Honest thoughts. Is it ridiculous? I really like the sound and look of it.

The Queen of the Fairies is Titania, for the record. Wink

SeanChailleach · 24/01/2022 22:39

I don't know why but it feels like a stuffy old man name. Obi on the other hand feels like a clever old man name.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/01/2022 23:12

@BungleandGeorge

Err who’s this Tatiana? 😆 hopefully it’s a multiple spellcheck fail?

I’m not sure where all these children are who don’t take the mickey out of names either. I’m not keen but the Oberon spelling is preferable

What?? Have you never seen MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM??
DaisyWaldron · 24/01/2022 23:15

I've never seen a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream with a Tatiana in it.

Ikeameatballs · 24/01/2022 23:16

Not keen, I don’t like the sound of it at all.

Twillow · 24/01/2022 23:20

Nickname Aubergine for sure.

BungleandGeorge · 24/01/2022 23:27

@SleepingStandingUp
yes I’ve read it, seen it at the theatre and watched the film 🤣
Are you thinking of Onegin?

SleepingStandingUp · 24/01/2022 23:28

Yes sorry didn't see my own typo, its been a VERY trying day

Apparently in countries that don’t lend credence to names being a crutch for others to bear.

We’ve got the L’shandas, the Tarquins, the Jaidens, the Hugo’s, the Bartholomews, the Hudsons, the Reilly's, the Daisys, the Olivia’s, the Tadgh’s, the Tabithas, the Oliver’s, and the Dayshawns and I’m yet to meet a single kid that takes the piss out of another kids name.

Of course if you live in an insular world full of George’s and Alice’s you may wonder who this child with the weird name is? I don’t think insular is what you should aspire to…

NorthSouthcatlady · 24/01/2022 23:33

Definitely not made up. But some of the connotations aren’t great

Do you work with children?
Sunbird24 · 24/01/2022 23:40

I was confused by Tatiana as well, she’s definitely not in that play!
I’m on the fence with Auberon/Oberon, not keen on it as a full name but quite like Obi or Ron as a nickname…

No not an insular world, just the real world. Kids don’t take the Mickey because a name is unusual or of a different culture, it’s because it looks and sounds like aubergine and is the name of the king of the fairies in a text that most read in year 7. It’s also a certain type of name, and incredibly uncommon. You don’t know a single kid teased for their name? Perhaps ask the kids..
YourVagesty · 24/01/2022 23:59

I love it OP and it was on my shortlist, but spelled Oberon.

My eldest has covid so I'm home schooling him with toddlers twins who don't nap. Forgive my stupidity
HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 25/01/2022 00:05

Looks like Aubergine

Tullig · 25/01/2022 00:06

@SleepingStandingUp, in those circumstances, I think you could for forgiven for claiming that A Midsummer Night’s Dream featured Tatiana, Lady Macbeth, Jean Brodie, Lady Bracknell and Obi Wan Kenobi. Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 25/01/2022 00:21

Thanks @Tullig! Tonight DH had to take twin 1 for a 9 pm buggy ride to get him to sleep so I could do my uni work!!! Maybe I'll find MSND on the telly somewhere and make them watch it.

Strokethefurrywall · 25/01/2022 00:36

No not an insular world, just the real world. Kids don’t take the Mickey because a name is unusual or of a different culture, it’s because it looks and sounds like aubergine and is the name of the king of the fairies in a text that most read in year 7.

It’s really not the real world though. Auberon is no more worthy of being teased because his name sounds like “aubergine” than because his name is the king of the fairies.

Kids don’t tease other kids for their names because there’s just no value in it (unless you grow up around Georges and Alice’s as I said). Every child’s name is worth of teasing if you really want to find something there, but I’d hazard that kids get teased far quicker depending on the brand of sneakers they wear or the iPhone they have.
Names are passe - my kids have tease worthy names according to Mumsnet but yet they’re never been teased.

My maiden surname was George. I used to have “Georgie Porgie Pudding and Pie” sung to me ALL THE TIME in the 80s. I’m less scarred by that than I was by the teasing I got for my curly hair or the fact that I was skinny.

Kids will tease for anything, names aren’t good fodder these days. Which is a good thing en side it means names are crossing the “class” divide.

Kanaloa · 25/01/2022 01:30

I don’t care for it really. It’s quite a big/fancy name and I prefer plainer names because I’m a pretty plain person. I always think of how I personally would feel with that name/would it suit me. And I wouldn’t really want to be called Auberon and have every initial conversation involve three repetitions of my name plus a spell out.

Snowiscold · 25/01/2022 05:48

it’s because it looks and sounds like aubergine and is the name of the king of the fairies in a text that most read in year 7.

How on earth does it sound like aubergine? In the same way that Courtney sounds like courgette? Ie, it doesn’t. And it is not the name of the king of the fairies and doesn’t even look like it. That is Oberon. Auberon isn’t particularly fancy - it’s one of those tough, gruff Germanic names - something to do with bears. It’s not as fancy as Alexander, and that’s very popular. Go for it, OP.

WhispersOfWickedness · 25/01/2022 06:14

I know one, he's in my DC's school. My DC have never batted an eyelid at his name, he's not been teased for it and this is a very non-diverse area...

chaosrabbitland · 25/01/2022 06:21

@7Worfs

Aubergine

Sunbird24 · 25/01/2022 07:33

@SleepingStandingUp I assumed autocorrect rather than stupidity! Daffodil
