Honest thoughts. Is it ridiculous? I really like the sound and look of it.

It’s great to get the perspective of a real-life playground bully.

Ginandplatonic · 25/01/2022 11:38

Yes you do get the sense from this thread that the issue with unusual names won’t be with other kids at all, it will be with immature, small minded supposed adults.

Goldfishmountainclimber · 25/01/2022 11:38

It might depend on where you live. In central London schools no one would bat an eye at Auberon.

DeoForty · 25/01/2022 11:39

I really love Oberon. But I fear it's a name you can only give in hindsight when he's an artist, an actor or solicitor. Auberon might be more easily shortened. They are strong, elegant names, but not sure if they'd suit a man down the pub.

Foxesinsockses · 25/01/2022 11:40

Auberon is a perfectly normal, not-made-up name at all! OK it's not common but I'm really shocked at the nasty mocking from some of the adults on this thread. I know one, he doesn't get teased at all and as for sounding like Aubergine? well . . . it just doesn't. Also it's not pronounced the same as Oberon.

Not going for a ‘down the pub’ type name so that’s ok. Grin

I love marmite names so actually this is doing the job!

Well OP asked for opinions didn’t she? You can’t ask for opinions if you don’t want to hear honest answers. I agree with all previous PPs that it is a ridiculous name. However OP can decide for herself based on all opinions here - I think that was the point of opening this thread. She may name her baby anything she pleases, the choice is hers. Now with regards to minority here who think Oberon is nice - well if you spell it this way then of course it becomes OK, it doesn’t sound like aubergine anymore. So maybe that’s the way to do it.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/01/2022 12:08

@Bluemamma

Auberon

Only 'all previous PPs' have said nothing of the kind.

I am really, really not offended. Grin I quite like the fact it is so marmite. It’s a very real name.

Thanks everyone. Will be on my list. :)

I'm sure I used to go on holiday to a Welsh village with this name as a kid

Yebbie · 25/01/2022 12:24

Found it, it was Aberaeron Grin

WitchWithoutChips · 25/01/2022 12:30

@Bluemamma

Lol I wouldn’t bully an aubergine 🍆, but I’d have a nice giggle with all other mums in creche/playground. Cucumber is also a nice masculine name, and can be shorten to Cumber, let’s make it a name too :) P.S nothing against aubergines- I love them
Do you understand that in all this talk of bullying you are a bully?
YourVagesty · 25/01/2022 13:21

I cannot believe the bone-headedness of some of the responses on this thread.

It's such a brilliant name and people are entitled to dislike it but to take the piss out of 'Mr Aubergine' or whatever. Bizarre and childish.

For me OP, it would come down to that old adage about not taking criticism from those I wouldn't take advice from.

Kanaloa · 25/01/2022 13:27

But will your child love a ‘marmite name?’ I think that’s what I would consider, choosing a name because you love that it splits opinions is all very well and good when the name is being given to someone else to live with.

McScreamysGhostPants · 25/01/2022 13:39

I absolutely LOVE the name and also really like Oberyn. Obie as a short name and 90% off people would assume Star Wars 🤷🏼‍♀️

Will they like being one of six Olivia or Jack's or being having a name like their grandparents - Elsie, Wallace, Kevin, Sharon. Naming a kid is ways a gamble
Imissmoominmama · 25/01/2022 13:59

Most of the kids I’ve taught wouldn’t know what an aubergine was…

It’s a fine name, and the only ones giggling about it will be small minded parents; kids couldn’t give two hoots.

Kanaloa · 25/01/2022 14:40

There is a place in between being one of five Olivias and choosing a ‘marmite name’ like Auberon. But it’s op’s child and she can name it what she likes, but given she’s asked for opinions she’s got them.

🍆

Most kids will recognise that.

I though that about Obie. My eldest son and half his classmates would love to be called Obie Grin
TabithaTittlemouse · 25/01/2022 14:45

It isn’t something that I would use but I’m not you and I’m sure that you would hate my dc’s names! Grin

It is unusual, it isn’t awful and I’m sure that I would change my mind if I heard it in real life.

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 25/01/2022 14:45

Can see why some kids are such arseholes

So you are a bully, then - and a bully of children. And I suspect the “other mums” would not be having a “nice giggle” with you. And if they do, that’d be a nasty clique of people you hang out with. There is nothing wrong or odd about Auberon. It’s an old name.
