Your Middle Name

Do you have a middle name? What is it? Do you like it?

Is it a typical one of its time?

Mine is Susan, born in the early 70s.
From memory, school friends at the time had Ann (more commonly without the ‘e’), Louise, Jane, Marie, Elizabeth and Claire.
I can’t remember anyone with Grace, May/Mae or Rose, which seems to be very popular at the moment.

Stephanie, early 80s, no emotional connection. Really never liked it.

Mine is Lorraine… mid 1950’s.

I like it as my surname is French and the two go together well.

@NowNumber5

Did your own middle name influence your choices for your child/ren?
For example, if you had a 'boring' middle name, did you give more thought into choosing something less run of the mill?
And vice versa, did having a flamboyant one have an influence on you choosing a more 'normal' one for your child?

What about those of you who wasn't given one?
Did that fact make you feel more inclined to give your child one?

I find names fascinating!

My middle name is Louise, typical for being born in the 80s. My first name is unusual, I've only ever met one other person with my name. My own children did not get unusual names that people can't pronounce, and their middle names are honouring family members

Mine is Ilse after my grandmother and I passed it on to my daughter. We both have Northern European first names so it works well.
I was born in the mid 70s and so many friends had Louise as a middle name.

Mine is Elizabeth. I quite like it. It was quite typical for when I was born in the mid 70s but I think it goes well with my first name which is a classic name and still used but generally well thought of.
My kids don't have middle names as we live in Spain and they don't do that here, if you have 2 then you use them (Juan Carlos or Ana Mari for instance) as opposed to in the UK where nobody knows your middle name unless you tell them.

May. I was born 1960. It was my Mum's middle name, but it's the name she was known by.

Jane just like most people born in the 80s. I don't like it at all, I would have liked something more interesting

Mine is Rose after my great grandmother. It's my daughter's middle name too.

Jean. After my mum although her name is Jeanie and she gets annoyed at being called jean 🤷🏻‍♀️

Child of the 70s too, and my first name ends in an a so if I use the two together it sound very American trailer park (think Norma Jean but it’s not that it’s more unusual)

My middle name is Louise (late 90s)
It’s so common but I like it because my mum, sister and cousin also all have Louise as their middle name. I feel like I should carry on this tradition haha

I'm not telling because I'm known by my middle name. I love it, it was my grandmother's middle name too and I love that connection to her. It's also much nicer than my first name.

Emilia. After a book my mom loved growing up. And how popular it is nowadays! I love it and my husband sometimes calls me Emilio Estevez as a joke Grin

I never had a middle name and am sure this is why my son has two!

Mine is a very unusual spelling of a relatively known name. People never get what it is from the spelling. My husband's middle name is an animal 🤣 So we've naturally given our children quite quirky middle names, can't say it's ever bothered me or DH.

My middle name is meaningful to my Mum; my DDs middle names are also meaningful.
None are 'of the time', but 'of the family'

Rose. One of the most basic middle names ever but I like it

Don’t have one. My dad doesn’t either and my mum hates hers so they just never saw the need to give their kids one.

Mine is typical of the era. I really like it. I had an unusual, though not made up, first name. I've never had to go by first name plus surname ever so the combination really works and they flow well together. My dd has the same middle name as me. Ds has his dad's first name as his middle name which is a name we both liked. I wouldn't use a middle name if it didn't flow well with the first name and surname. I Would also avoid any middle name which meant initials spelt out something rude.

I have 2 middle names, named after family members, it's a total pain for form filling.

My DC only have one middle name as a result, but still named after family members.

I don't have one, neither does DH so we wanted our DDs to have them (FOMO?). They both have meaningless, boring middles names as per MN, one is mentioned in your OP although said child is almost 15. They like having them, one child is regularly called by her middle name as a NN although she is only known by her first name outside the household.
