've liked it for a long time although didn't consider it for DD. She was always going to be Lizzie (Elizabeth).

You see, for some strange reason, I keep thinking that Ruth goes better with Elizabeth. Ohhhhhh, I don't know!!!!

Frances
Ruth
Martha

LaDiDaDi · 17/02/2008 22:31

I like Martha but it is popular at the moment.

I really like Ruth.

I'm not sure about Frances.

cushioncover · 17/02/2008 22:34

I knew it had become more popular but I didn't realise it had become popular IYSWIM. (Martha, that is)

Martha is my favourite of the 3 names - I love it & would use it myself!

Anna8888 · 18/02/2008 14:37

Frances is just horrible.

Martha is too popular and reminds me of Martha Stewart...

Ruth is a very pretty name.

Nbg · 18/02/2008 14:38

Martha

Carnival · 18/02/2008 14:47

My mum's name is Martha and she gets called Mattie.

Which is best for you depends on the surname though, I think.

Martha is best, then Ruth. I don't like Frances.
