Your Middle Name

Do you have a middle name? What is it? Do you like it?

Is it a typical one of its time?

Mine is Susan, born in the early 70s.
From memory, school friends at the time had Ann (more commonly without the ‘e’), Louise, Jane, Marie, Elizabeth and Claire.
I can’t remember anyone with Grace, May/Mae or Rose, which seems to be very popular at the moment.

Helen, named after my grandmother, but it’s a very common name in my age group

ladygindiva · 19/11/2021 19:50

Mary. I quite like it. My first name is also classic and inoffensive.

Chunkymenrock · 19/11/2021 19:54

Sarah.

ghislaine · 19/11/2021 19:56

Mine’s Sarah too. Fairly common for an early 70s’ girl. My sister’s is Charlotte.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/11/2021 19:57

Mine is Isabel after both my grans. They were both called Isabella but my mum thought that was a bit old fashioned (in 1962) so Isabel it was. I like it.

Justcashnosweets · 19/11/2021 20:03

Anne. With a really common 70s first name. I really dislike it.

MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 19/11/2021 20:04

Mine are: Jamie amanda.
And no, I don't like them.

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/11/2021 20:07

Johanna. It’s a family name. Was nearly Aydel!

BlueFlavour · 19/11/2021 20:12

Mine is Miranda. So is DD’s Smile. It was my mother’s name.

Pallisers · 19/11/2021 20:15

I was given a saints name as middle name after my aunt who was a nun with that name. Except about 10 years later the nuns voted to go back to their actual names instead of the names they took on entering the order. So my middle name is Bernadette after my Aunt Mary. :)

We gave all of ours family names as middle names.

Cotswoldmama · 19/11/2021 20:23

Anneliese pronounced Anna - leeze after my German grandmother I just wish they had gone with the German spelling and pronunciation Annelies pronounced Annaleezah.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/11/2021 20:24

Mine is Michelle. Not a huge fan and very much of its time but it's grown on me over the years. DD's is Rose after my Nan. DH has two middle names.

Derrymum123 · 19/11/2021 20:25

Michelle too. 1960s. I think The Beatles were in the charts at the time. Don't mind it to be honest, but would've preferred Michaela.

dthdx · 19/11/2021 20:26

my middle name is Lyn and it was my grandads name whos unfortunately passed but i absolutely love it

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/11/2021 20:27

Ah my year of birth was 1981 so maybe it's not just 80's like I thought. My mum doesn't have a middle name which is interesting.
teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/11/2021 20:28

@BlueFlavour

Mine is Miranda. So is DD’s Smile. It was my mother’s name.
I like that name
Itsjustrenee · 19/11/2021 20:29

@TurnUpTurnip

Marie and no I don’t like it, would have preferred Maria and use to change it to that when I was a child writing my name
Me too and I hate it. Mind you I don’t like my first name either.
GalaxyPostcard · 19/11/2021 20:31

Morag. I was very premature and my mum named me after the ward sister who was wonderful with her (and me). Smile

Wakeywakeysleepyhead · 19/11/2021 20:32

Laura, my maternal gran.
Love it. She was an amazing lady and I adored her.

sparklecrazy · 19/11/2021 20:37

Adelle. Born in '81 and I've always loved it and still do. Its also just a name that my parents both liked and not specifically named after anyone.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 19/11/2021 20:44

Mine's Rosemary, I hated it as a child but quite fond of it now in my old age.

Vicliz24 · 19/11/2021 20:45

Anastasia is mine . Hated it as a child love it now . Both my Boys have family middle names two each

StickyStickyStickStickSong · 19/11/2021 20:53

Mine is Nicola, not named after anyone, mom just liked it and it just had a nice ring to it after my first name being 1 syllable...and I've not met another person with Nicola as a middle name so I quite like it Smile

My DS has 2 as I chose Anthony after my DU who passed a a few years ago who I adored like a father! And my DH chose David which is the middle name of his DF, his first name is 1 syllable so it has quite a nice ring to it too

Throughabushbackwards · 19/11/2021 21:03

We all have family names as our middle names. My sons have DH's Grandfather's name and my brother's name as their respective middle names, I have my Mum's name, she had her Gramdma's, etc.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/11/2021 21:05

I have two middle names - the names of my Grandmothers (on each side of my family). In my family middle names are nearly always the name(s) of family members or very close friends (almost family) you want to honour. I don't personally really see the point of random middle name(s) picked simply because the parents like them/to identify the child as an individual, as surely that's what the first name is for?

I'm planning to to continue the tradition with my DS when he arrives, as imo liking the actual name doesn't matter as much (my own middle names are quite dated), it's the link to heritage that is important for me.
