Honest thoughts. Is it ridiculous? I really like the sound and look of it.

Really awful. So try hard. Kids will call him obi wan.

GloriousGoosebumps · 25/01/2022 16:02

I'm pleased to hear that today's kids wouldn't torment a child because of their name. Never the less, some names are "weighty" and could only be carried off by a confident and extrovert child If the child is shy and retiring then such a name would be a burden whereas a confident child might revel in an unusual name. I do worry that parents who themselves aren't extroverts so have no reason to assume their child will be extrovert then burden their child with a name they themselves couldn't carry off.
For the record, I prefer Oberon and would assume the parents were actors who lived in Hampstead.

Which given how co Star Wars still is, is likely to be more cool than cringe

Trying to what?

YourVagesty · 25/01/2022 16:10

And if they do, that’d be a nasty clique of people you hang out with.

Not to mention dim and proud of it.

Imissmoominmama · 25/01/2022 16:17

@Kanaloa- yeah, but they think it’s a penis Grin.

What do you imagine Auberon's parents are 'trying hard' to be?
Skeumorph · 25/01/2022 16:41

Take away the posh associations, and it's not actually that nice a sound. Short form - Aub/Obe? Ron?! Sounds too much like aubergine and is faintly depressing even.

PattyPan · 25/01/2022 16:45

@Tullig trying to sound unique, special, possibly cultured.

I have a slightly unusual name although much less unusual than Auberon and grew up hating it and wishing I had a normal name like everyone else. He won’t thank his parents for it.

BiscuitLover3678 · 25/01/2022 16:49

These responses are hilarious!

I’m the opposite. My name was unusual and yes it was different to all the Emilys and Kates but I didn’t really care. As an adult I am so happy it’s different!

Prefer Aubrey

Allsorts1 · 25/01/2022 16:54

I like it! I think Oberon is somehow nicer though. There is a nice dog near us called Oberon and I’ve always thought it was a cool name. Can call him Obe (Oh bee) or Ronnie for short which are both cute!

PattyPan · 25/01/2022 16:54

And what if he’s in my school of thought? At least give him a name where it can have the option to be shortened to something normal.

SeanChailleach · 25/01/2022 16:55

Random observation but Auberon sounds like Aibreán, the 4th month of the year in Irish.

As distinct from what, though -- calling your baby Jack, George or Harry to demonstrate that you don't think you or your child is special, you're just like everyone else with your top ten name? Because of tall poppy syndrome?

I have one of the most used names for my generation from a time with a far smaller pool of names, and given the numbers at school there were always between four and six of us in a class of around 30 all the way through primary and secondary school I might as well have been called Generic Girl Name#20871.

I was always wishing for a name which, if someone called it out, I knew it was likely to be me who was being addressed.

sofakingcool · 25/01/2022 16:56

I like it!

SeanChailleach · 25/01/2022 17:01

Is there something about aubergines that we don't know? I used to know a little Beatrice who introduced herself to everyone as "beetroot" and thought it was hilarious. Goes by "Bid" now she is old.

PattyPan · 25/01/2022 17:03

@tullig to me searching for a unique name says that the parents were worried that their child would be boring and that they care a lot about appearances. I think it’s good to go for a name that could suit anyone and let them develop their own personality. It would be tough for someone who’s shy to have a name like Auberon. There have been plenty of very special people with very common names.

fillitup · 25/01/2022 17:06

Lol I wouldn’t bully an aubergine 🍆, but I’d have a nice giggle with all other mums in creche/playground.

That's so weird, you would actually talk and laugh at a child's name. I don't think I even give a 2nd thought to my dcs classmates names. Why would I?

Snorkmaidenn · 25/01/2022 17:14

Names always get shortened.
He will be called Orb. If you're okay with this, go with it.

Whereas regarding an unusual name as 'try hard' and considering it a bad thing to me suggests the person is insecure and concerned with fitting in above all else.

Genuinely, why wouldn't Auberon 'suit anyone' any more or less than Oliver, George or any of the top ten names?

I’m thinking Bron or Aub (pronounced Ohb)

I’m more concerned about that right wing journalist! Hopefully nobody will know about him though.

OP posts:
PattyPan · 25/01/2022 17:28

@Tullig not everyone wants to stand out. If you’re called Oliver you can choose to stand out or not. It gives you more options. If you’re called Auberon you stand out to some extent automatically. The reason I think try hard names are bad is because they are for the parent and not the child.

@BiscuitLover3678 Bron is a character in GoT as well

fillitup · 25/01/2022 17:36

You don't just stand out for a name though you stand out for all sorts of reasons. Plus we leave in a multicultural diverse country (at least I do) so having a different name is actually not that rare.
