Honest thoughts. Is it ridiculous? I really like the sound and look of it.

OP posts:

Bluemamma · 24/01/2022 18:54

Ridiculous sorry OP, I looks like aubergine.

dementedma · 24/01/2022 18:57

I wouldn't. Might get away with it if he's going to Eton or Harrow but otherwise....

MissVictoriaPlum · 24/01/2022 19:01

I taught an Oberon not so long ago. He didn't get picked on, kids called him Obie.

theDudesmummy · 24/01/2022 19:03

There would be a big issue for me with Auberon Waugh's politics. But his name is probably not widely known these days so I would say the biggest problem with Auberon now would be that it sounds pompous

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 24/01/2022 19:04

@Caughtavibe

High school will be a brutal experience for him!
It really won’t. Children don’t have prejudices around names in the way that their parents do, and 21st century children are used to a hugely diverse range of names compared to their parents’ 80s and 90s upbringings.

Children take the piss out of each other for a million reasons. I don’t think most MNers realise that names are rarely one of them.

RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 24/01/2022 19:04

@SleepingStandingUp

I like it but I named my kid after one of the angels in Supernatural so lots of people wouldn't trust my choice

@RussiasGreatestLoveMachine I hope it's Tatiana

No, not that off-piste! She’s named after my late DM, so it just happens to be a Shakespearean name.
fillitup · 24/01/2022 19:04

@ZoyaTheDestroyer exactly

ofwarren · 24/01/2022 19:05

I quite like it

ChillysWaterBottle · 24/01/2022 19:06

I love it!

notordinary · 24/01/2022 19:07

Prefer Oberon nn Obi

DillDanding · 24/01/2022 19:11

I love it.

At my sons’ secondary it would not be at all conspicuous. Auberon spelling is better than Oberon.

It will be a cool name is a sea of Jacks/Olivers/Theos and Kits.

KimDeals · 24/01/2022 19:11

What about Aubrey?

Orangesyringe · 24/01/2022 19:16

I love it and much prefer it to the Oberon spelling. I also prefer Auberon to Aubrey as I prefer the oh sound to the or sound.

atowncalledalice · 24/01/2022 19:18

Oh I like it.

garlictwist · 24/01/2022 19:22

@RussiasGreatestLoveMachine

And there’s nothing wrong with Shakespearean names, per se. DD has one - and from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, too…
As long as she isn't called Bottom.
SleepingStandingUp · 24/01/2022 19:30

Oh Russia I'm so sad. I always wanted girl teisn Tatiana and Anastasia

KobaniDaughters · 24/01/2022 19:40

@RussiasGreatestLoveMachine there was me hoping you’d gone for MustardSeed

I love the name Oberon. We gave it to our cat, whose full name is Oberon Kenobi

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 24/01/2022 21:06

The Waugh lads representing on two different threads today.

Tomorrow it'll be Kingsley and Martin.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 24/01/2022 21:07

I prefer Oberon to Auberon.

LondonQueen · 24/01/2022 21:10

What is the obsession with made up names? Poor kid will be counting down the days to 16 when they can change it by deed poll!

mnahmnah · 24/01/2022 21:16

My mum, who is 73, had a great uncle Auberon. Always says how lovely he was. Working class Yorkshireman. I’ve always loved it as a name.

Also, as a teacher of 20 years, I have very rarely heard students making fun of each other’s names. When they know someone with a name, they just take it at face value.

@fillitup there are actually many places in the UK with little diversity. My school is full of Ben/Josh/Emily/Sophie etc. But, on the odd occasion we have had a slightly different name, nobody bats an eyelid.

toastofthetown · 24/01/2022 21:30

Just because you are unfamiliar with a name doesn't mean the OP has made it up...
BungleandGeorge · 24/01/2022 21:41

Err who’s this Tatiana? 😆 hopefully it’s a multiple spellcheck fail?

I’m not sure where all these children are who don’t take the mickey out of names either. I’m not keen but the Oberon spelling is preferable

PossiblyDreaming · 24/01/2022 21:47

@LondonQueen it’s not a made up name Confused. It’s not a particularly common name but it’s not made up.

I think I prefer Oberon and I like the nickname Obi.

PPCD · 24/01/2022 21:50

I like it and I think it's a nicer spelling than Oberon
